In episode 2 they mentioned that Ketil wants Olmar to succeed him leading the farm. At that point we didn't know Thorgil existed. However, he is probably sworn in as one of the Danish thegn, thus his duty is to the king not the family and it's business despite being the older son.

While it is true that Drott is huge, Thorfinn at the same time is underdeveloped because he didnt have nutritious meals from the young age that he joined Askeladd, and it shows in his stunted growth compared to other adults.
