Vinland Saga S2 Ep 14

and here we are with a masterpiece episode....
it's difficult to fathom the pain.

man....
LOL the 5 minute music tangent Tony at the start, LOL SORRY

Vinland Saga S2 Ep 14

Comments

I’m gonna echo the popular opinion here but I love your music tangents. It was my dream to live and breathe music but my family wouldn’t allow it. Not trying to trauma dump here, just trying to say that when you speak from your experience I value the insight to be gained from that a great deal. I be low key living vicariously through internet strangers lol

mrzoomzoom

Personally, I love tangent Tony lol you always bring an interesting perspective with insight I hardly get elsewhere, which is why I joined as a Patreon member from YouTube. Keep it up, man.

Surleaux

For some reason, every time Vinland Saga has an episode 14, it's a masterpiece and hits different. Season 1 did it, this is no different.

Hans Wurst

What's really wild about her VA is that apparently this is only her third anime VA role ever. Aside from her total of 4 anime VA roles with maybe some roles being uncredited and her latest role being for Castlevania: Nocturne.

Levi Blair

@AJ yeah 3-gatsu no lion is one of the examples of an odd labeling because it is listed as Seinen but I agree it doesn't feel like a show I'd think fits the Seinen expectations for a lot of its runtime. Similar to how I find it weird that AOT (mostly post season 1) and Chainsaw Man (specifically in the back half of manga pt 1 that isn't animated yet and onwards) is listed as shounen which again feels like an odd labeling. Hell the weirdest labeling of Seinen I've ever seen is for a show called Non-Non Biyori, which if you don't know it is about a girl who moves from the city to a very rural town, like 1 classroom that contains all grades with half the grades not even having students and only one or two having more than one person in the grade type rural and effectively is a slice of life light comedy about these kids rural lives. Again for a lot of the time the only reason these examples retain their Seinen/Shounen labels is because of the magazine/publisher that they were released under.

Levi Blair

Idk, I think it's Shounen, but yeah, I think he would enjoy that.

SKAOG

I don't know if you would categorize 3-gatsu no lion as Seinen, but I think he would dig that as well

AJ

Yeah I made an additional comment about "mislabeled" anime, and AoT is the perfect example being a Shounen targeted anime that's mature

SKAOG

@DrumRollTony Reacts seinen isn't really a genre just a description for "target audience" just like shounen (most often "chosen" by what manga publication it comes from). Seinen is adult targeted and shounen is kid/teen targeted, so it doesn't really have much to do with genre or hard lines on content. Just giving a heads up so it doesn't get confused as seinen always equaling Vinland Saga type content or that shounen always equals Demon Slayer/JJK content, both could be anything from sports to cooking to drama to action as well as content either or both suited to an adults/teens potential taste. I mean easy example to sum up my point is Attack on Titan is a shounen series.

Levi Blair

Monster would make an amazing replacement for the "mature and thoughtful" anime slot after he finishes Vinland Saga, though it's 74 episode runtime might be a bit to long of an ask even at 2 episodes a week would make up roughly 70% percent of a year of it being on the schedule. Despite how amazing Monster is maybe going for something shorter to fill that specific gap like Serial Experiments Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, From the New World, Mushishi, Paranoia Agent or depending on if you see these last ones like that then Madoka Magica or March Comes in Like a Lion (sure these last two aren't as mature in tone but they are undeniably mature and thoughtful in their content). I would include Bokurano here but I think the content of one of it's episodes around ep 6/7/8 would likely be crossing a line for both Tony and many viewers.

