The era of Three kingdoms is well-known by a lot of people, compared to other dynasty/era in Chinese history. The fact that Japanese created an anime about a Chinese historical figure just showed how popular Kongming and the entire Three Kingdoms era are (both Japan and Korea, and some Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam were to some extent influenced by ancient China). In that era, Kongming is an extremely smart “tactician”, assisting his king Liu Bei. You can see him as the brain of Liu’s Kingdom “Shu”. The last part of this episode, when Kongming said he listened to Eiko’s singing “thrice” and moved by her, is a reference to Liu Bei’s recruiting Kongming. The story goes like this: Liu Bei heard that there is a genius named Kongming and so he tried to recruit him. Kongming turned him down twice. Even Liu Bei’s friends were unhappy and thought this dude arrogant. Liu Bei insisted to recruit him and succeeded in the third time. To be honest, this show is way better if you know the historical context.
