Monster Ep 59

Well damn... this has got to be the best episode so far.
When I say "best", I am really referring to the anime's ability to convey an immensely sad story.
God damn, ... Eva is just pulling at my heartstrings now. It's interesting to think about how easy it was to critique her character earlier in the series, but now everything is so tragic. Martin as well... holy shit the last scene and the "young punk". I can't get over how much pain he was able to throw at Martin and just laugh away. Wild wild wild.

I will also mention that I have a lot in common with some of Martin's key tragedies which is why I remember very vividly hating Eva like she was a real person lol. But that said Eva's story and growth has always been a beautifully tragic but poignant story about identity. When I first watched Eva's anger and downfall she really did fill me with like a gut reaction of disgust. She was bratty and a bitch and even if I understood she was lashing out in grief, it was just an ugly face she kept putting on. But as we went through the episodes and Eva just started pulling back the little layers and you really saw her pain and loss, she really does illicit genuine heartbreak. She's hit a rock bottom so hard she fell through it and become embroiled in something really just beyond herself before having time to grieve. She barely had the time to recover from the loss of her dad, the death of her lifestyle, the death of her engagement. Just death in general. She burned so wildly out of control and now shes sitting at what she believes to be the end of her life and only barely has a sense of self left. A sense of self thats not even genuine or hers but sort of the scraps of herself that shes just been holding on to. She wants to go out on her own terms, proud of something but she has no identity, a very key theme that drives the entire narrative, and shes running out of time to even find it.

I think these episodes really show how great (and unique) of a writer Urasawa is. You said the last episode felt like a filler (which is true) but then it turns into this, and will likely develop more in the next ep. Urasawa really just needs time to develop his ideas. Like the main plot of Monster probably could’ve been told in half as many episodes, but it wouldn’t be so special. Just wish Monster had Pluto’s 1 hour long episodes, don’t think 24 min work as well with this kind of writing.