Levi Blair

Sorry for the essay but your discussion points and this episodes thematic content really struck a cord with me in a meaningful way. Also I apologize for including the personal stuff I just think it's relevant here. The symbolical use of storms in this episode is fantastic especially because of how we hear it from numerous sides each with their own nuance. Sverkal's line of "I'm sorry I can't help you" after that story just tore me up same with "I lost my son because of pots", then the story unfolded and it just hammered in the point of how unnecessary conflict and risk causes so much pointless suffering, that wealth and resources were not worth that loss and more people both in and out of the narrative need to realize that you just shouldn't risk what you love like that. Lastly while yes all this messaging is more severe in this era but even in modern day we have parallels even within "privileged" living. Is it worth moving multiple states away from your family and friends for a job that pays let's say 30% more? Yeah the money and everything is nice and will very likely improve your quality of life but your exchanging actual visits with your parents and time with friends for cash, then instead of having lets just say 5 more years of visiting with and being near your parents your exchanging that for however many phone-calls per week/month with them and then at some point they are either just gone or about to be, so even if you come back for that time you've still exchanged time with loved ones for money and personally I find that incredibly sad especially when it doesn't really hit until it's too late to realize you would have taken time with them over that money. There is a balance to be had and it isn't inherently wrong to want more and do better for yourself even when it involves sacrifices but all to often there is a lack of objectivity or underestimation in what we are trading/risking. We all want to strive for something better and that's good but like with the fight over iron we need to consider what we are both definitely and possibly giving up in exchange for that because sometimes it's just too late to realize it wasn't worth it. My dad died after a short battle (as far as post diagnosis) with pancreatic cancer almost exactly a year ago, I live independently and at the time was really hurting financially and basically just stuck to working as much as possible keeping me away more than I should have been and was only able to visit briefly and infrequently because of that. It wasn't like I never visited or helped out but overall I left my mom to stay at their home and take care of him for more time than I should have and my dad got way less time with his son during that period than he should have and it was because I was what I saw as reasonably occupied by fixing my financial burden as quickly as I could. I shouldn't have chosen to prioritize resources over loved ones to the degree I did and just like these characters I ended up regretting it because at the time I didn't see that I would regret it or really even fully understand what I was doing meant. Everyone please examine what your ambitions can and do cost you, it's too easy to overlook many things when you've got something within reach "worth" exchanging/changing what you already have, striving for more isn't a bad thing but don't get too enticed by what you don't have without really truly considering what you do have. On the talk about over overproduction of music just making it less real I couldn't agree more. Like post recording production/mastering is definitely important for the sake of it working as well as possible on as many speaker setups as possible as well as a degree of fine editing to further make the track "as intended" in a sense is all good but when it's filters on filters as well as tons of clear rearranging/editing of tracks there comes a point pretty quickly imo when it's just annoying and sometimes downright frustrating. Why would anyone want hyper-produced and scrubbed clean 10 times over sound instead of actually hearing what the competent musicians are really doing, let us hear THEIR sound not the producers sound. Good musicians already offer plenty of their own unique traits to even the same progressions but when it gets overproduced all those unique details in their musicianship get filtered down into one monotonous version of it. The live show point you brought up with your students answers hurt my soul. I basically grew up in the heavy metal scene and the old school ethos is still 100% with me. This kind of overproduction was like the same degree of cardinal sin as being shit live or selling out to pop-sensibilities. Give me the real music from the artists rather than music "played" by artists that is MADE by the producer. Post tracking work is important but overdoing it is just killing any soul the music had in the first place. Of course studio music thats all made via software is a different story altogether because its not messing with tracked performances but that's neither here nor there. Again I'm seriously sorry for the essay and lecturing but even though we see these sorts of things in extremes here that doesn't mean it's principle isn't still relevant now.

Levi Blair

sry for my perfect pointless comment, only touches on "Zombie Land Saga" , the work that has very little connection to Vinland Saga. However, I was just looking for the op1 of “Machikado Mazoku “ on YT, then I noticed its copyright is too strict! It exists only at official site⁉︎ I think that...probably Tony-san never watch that work, so I wanted to know how he will analyze it...seems impossible

koax I.N

I understand that some Senpai-users here's comments love the OP, only about simple-feelings though... but come to me, it took so while to me to get used to all the OP&ED, regardless of the e-voice or sound quality. S, surely, "There's almost no Japanese!" was also irrelevant. Anyway, it's strange that other people's tastes at the time are criticized. (My google translation says so. …←criticizing G-trans is not paradoxical...I dont get the meaning written here, I tried back-translating it,.. became incomprehensible...not ok g〇〇gle... Ignoring the time setting, I've never even been to the area around the Jutland Peninsula, but I can't help it if someone tells me to like 3(4)bigB's Symphony till I love them all for the first time in this hot midsummer. I'd rather feel at ease if they force I will listen "Machikado-tangent", even though it's just a spelling idea. Oh? It's much cooler in Seattle compared to Japan, jealous.

koax I.N

It's a slower paced show, but yes, very good.

