I personally like the sequel but it works mostly as its own thing in which it tried to do. Still, it's probably a lot more confusing than the first. Especially at a... certain scene near the end.

What I like about the series is that you get a lot more time to learn about the characters and see them develop. Plus the Tachikomas are great.

I highly recommend checking out the sequel Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. It's a very different film, but it does serve as a continuation of this particular continuity.

There are a bunch of different continuities for Ghost in the Shell: the movies, the original manga, Stand Alone Complex, Arise, and if I'm not mistaken the new CG series. They share the same characters, just not the same events.
