The story and characters were unusually by the numbers even for a shounen. I would love to see this world and magic system interpreted by a more ambitious writer!

But it won't be until season 3 that we will get his backstory, which is what you are referring to in regards to him being the fan favorite antagonist. Which sadly probably won't get animated until 2024 or 2025 at the soonest :(