Jet Man

my bad, i meant to reply directly to tony when i made my comment about the vocaloid stuff. To clarify, when I say they approach it differently, I meant more in the sense of, the usage of autotune itself isn't as frowned upon to an outside listener in japan. But where I live, growing up it always seemed like as soon as a song where it is all autotuned is heard, its like an instant no for most people. The reason I mentioned vocaloid is just because the advent of the sound banks has influenced how the technology is perceived in japan and so the sythesised/mechanical voice isnt as "grating/jarring" as my mates put it, compared to if I showed a random aussie person around me. In saying all that, I actually no clue about music (here for the anime reaction) but just wanted to offer my viewpoint after the observation about the dislike for the song is all.

tuyen le

Anime has very bad pacing. A lot of people recommend manga.

Meru Tenchin

Oh yeah, can't believe I forgot "Monster"

SKAOG

Yeah I think a Seinen only poll is a great idea, so that it's not just Shounen anime constantly. As others have mentioned, sometimes stuff that is tagged Shounen can be pretty mature, so you could include general mature anime to include those which have been "mislabeled".

SKAOG

Man, here we go again🥲

DrumRollTony

As an artist in the visual fields I really feel that tangent in the beginning 100% because nowadays it really does feel like everything is losing its organic nature and feel in favour of this machine polished style. I feel it in my field too and its a shame bc if you arent someone working behind the scenes it never really occurs to you as a consumer bc thats what the market is selling you and saturated with, to the point where people think thats what makes good art. now nothing wrong with it in some spaces but just like you said, the popularity of it and lack of awareness around how it as a technique just overshadows many other creative and more organic artworks is really what sucks the most about it, especially when artists feel the pressure to buy into it for the approval of fans and corporations.

Yuyu

@tuyen le I think Lixien already touched on most of what I would have replied but I want to double down on saying that Vocaloid is not the same as autotune or pitch correction in post-production. To your comment about Japan being different... I have spent 0 hours in a Japanese studio... so it's not like I have first-hand experience with Japan's recording session BUT the approach to sound design is pretty universal as far as engineering goes. The whole point in going on this tangent in this video is that the original person who commented honestly thought that since they heard the vocalist sound processed in several songs across the board... somehow that is HOW they really sound. That is obviously not the case but it really speaks to the blissful ignorance of people that listen to music vs having any real understanding of how the voice works as an instrument.

DrumRollTony

Hmm yeah, I'm aware lol (my profile pic is a drawing of my oc based on Ai Kotoba IV by DECO*27 and I do Japanese covers as a hobby so I do have some experience with audio engineering ) and Tony I think has some videos reacting to Vocaloid, but how does Vocaloid have anything to do with pitch correction in Japan? Japanese people probably does pitch correction the same as every other person, it depends on the audio engineer and their preferences with software and the way they do things, but yeah. The approach to music might be different, for sure but that doesnt have anything to do with autotune/pitch correction. Just because they have Vocaloid music which is based on using artificial voices doesn't really affect if they use more pitch correction or not in their music. It depends on the type of music and the artist preferences, like everywhere else.

Lixien

I don’t think this has been touched on yet but Japanese people approach autotune pretty differently. While I don’t know the whole history of it but whilst I was living in Japan, I realised just how big vocaloid music really is over there. if you are unaware of what vocaloid is, it’s essentially a program to make music using synthesised vocals with an anime virtual singer model (look up hatsune miku). But it’s also used pretty often in Japanese Hip Hop and bands like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (though its more usage of a voice decoder than autotune) and UVERworld

tuyen le

Yes having a seinen only poll would be really great. Berserk 1997 will finally have a chance

kinetic98

Yeah Monster is amazing

HaukurE

@Jet Man Yeah, Studio Gek has a slot just for seinen anime which is currently held by Code Gease.

James

hey man if the episode makes you feel like going on a tangent then by all means. I love to see that kind of stuff and it's a big part of why I came here

An Nguyen

As much as I want Tony to watch Kingdom, season 1 and 2 is rough to watch. The animation studio did not do the manga justice at all. Season 3 does get better but man having to sit through the first 2 seasons is just…unpleasant.

Mirrorline

Seeing Thorfinn’s face when Arnheid told her story was so sad because it reminded him of his old self when he was raiding villages. Also, another popular seinen show that a lot of people recommend is Monster. I personally haven’t watch it myself but I’ve been hearing a lot of good feedback for it.

Mirrorline

I like Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Specifically the recent remake, as I haven't seen the original. But I think some may find the plot to be a little slow at times, and it also has political plots that Tony expressed not being a huge fan of during the Code Geass reactions. So I'm not sure that one is a good fit.

