Actually it acted more like an epipen. It would turn purple when the gas was near and then the Doctor would eat the celery to protect himself from it. Fun Fact: Peter Davison despises celery and hated the scenes he was forced to eat it

Is this Classic Who episode instead of the Modern Who episode or will 3x01 be released too? If not, I'm a bit disappointed. It's only one episode per week and we're basically groaning for more. Don't get me wrong, I love that you're doing Classic Who as well - if it's not interfering with the usual schedule. Your reaction was great as usual though.

The celery is used by the Doctor as a way to detect a poisonous gas to his species. If memory serves, I believe that the celery would turn purple due to this gas, and would allow the Doctor a chance to get away before he died from the gas..... and it could be used as a snack if needed.

Aw, this was a lot of fun. :D Even if of course, there would have been a different reaction had you guys watched more Classic Who (and I did feel sorry for Calvin since there was no Tom Baker), this was still a lot of fun - especially the robot reaction. And their reaction to the Master (and I love that outfit!), Time Lords and the different Doctors. (And Turlough! Eric's comment when Five and Turlough was looking at the painting in the FL made me crack up.) So while it might not have been the best episode you've watched, I think it'll serve you well in the future, and even if not, it was a ton of fun to watch. :D

Great reaction, this was the first DVD I picked up, used to watch Doctor Who in the 80's on PBS so I love this story because it's like a reunion with all the old companions and Doctors

I have to agree with Dale Denton, start from the "beginning" which by the way is the name for the DVD, I have which includes "an unearthly child", "The Daleks" & ends with "The edge of destruction " with William Hartnell. I would skip "Marco Polo" which I have in audio book form, (they took the original sound track & added an actors voice describing what was going on, on screen. I would then go on to power of the daleks, & the three doctors, maybe robot a tom baker first episode. Will, you get the idea, but to on of the new Doctor Who episodes which is like the five Doctors, how about the day of the doctor even though they're not there yet, it was in my view a good one. Great reaction I loved it.

Love that you guys did this, I genuinely hope to see you guys react to more Classic Who :) This was an anniversary special, so it does rely heavily on a certain foreknowledge of the characters, eras and lore. I honestly think if you started with something like 'Spearhead from Space' you'd be able to get much more into it from the ground up.

Nice that they get to watch some classic Who (I started watching Doctor Who during Tom Bakers run) but the faster they get through the 3rd series of new Who the faster they get through the worst companion in the new Who series. Martha is just slightly below Rose as worst companion in new Who imo.

Fun Fact : the reason the 3rd doctor drives a car is because during his series the Time Lords locked him out of the Tardis as punishment and trapped him on earth. Side fact: the actor who plays Alfred in Gotham is the son of the 3rd doctor

Tbh the five doctors as a story leans heavily on nostalgic value for the older doctors and other things and is literally a celebration of all that, it's not the one I would choose to introduce someone who's new to old who for that reason it's one to build up to. However I did enjoy seeing a reaction to classic who , something that is missing in the geek reaction circles in my opinion so this is apreaicted 🙂

Context for a few things picked up on for no one in particular. Baker chose not to participate, necessitating re-using some previously shot footage from Shada, an incomplete serial that went unfinished because of a UK strike. Several attempts have been made to finish it over the years, with the latest hitting in a few weeks with an official animated reconstruction of the missing scenes. The First, Second and Third Doctors did meet previous to this, in the 10th anniversary special, The Three Doctors. That one did feature the original First Doctor William Hartnell, but his presence was greatly limited due to his health.

I can't decide if I'm disappointed in the wait for Smith & Jones or ecstatic that they get to see Classic Who! I'm going to go with both. Both is good. Honestly, I'm so relieved they're watching some Classic Who. As the modern series goes on, it's so much better if you have a frame of reference to some classic stuff.

Last weeks reaction said "Classic Who next week". That's because it was either this or a break. If we didn't have this, there wouldn't be any DW at all this week. This is because they're also watching Torchwood, and the shows need to line up. This isn't replacing DW as much as it's filling a spot that would otherwise have been empty.
