Vinland Saga Ep 24 🔥

In my opinion the high expectation you had for askeladd at the start of the anime are now met ^^. I recall you been a bit disappointed in him when he faced thor, like you expected dialogue ( i did too btw ) but he just cowardly kill him in the end. And after re-watching it with you i see there is a lot if hint that his way of seeing things is more complex than it look (the total opposite of Danes, whom he hate and who are shown as simply here to fight, kill and die. The Askeladd character is fascinating, and from now on thorfinn will be even more interessting !

A little late to the party here, just finished watching your react to this first season. Thank you so much for these, love how genuine you are on them.

Enemy

The montage/sequence of different people you see at the end of the episode that you don’t recognise, they are not Thorfin at different stages of life, but new characters you’ll meet throughout the rest of the story who are very important. 2 of them who which haven’t even appeared in the anime yet apart from that sequence. Also I'm glad you’re enjoying the series, Vinland saga is my third favourite anime, and I’ve seen very many. It’s definitely one of the best written pieces of fiction in existence and it’s been enjoyable watching your reactions to it. Enjoy Season 2! It’s definitely an experience…(worth it).

Lmao

Queen Ruka

hey lets not rag on us peeps with adhd, we like it too!

I hadn't considered the possibility that Canute could have just play acted a fight with Askeladd but I think the thinking was that by having Canute actually be the one to kill him in front of everyone, he could assure the other lords' loyalty to him. I think that was the play the minute Askeladd drew his sword on the king. Capturing him and sentencing him to death and then helping him escape or something just isn't as visceral and it wouldn't have been as effective at quieting suspicions that Canute was complicit in the killing.

So in case you never noticed, this is why whenever Askeladd swore an oath/promise he intended to honor, he'd always swear on Artorius not Odin. Even in the duel with Thors, he initially swears on Odin, but then after being beaten, and realizing what kind of man Thors was, he swears on Artorius to honor his loss and let everyone go. On a totally separate note, I really enjoy reactions as a way to rewatch anime or any show. Somewhere down the line, because obviously there's a lot of new stuff to watch, it might be cool to do a rewatch of AoT. If you've never rewatched it, it's really rewarding. All the forshadowing and world building is even more obvious and you get so much more appreciation for it.

Ken Shufflebottom

That is why I keep saying "Uhtred!" lol

Now that season one is finished I figured I’d explain something that I don’t know if anyone else has. This anime/manga is loosely based on the Vinland Sagas a collection of two tales told about this period in English history. Though the anime doesn’t really correlate much at all with what the tales said, the tales were even further removed from reality than the anime to them, but a lot of this is true history. Canute really did become king and go about his duties. Don’t wanna spoil that even if it is real history, but it’s super cool. If you ever watched or read The Last Kingdom series you’d see and hear a lot of crossovers, even if they’re about 100? Years or so apart.

Avalon

Eren didnt really care whether the rumbling was completed or not since eldians were safe either way 😭 (Tony Spoiler alert) A better example would be Lelouchs death scene

skrrt

The characters that were previewed at the end of the episode are the ones who will be appearing in Thorfinn's life. Look forward to season 2! The guy at the end has red hair, so he is not Thorfinn, lmao. We had to wait for 4 years for the second season back then, so I hope the third season doesn't take that long. Please, Mappa/Wit!!!!

Mirrorline

Those people at the end are a teaser of what's to come. Magnificent episode and series. End of the Prologue. Onto season 2!

EdTheAlchemist

I prefer it as well, but it's also doing something different and some people prefer S1's vibe, which I can understand

Hermit

Such an incredible anime and season 2 is even better in my opinion

V STAN

Askeladd is such an incredible character. I feel like basically everyone gets to this point and is like "I'm CRYING over ASKELADD?? The dude who killed THORS???" I believe the author of the original manga has said that Askeladd wasn't originally intended to become such a focus character, but that as he was writing, Askeladd seemed to come to life and guided a lot of the story in ways that were unexpected. I think that's the way that all the best characters manifest, where the author goes through a process of discovery during the writing. Stoked you enjoyed S1 so much, and I cannot wait to see what you think of S2 - I'm confident you are gonna love it. Your comment early in this one about anime sometimes feeling like a "roll of the dice" I think reflects the way that a lot of the medium is targeted at younger audiences, but this show is an example of a "seinen", a term you might've seen in the comments before. Basically, this story is targeted at more adult readers/viewers, and as such can do a better job at tackling more nuanced themes. S2 is a peak example of that.

Oxbox

Weird but unique thinking ig

Meru Tenchin

The poor king. The haircut he asked for turned out nothing like what he wanted.

Jet Man

askeladd killed his own father, thorfinn's, canute's (twice) and when he realised he became their new father he killed himself. lmao

dg_2drunk

Fun fact , this episode is rank 4 in imdb top tv episodes, and thats not just the anime category that's comparing to all episodic tv shows

Kegs

One of my favorite episodes of anime period!

Lulu

When you start 2 i recommend you not to think about people who say bad things about s2 you’re gonna love it trust. Just imagine when someone hates on frieren and that’s it, you loved it.

Meru Tenchin

So excited to see your reaction to season 2! One of the best seasons of television history imo

AussieBoy

It’s weird knowing that this is just prologue. Certainly best prologue in anime period lol.

Meru Tenchin

Askeladd's ancestor was that person

FullHeart

Fuck dude this episode hurts no matter how many times you see it. Askeladd is such an insanely well written character.

FullHeart

yeah don't blame you for that, which is why i commented again in case you missed it. Now I can confirm that you definitely know the name. I think the trick is to comment as early as possible from when a reaction is uploaded, as you seem to be noticing my comments when i watch the reaction and comment ASAP. I love the composer Yutaka Yamada, his Tokyo Ghoul OSTs are also really nice.

SKAOG

There was no way for him to spare Askeladd because it was necessary to avoid the impression that he killed the king on Canute's orders. Canute was on shaky ground because his previous unsuitability as a king was well known and his brother Harald back in Denmark is the heir apparent. The power move where he asks Floki who the commander of the forces in England is was only possible because he both demonstrated that he wasn't responsible for killing his father, and that he was capable of killing like a "true" Danish king would be.

Anorus

The assignment was to kill Askeladd after he went "mad", but then Thorkell stated that it is the master who should take card of the dog, so Canute had to do it himself. Askeladd has the blood of the hero Artorius ("Lucius Artorius Castus" is Askeladd's real name), which is why he claimed that he is the legitimate ruler of Brittania.

SKAOG

Re-watching the finale after having watched aot fully made me realise how Askeladd pulled an eren move by making himself a villain that has to be cut down by the people he wants to so that they can be considered heroes

Suhas M

I cant possibly see every comment between youtube and patreon. If you mentioned it previously it got lost in the sauce because I also had a poll up... fuck ton of comments

DrumRollTony

I think Askeladd’s real name was a real person that not much is known about apart from him being a Roman commander. But there’s some that say this real person inspired the character of King Arthur. That part was confusing for me too. Now on to season 2!

Sarai

Hi Tony, as mentioned in the previous post, the OST that plays at 5:47 is "Wildest History"

SKAOG

Season 2 is amazing also. People who dont like it as much have ADHD or something.

Queen Ruka

End of the prologue always hits hard. Peakland Saga.
