The reason it was important to get Ushio's original body was so Shadow Ushio could copy it to repair/heal itself from damage sustained as you suspected, such as any damage taken during the school fight last ep (her shorter hair can be seen as a representation of that damage). She also doesn't repair herself automatically each loop, which could become a real problem if Shin's "save point" jumps forward to a spot where they can no longer retrieve Ushio's body. I was a bit confused when Shadow Ushio offered to loop as soon as they discovered her body was gone from the clinic, but that was probably the scenario they wanted to avoid in the future. But Shin chose to push forward with this current loop for as long as he could, what a guy!
