Steins;Gate Ep 5

The amount of stuff you pick up on a rewatch is NUTS

I enjoy the paradigm that this show presents: what if a delusional conspiracy theorist, stumbles into an actual conspiracy? At what point, if ever, does reality overpower his delusions? Or to phrase it another way: The Boy Who Cried "Evil Organization"

Regarding the Dr. Pepper thing here, if you listen closely he says ドクトル・ペッパー (Dokutoru Peppa~). The official IRL Dr. Pepper brand is ドクター・ペッパー (Dokuta~ Peppa~)

Yea this is important context since it's otherwise hard to read that kurisu is actually a super internet nerd too, those 2 moments are what sells it to the jpn audience but it goes over most eng viewers heads (including me

Oh yeah! This takes place in 2010, when 2ch (The original, Japanese, 4chan) was pretty prominent in Otaku culture. Proof in the pudding is the several 2ch jokes and Otaku references here and there throughout this show! Rather, you could say this show was built off of the Otaku culture, given how cringy and outsider'y the main cast is. They each don't exactly fit into society in one way or another, and if we see them interacting with others it's going to be relugated to Idol shows or Maid Cafes as we've seen so far. This all said... Aside from those already mentioned otaku things, we've got some unexplored dialogue that fits in here as well! Usually you'd have the Terminology glossary from the visual novel so you can read about the references and where it comes from, but the Anime doesn't have that unfortunately. So! For those of you still reading, here's two bits! In the last episode, Mr. DrumRoll was asking what was going on with Kurisu and why she seemingly cut herself off after saying "That's just a conspiracy theory, thank you very-". Okabe asked what's wrong, and she moved the conversation along rather quickly. Well! Daru said it himself as well at the Rai-Net tournament too! The full phrase is: "Honto ni arigatou gozaimashita" which is pretty innocuous by itself, but when used like how Kurisu or Daru were using it, it turns into a sarcastic remark to mock or make fun of the person they're responding to while also ending the conversation to have the last word. This was a rather large trend for 2chan folks as you could imagine, not something you'd use in the typical polite and friendly Japanese conversations given how overtly rude and aggressive it is. In this episode, Okabe manages to find the IBN and brings it to Daru. Daru then calls out "That's why we love you!" which *should* be followed up with "That's why we admire you!" to complete the JoJo Part 1 reference. But! Kurisu, knowing this rather obscure 2ch meme, followed it up with "I don't admire him, though." This catches everyone's attention briefly, before she quickly moves the conversation along *again!* On another note: They actually said "Dr. Pepper!" Which is a BIG thing considering the IP strictness Japan has. It's why you'll only ever see "WcDonalds" or "StarBocks" instead of "McDonalds" and "StarBucks", because otherwise they'd be shut down by said organizations for using their IP without authorization! Not to mention the amount of hoops they'd have to jump through afterwards for them. In other words, they must have went through quite the hassle to use the Dr. Pepper brand! Which goes to show that it truly IS the drink of intellectuals!! Lol

Honestly okabe is the average anime fan you would meet online in like 2008 lmao

“I wish this would be more about time travel.” Well, you got your wish!

Lol. If I had time to do a movie reaction I would. Just too long

I'm glad you're enjoying these early episodes since there are some people who will say that Steins;Gate is boring in the beginning. Personally for me, I was intrigued by the mystery in the story, and I like how they incorporated real-life concepts/theories such as using Kerr black holes for time travel or the idea of "worldlines" from Many-Worlds-Interpretation (MWI) from quantum mechanics. Okabe and Mayuri are interesting characters, and everything will eventually make sense with those two later in the season.
