ReZero Ep 13

He went from Chad to... Tom... back to well maybe Chad.. but with limitations
LOL that wooden sword fight was rough

ReZero Ep 13

Comments

this episode was just that wake-up call for viewers that the shows main character wasn't actually super likeable. he's selfish and has glaring flaws. the episode was pretty divisive for the fanbase because most people hate seeing their protagonist dig themselves deeper and deeper into a hole as a consequence of their flimsy sense of pride.

S3 or Arc 5 is probably my favorite out of all the 8 Arcs I have read so far. I need to reed arc 9.

@tony, this episode got alot of shit in the general anime community, not because it was bad or anything, it was mostly because some people could not handle the second hand embarrassment from Subaru white knighting in front of literal 100's of knights. whenever rezero gets a post on /r/Anime on reddit, there is always someone chiming in that they quit re zero because of this episode.

Haiiro

No, I watched S1 and S2 a while ago. I don't quite remember everything in detail, I'm watchinf these reactions to refresh my memory before going into S3.

Lixien

True this is probably my least favorite episode and if newcomers can get past this they can usually are it through the series and have a good time. Not all but most.

Rem is best waifu

Oh you are a first time watcher? Hope you enjoy

Rem is best waifu

I mean it is anime, nothing has to make sense. That is why I like JoJo

Rem is best waifu

Nah man, you did great. It’s just one of those "yikes" episodes

Vlad Limanets

Did this episode get a lot of shit or something?? There were so many people writing huge comments justifying a character and their actions. I didn't say anything about him. Is this something where the hardcore fans have to air something out that's obligated to being in the fandom??

DrumRollTony

Tbf None of this is realistic

Its been an unbalanced relationship for a long time now. Subaru holds onto the memories of all the loops. Emilia was his first savior and first person who accepted him and treated him with kindness since he entered this world as a lost boy with nothing going for him... which he latched onto very quickly. As such, she has been his guiding light all throughout the series so far. He's only been able to hang on mentally through everything because of Emilia. His trauma from all the death and suffering manifests in many unhealthy ways. He clings to Emilia as the only person who was unconditionally kind and emotionally supportive to him in every loop, as a person who makes all the suffering worth it, and as someone he wants to protect cos it gives him a sense of purpose and belonging in this cruel unforgiving world of Re:Zero. If he didn't have Emilia, what would he have going for him? He'd be still that lost kid on the streets with no sense of purpose. And considering how brutal the world of Re:Zero is, it wouldn't be easy to live. So its all pretty damn selfish. But not vindictive in any way, he genuinely thinks he's right and the good guy in this muddied situation. Pure stubborn ignorance and teen insecurities. Its all just a very unhealthy dependance. What else could we have expected from a shut-in NEET with awkward social skills and no self awareness. Re:Zero shows the true reality of what would happen. Many isekai have the main character (socially awkward loser) suddenly become a chad with strength and charisma with the ladies. Naah that's unrealistic... Subaru can put on the act of a confident guy but his actions and insecurities paint a less glorified portrait.

"did we not hear an opening this episode?" Re:Zero is famous for being loose with openings and endings. In season 2 there's basically no openings and endings because they wanted to maximize time for the story. Season 3 just started and had an episode with both OP and ED and people were losing their minds because the last time it happened in this show was here in season 1

FullHeart

I know it's not on the same level as Stein's;Gate but there are definitely little 1 second moments every now and then that I suddenly find a lot more significance in after knowing season 2

Nick K

The character growth in this series is actually crazy. It hurts to watch this bit where you see Subaru at his absolute lowest. Genuinely horrible to watch, but not in like a "this is badly written way" because it all pays off later and his actions really click into place

FullHeart

yeah, yeah, not trying to argue who had it worse here. Just talking about being able to ''talk about it'' to someone which Subaru wasn't (at least at this point, I'm not aware of future events)

Lixien

So in her speech Emilia proposed what is basically communism and the purple haired girl is basically a cute anime girl version of Trump lol

kinetic98

Get used to not hearing the opening song for this series majority of the time. They will take away both the OP and ED just to tell more of the story 🗿

Lichrin69

True but I also want people who are a fan of Steinsgate to play the Visual Novel. The Shizune route Okube has probably lived the same day thousands of times. I doubt Subaru could come close to the loops and years put in as Houhin Kouma

Rem is best waifu

Okarin from Steins;Gate could at least talk to Kurisu about the problems he was facing with the time travel stuff. Subaru can't, that has to be mentally taxing on top of what he's experiencing already.

