I would like to add that it was probably after Mustang learned the Flame Alchemy that he was State Certified.

State Alchemist are a part of the Military. Ed is a Major and he could wear the military blues if he wanted too, I just don't think that Ed wants to be associated with the military anymore than he is. He perfers what he wears and I believe since he didn't go to the academy and due to his age he has more lenancy in what he wears (he does have the watch to show his affiliation though). He became a State Alchemist to gain access to research material to find a way to get Al's body back. Ed does not like the military - it is why he was ready to hand in his watch to Bradley in ep 29. He stays in the military because it offers him both money and materials he wouldn't have otherwise. Ed's main priority is Al and taking care of themselves. Ed has some basic military training (that is not really alluded to in the anime - but all of Ed and Al's training with Izumi probably fast tracked the process) but he didn't spend time at an academy like Mustang did for a few years (before becoming a State Alchemist which boosted him to the rank of Major). Becoming a State Alchemist involves rigorous tests and evaluations, and Ed was able to do everything when he was 12 (basically unheard of)- becoming the youngest State Alchemist in history. Mustang became a State Alchemist at 20 (which is still very young), which happened after B. Hawkeyes death, when Mustang finished learning flame alchemy. Ishval War Order 3066 happened 3 years later and all combat-oriented State Alchemists were sent to the front line (Flame, Crimson, Iron Blood, Strong Arm, etc.)

You are good. They did OVA 4 first because it's about Mustang and Hughes and the Ishvalan War, which was the main topic of last week's episode. :D

I think Ed mentioned State Alchemists having to get firearms training back in ep. 24 when Hawkeye asked him if he knew how to use a gun. So he's had *some* soldier training, but it's probably like basic training vs. Mustang going to the Amestrian equivalent of West Point. I think the timeline goes Mustang learns basic alchemy from Master Hawkeye (who is working on inventing Flame Alchemy) -> Mustang goes to military training -> Mustang visits Master Hawkeye at his deathbed -> Mustang learns Flame Alchemy from the tattoos on Riza's back -> Mustang fights in Ishvalan War.

I think putting the OVA here makes a lot of sense. Saving it to the end works too, but it doesn't give the same emotional impact as watching it straight after the Ishval episodes.

It's a really good OVA. Gives us a lot of backstory for Mustang that helps you understand his motivations better.

There's no need for an ova. I felt like that was a waste of a week. Still a big fan but was bummed to see it was a ova.
