The last few moments of this episode certainly felt like a fever dream, or a bong rip as you put it. I think in the source material what happens at the end is supposed to be super brief, but I think the animators wanted to flex a little bit. They made the images we saw feel like a movie. Now compare this alien interaction to what we got in episode of Dan Da Dan and we got a polar opposite vibe.