Lixien

the others have explained it well in their comments, and this is definitely the end of the low point of Re:Zero (although it had to be done from the context of the story)

SKAOG

Wow he just kinda sucks. They’re gonna have to do a lot to redeem him for that last scene for me

SimplySora

Is Subaru one of the hardest characters to watch the first half of their anime, YES. However he reacts very real and has tremendous growth throughout the Light Novel and anime. Most 16 y/o kids would have had a psychological breakdown after being killed that many times and everyone forget most the time spent together.

Rem is best waifu

Oh, that was a tough episode, but things are gonna get way cooler from here on About the light novel, we got a bit of a compressed recap and a reshuffled order of events. In the web novel, though, each candidate for the throne had quite detailed speeches, explaining their motivations and adding depth to the lore of this world. IMO, Crusch (the girl with dark green hair) had the most constructive political stance (she’s a reformist and a liberal) IMPORTANT: The web novel dropped a hint that Felt is actually of royal blood and the legit heir to the throne Let me clear up the Subaru vs Emilia argument a bit Subaru’s side: He was running on the fumes of selfish love, and his male pride wouldn’t let him back down. Add to that a dose of toxic behavior Emilia’s side: She’s a total slowpoke (no offense). First off, she doesn’t realize Subaru is in love with her, so she interprets all his special treatment as pity or something similar, since literally everyone else in this world only treats her with negativity. Secondly, she has an obsessive attitude towards promises, which stems from her role as a spirit user. A flashback in season 2 explains why she’s so hung up on it

Vlad Limanets

Re zero is quite special when it comes to their OP and ED use cases. The studio White fox quite often just skips the OP/ED just so they can have more actual time for content, by cutting those they get 1:30min per OP/ED which adds up quite quickly. in Season 2 they played the first opening maybe like 3 times total, and barely even featured the ending at all. White Fox in season 2 with some of the episodes were chad's enough to buy out advertising time slots to cram in more content to get closer to the 30min mark.

Haiiro

One of the most misunderstood episodes of the series. It's cringe in the moment, but as the series progresses, everything from these early stages means so much more once it's all given perspective. Never could have guessed when I first watched that this creature of a main character would become my favorite across any fiction. A heads up that you're entering a part of the series that will set up the broader plot so if there's anything in the following episodes that stumps as per usual just ask. (re:zero sets up a lot of mystery on a consistent basis so if it's something you don't feel like you ever knew the answer to you probably didn't)

Danyul

And there it is, IMO the low point of the series. But at the same time it's so necessary. Subaru's toxic behavior has been building since the beginning and he finally gets beat down both physically and emotionally for it. It's interesting to me how I experience the cringe in this episode as opposed to, for example, Zenitsu. Zenitsu's behavior is just so ridiculous and ungrounded that I don't even perceive him as an actual character, just an unfunny part of the background. That makes it easy for me to tune out. Subaru's much more difficult for me to watch because he has coherent motives behind his actions, even if they're bad ones.

Anorus

Gotta love Subaru White Knighting and adamantly trying to defend his precious Emilia in front of....*checks notes* ACTUAL KNIGHTS?? Of course when he says knight, he means it colloquially as in just her protector, but since they have that as their official title, I can understand taking offense to it. If some random citizen proclaimed they were a CIA member or some shit in front of the actual people, I can imagine them not taking it too well. I'm completely fine with him wanting to make her ruler, but the cringe level definitely goes up when you start shit talking these guys who've obviously put some blood, sweat, and tears into their training. He says they were only born into the lineage which while true, is only to an extent cause they worked to get into the actual ranks. It gets worse when you think he really is only doing that much because he hates Julius for kissing Emilia's hand, which while a perfectly polite greeting at the time period, since Subaru's from modern day I don't think any guy would want that happening either. On another note, while Emilia is pissed about what Subaru was doing in the court, good ol' Papa Dio seemed to smile right before Subaru started going off. Just noticing that on this watchthrough, I think he wanted all of this chaos and commotion in court to happen.
