Vinland Saga S2 Ep 23

Woah! Not the move I expected from him 👀

Vinland Saga S2 Ep 23

Comments

@Walt D I don't really feel the need to push anything, at least not in the sense you might mean. I can give a reminder that certain shows exist and offer insight on what could be a good fit. Monster makes the most sense as a follow-up for Vinland. But Castlevania would be among the better options for a replacement as well. Black Lagoon could work too. They are all suited for a mature audience, just in different ways. The anime journey is a long haul. If a series doesn't happen today, it will have showcase opportunities in the future. There is much value to find in many stories and many stories that offer value. I would be more inclined to push against certain replacement options. If someone said, "Hey, now that you have watched Vinland, go watch Seven Deadly Sins because it's also awesome" I might say, "Cool that you like it, but probably not a good follow-up for Vinland." If you get me 😅 In the end, Tony knows Tony best and can make the call.

Jet Man

Are you going to push Castlevania Jet?

Walt D

yes for someone who has no ability to think it can be difficult to appreciate it

hunter x hunter is a 7 at best

lasher840

I think Hunter x Hunter is a 7/10 at best. Thats not to knock anyone else's opinion or say I'm right, its just that I dont understand the love it gets. The soundtrack is a solid 8/10. Animation a 5/10. Every arc has a slow burn of like 10-11 episodes to get it going and "justify" a stellar 3-4 episodes. There is "cheese" galore and character designs that some would consider absurd even by anime standards (Zazan etc). But hey if you like it all power to you man! Just playing devils advocate and saying there's people out there that dont think its an OMG 10/10.

Most of what your typing is definitely understandable some parts of it are a bit hard to determine what you are trying to say. Either way from what I could fully or mostly understand I think your right and making some great points there. That aside even with some of it being hard to understand your English ability for uncommon subjects like what your talking about is impressive. Keep up the good work, going from Japanese to English and the other way around is really hard and you're in my opinion doing great to be able to get most of your thoughts across this well. 英語の練習頑張ってください。

SPEAK YOUR FACTS! Repeat this in the last episode again, as he has stated that he wants suggestions in the last episode. I've also been pushing for HxH for the same reasons in various other posts and comments. It's a shounen that doesn't feel like a shounen for reasons, but elaborating more would be into spoiler territory.

SKAOG

@TheGoblerTrainsMovinIn random internet posts that often turn into essays and attempting to study while I'm awake enough to retain anything are what happens when I'm on a 12 hour all night shift with way too much down time.

First sorry for yet another essay, I suck at being concise and expect most will understandably scroll past and might even find this much text annoying which is understandable but this episode really does a lot for showing and proving alternatives to what most would consider the only options at the time. Granted historical circumstances and exact methods were quite different than this but the end result with Canute's reduction of military with the intent to foster peace with England are real and that's part of why this show isn't just saying these alternatives might be possible but were possible. Of course don't look any further ahead history wise or risk spoilers in some capacity. This is probably the most impactful and my favorite episode of the season and show as a whole. Leaving real history aside I think why it resonated so much with Canute was two fold. One being that Canute really has been trying to build a paradise this whole time even if his methods have been extremely harsh in many circumstances and I think he got a good glimpse of how much he's actually "lost the plot" through Thorfinn's words and actions, Canute's end goal is and always was a better world and while he saw scheming and conflict at all turns seeing that someone else truly honestly wants what he wants even if its by completely removed means in a way brought Canute back from that headspace of questioning everyone's intentions and being alone on this mission as shown with his short exchange with Wulf. Second is that I think because Canute always faced resistance or the potential for it due to his military conquest Thorfinn also showed him a flaw in his methods, in that the people could just leave (or be all killed as shown by the bodies effectively the same result for Canute's intent), similar to what Canute's vision of his father was saying one sheep could lead the herd astray just with totally different context. We saw throughout this season that Canute was increasing military size and expenses because he saw it as the necessary way to bring more places into his plan and reduce threats of it being opposed but that grew costs which required more taxes and acquisitions, that's even Canute's whole reason for setting up Ketil. Well in the case of if everyone left like Thorfinn would then all you'd have is more farmland and no farmers yet it would cost resources to keep the land claimed making it an endless and in this case with the people just leaving (or dead) pointless endeavor because he needs them for what they do to supply his army and mission. In realizing that direct military force isn't required or even a sure way to have people contribute to building his paradise he seemingly in that moment sort of realized at some point it just wouldn't work anymore. Plus just like Thorfinn and Canute said continuing like this just makes more work for Thorfinn and now that Canute sees him as an honest yet separate ally in this mission it's counterproductive to his cause to do that. The thing is by removing forces and becoming a cooperator instead of a conqueror the people just like we saw all the way back in early season 1 with the mother and daughter that helped Thorfinn who were talking about the previous king being good because he made peace where Canute's father and other kings just started more conflict and divided what could be two or more cooperative groups causing war over resources and rulership when clearly what that does is piss off the people on each side because they likely lose people to the "other" during the conflict breeding further conflict in the future making it likely generational. Mobilizing offensive forces also took away from defense in non-essential areas which made it all the easier for opportunists like Askeladd's crew to do what they did for a living which was briefly touched on in season one mentioning that the constant conflict created more opportunities for vikings to raid making the victim populace/military effectively face two fronts and it was even brought up that with the conflict slowing down where Askeladd's crew were in range of made it more difficult for his group to operate as well as most of the limited and worth targeting vulnerable villages had already being pillaged during the conflict. It's also unnecessary because those common people didn't need their current king to conquer more for them to be okay and productive and did fine under a previous king who didn't start these conflicts like this (we see a similar scenario on a smaller scale with Arnheid's story of how the conflict left the opening for the village to be pillaged), those kind of people as in the largest populace generally just want to live and not have conflict like we see with Einar's village at the beginning of season 2 with his mom really poignantly saying while looking at the village "does this look like we lost?". So with the removal of forces from those territories and overall reducing the size and cost of his military operation Canute effectively showed them in the most honest way possible he doesn't want conflict and with potential instigators already taken care of possibly even years ago it became clear to the populace that this was genuinely a potential end to warring parties at least for the foreseeable future so it's not surprising even with the fresh scars of that conflict that they would at least accept an end to the military invasion and truthfully claim loyalty to him because he is doing what every farmer and common-man wants which is not ruling heavy handedly to further more conquest via extensive taxes and requisitioning their resources, which he can now afford to not do to them because of the drastic drop in military upkeep since he isn't warring anymore leaving only defense as a necessary branch as well as trusting that the people want what he is doing which because having the able bodied men home instead of enlisted meaning full families for work and being less vulnerable with the military focused on peace keeping instead of largely being off fighting a war is exactly what drastically reduces the threat of uprisings taking place which is exactly what he feared and a major reason he kept a large military to prevent. In a sense both Canute and Thorfinn found their own first method even if each of theirs is drastically different. End of the almost embarrassingly long essay.

