Bolin being a lava bender made sense to me, he can’t bend metal, his mom was fire nation, it was a bending we’d been seeing more throughout the season, but ya it was a lil ex machina

I've already left the link previously but there's this great analysis about why Bolin can lava bend but not metal bend that has to do with how he learned EARTHbending to begin with. Learning metal bending comes from knowing more traditional earthbending as taught by Toph and the badgermoles. Because of the traditional style you can "sense" the earth within the metal and bend it. Korra learned from the best traditional styles growing up, so she picks it up quickly. Bolin, on the other hand, basically had to teach himself how to earth bend growing up on the streets. So he does not know how to sense earth within the metal. But lavabending is much more fluid and intense and fits with his style. I remember watching this and was caught off guard by Zaheer flying but realized Air bison have been doing it forever. Same technique. However I did see Bolin becoming a lava bender coming.

Fun Fact! Kuvira has been a background character you actually see a lot in Zaofu. She is one of the dancers you see dancing with Suyin in the first Zaofu episode. She is the guard who hears the explosion from Aiwei escaping after being found out, the one who comes to check on team Korra at Aiwei's home, and the guard who gives the update on the search for Aiwei to Sit in and the gang. If I am not mistaken, I believe she is also one of the guards who comes out and fights Zaheer and the others when they tried to kidnap a Korra. I believe she was the one who pulled Zaheer into a 1v1(or 1v2 I forget exactly) fight with her(or her and another guard).

Kuvira is one of the folks that's been in the background a lot but just got named. She's also voiced by Zelda Williams, Robin Williams' daughter!

I just rewatched the B3 finale and most of B4, and actually teared up at multiple parts. The crew has no idea the greatness they are in for in Book 4 :)

Kuvira can be seen in many Zaofu scenes, firstly she was one of the "dancers" seen when Korra first meets Suyin. Often seen wearing a helmet but the mole is visible.

Yes she was also in Lin's dance troupe on the first day they arrived in Zaofu. She's been around in the background from the very beginning. Fun fact: she's voiced by Zelda Williams, daughter of Robin Williams. And yes, Robin Williams admitted that he named his daughter after a video game princess.

Kuvira appeared several times throughout season 3. She was the metalbender who pulled Zaheer off of the lava island when the Red Lotus first tried to kidnap Korra in Zafou. She was also the guard who was walking super slow up the stairs after Aiwei escaped.
