On the point of the cauldron that came from nowhere, Ed is an alchemist and as he mentioned later on, because of the blood everywhere iron is in no short supply in that dimension. Granted, I do think he was a bit quick to resort to eating his shoes but hey, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

I love this part of the show because both the music and plot build-up do a really good job of giving you the feeling that something big's coming