Once again Im doing my propaganda for Hunter x Hunter to replace Vinland Saga. VInland Saga is a masterpiece probably in my top 2-4 but Hunter x Hunter is the only one thats clearly above all the rest. Even though 148 ep may seem a lot it's actually a decent length and I can assure you won't regret it. It's also more in line with the codes of shonen (while also breaking them but I wont tell more about this) so it's completely different from anything you've experienced so far. Also you already had a glimpse of it but the music in HxH is S tier so I sincerely hope you'll watch that after Vinland.

Jhon 1479

you mention the bob ross reruns - not sure if you know, but there's a bob ross twitch channel that basically runs episodes 24/7, and leaves vods up for when it's not live! I used to use it to wind down before bed

in a word. “we japanese's thoughts are really easy to missunderstood perfectly, with easy prejudice, like they are coward(!?)“ acturelly there is very “opposite side including at least past aging. u may think jpn are coward and run away to fight, but acturelly the real thoughts of past-aging were not shallow, no one should be hurt by the current easy flow. I realize that it is easy to be exploited, but it dosen't mean taklng problems lightly, and at least half of them have not abandoned other last resorts...in real(though we need change over 2/3). well.,stop now, but for ex rights such as polygamy and inter-family marriage are irrational and limitless, and cannot be adopted institutionally, but this does not mean that other cultures are rejected, that naturally doesn't suit us for over 2,600 years history culture, I think. so I am glad to know others accepting with non-dogmatic and logically flexible concept. ↑ my eng is confusing... I know by re-translation. but there are true philosophycal natural thoughts are refrected, I think.

Try not to let vinland saga get you kicked out of any bars at twitchcon

TheGoblerTrainsMovinIn

Yea I can do that. I'll post something on youtube community page and patreon soon. Good idea!

DrumRollTony

Loved watching your reactions and hearing your thoughts for this season, thanks Tony! It got me excited for the series again and I started reading the manga from this point in the show. See you next time

D

Have any plans for a possible meet up in San Diego while you’re down here for Twitch con? Wouldn’t mind throwing a couple back w/y’all

Same as “Frieren“, (not directly relate to reality, but) the underlying values of certain culture are a little strongly dis-covered here( ← easily make misunderstundings shallowly). in my case, I feel such thought is influenced to me by ancests(?). Their pride and strength for peace are fundamentaly misunderstood likely as coward...but not at all. acturelly they were peaceful but strict to themselves and have real faught by and for the flow of that times surely to “protect“. So…some want to know how the work emphasis on the author's is accept how the thoughts are understood. VS is really interesting the most, for human thoughts. Honest opinions and points of view of others is really what we wants to know at these mental(?) gunle. Tony-san is the right person at that point👍 It doesn't matter what field it is in, but it's interesting with that deserves an opinion from an expert or reliable person.

Personally, this point of story marks an ending to Vinland Saga as I think the story and the characters comes to a circle. Not to say what lies beyond this point in the manga is worse or anything. Thorfinn now is a fully fledged character with a set of moral and a set ideal. Going onward is the journey to realize it and to convince others to it.

P_ateric

Just to be clear Season 2 isn’t the end of Vinland Saga. The end of this season marks about the halfway point of the story but there’s still more to come we just unfortunately don’t know when. Also I’ve seen so, so many anime with idealistic protagonists who dream of idealistic worlds but what really gets me about Vinland Saga is that that idealism feels earned. While I was surprised Canute left the farm I felt completely satisfied because it felt like the show had earned this idealistic ending thanks to all the development and progression throughout the season. Can’t wait to see the reaction to the final episode!

AussieBoy

He said to wait until the next episode for suggestions.

James

After watching this episode, I kept thinking how can the writing and visuals in a 20 minute anime episode be better than most of the movies I've seen recently. This episode, along with the rest of the season, really hit me in the core.

James

to your eternity is FIRE

Jet Man

cant wait to see what is on the next poll, will suggest peak on the next episode.

SKAOG

One of my favorite episodes of the entire anime. Thanks Tony for picking up this show; I didn't know I needed this rewatch! I'm so sad it's ending soon :(For recommendations when this ends, To Your Eternity would be...entertaining? Honestly, I've read other folks' suggestions and they're probably better than this one but I just thought I'd put it out there since I have the opportunity
