For quick and dirty yen to dollar amounts just move the decimal over 2 spaces to the right, so 100 yen=$1, so in this case 40,000 yen=$400 for a night at a hotel, now that may or may not include dinner and breakfast, but still, that's super expensive. In Japan they don't have the dollar/cent distinguish like we do, so 1 yen is basically $0.01/1 cent. To put the cost of the ryokan(traditional Japanese inn) in the mountains in perspective, Nagoya or Hokkaido would probably be the best allegory here and they are typically between $58(budget)-$230(upscale), with most mid-range options being about$100-$200.
