japan was still coming to terms sociologically and culturally with its rapid post war boom, the western characteristics the nation was taking vs the more traditional Japanese society ideas, and like the counter culture in the us there was the young people born after/durning the war who were yearning to get out of the post war conservative lifestyle, and the older more conservative generation who went through the war, you even saw that in the previous ep where sen was talking about being half japanese because his mother "seduced" a enemy sailor, ie an american sailor and a japanese woman got together, soemthing happened, and the child got left with grandma, there were alot of "war brides" in post war japan, even though technically the military forbid fraternization with the populace.