Alberto Munoz

Arnheid’s VA really fucking kills it in this anime, genuinely she might be one of the best I’ve ever heard period. Especially in later episodes.

Chelly

If we enter this area, this lable doenst say much what to expect from anime. And it's not clear sometimes to which cathegory anime falls. According to MAL Vinland Saga and Erased are Seinen, while Demon Slayer and FMAB are Shonen =) So be carefull, Tony. It may be a trap.

d_swordfish

So maybe what follows Vinland Saga is a "suggest the next Seinen anime" followed by a "vote for the next Seinen anime" and it would feel like a more fitting follow up, even though this show has a pair of shoes that cannot be properly filled. Also, while I have never seen it myself (but would welcome it here) I'm sure the old school Berserk would match that grim, somewhat gritty feel this show has presented.

Jet Man

I think I found that slow moving piano piece. It's appears to be called Rusty Sword. https://youtu.be/wnfPGihkIvs?si=Dk9m0705bHejich4

Jet Man

100%

DrumRollTony

Yeah if something can't possibly win a poll Ill have to just try it out without a vote. OK, so thanks for that info. I didn't know that Seinen is the name qualifier I need to look out for. A lot of these shows feel like stuff for kids. Some are cool and some def are like "ok .. uh why am I watching this?"

DrumRollTony

I really respect Einar for how he... well, maybe not how he reacted to the Gardar situation, but what he was thinking. He wasn't immediately jealous. He supported Gardar because that meant the woman he loved would be free. That's a real guy right there.

A37

EVERYTHING in the modern world definitely is. Including instrumental stuff. This song has higher saturated vocal levels tho. If you want to cross compare Ado, you can. Ado has processed stuff as well. But she is a good example of someone who has some really nice organic sounds as well. She also really disguises processed stuff with her gnarly shill scream and wild genre switches

DrumRollTony

30:42 Hi Tony, I mentioned a while back when you asked during a video what is similar to Vinland Saga but you've understandably probably missed it. To preface, each story is unique, but there are stories which have the same vibe as Vinland Saga. They usually have the tag "Seinen" because they targeted towards adults, rather than the "Shounen" anime that you've watched like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen etc. One anime is Kingdom, it is a highly rated Manga/Anime with a bunch of seasons (think on the same tier as Berserk, Vagabond, Vinland Saga etc.) and it's historical like Vinland Saga. I think others have also recommended the old Berserk Anime. Legend of the Galatic Heroes is also highly rated. The only issue is that it will probably lose polls against more popular anime, so you might have to make an exception like you did for Demon Slayer.

SKAOG

It's sadly true, you won't be able to find something of this quality to replace Vinland. The only thing I'd say it's on par or superior is Berserk but that has one of the worst anime adaptations EVER lmao, the Manga is a masterpiece though

Szayel H

WE LOVE TANGENT TONY 🗿🗿 ALL MY HOMIES LOVE TANGENT TONY 🗿🗿

Belac

Some people get offended that when you point this out is like you're telling they don't know how to sing when that's not necessarily true? Practically everything is just Melodyned out/pitch corrected in the studio versions at some level, even the ones that sound "natural" . That also applies to, idk, Ado. And we're not just gonna say that she can't sing now, are we? The problem is when it's more obvious and overdone in certain songs like this one. Some people don't like that sound and that's okay.

Lixien

(Before) Finally, the main story begins(?). I'm glad I was awake and waiting, I'm doing a ritual to prepare myself before watching now...Charging headphone batteries, reading glasses cleaned up, tidying the room, making sure family asleep, setting the air conditioner timer..t〇illetes...all green! (after) Even the beginning of S2-2ndterm-epi2, which is related to the end, feels like the viewing time is compressed. Not sure, it finished so quickly or not...for work’s well-calculated pace. It's a work that strongly emphasizes important storytelling, and it may not even reach the bare minimum, but the small changes in the characters' expressions seem almost intentional. Anyway... as always being asked what I would do in this situation, I think it's dangerous to watch it when you're lacking in energy, especially from this point on(maybe already or not...though), i cheer for Tony-san's expression in the upper right corner of the screen will probably always be displayed. (at the next epi, I may repeat this more strongly or shut up my mouth. truly thx 4 ur up👍

koax I.N

ah i remember you saying you can see visuals when your hear sound thats a funny way to describe the vocals as very angular. i sort of see it the same way
