But I also remember once I got into anime (around 13) that I was seeking a lot of anime out and finding it on weird things. Comcast had various weird channels, and some on demand anime service too. G4TV had some anime block I believe cause I remember thats where I watched GetBackers. I'm blanking on some of the other weird off networks or channels. But there was a friend in high school that got a lot of bootleg anime that was badly subbed Chinese knock offs too. Other than that yeah it was random tapes at like Blockbuster (I grabbed a lot of DBZ movies this way and saw Berserk (1997) this way as well) and stuff too. I was scrounging my little ass off trying to watch anime.
