What I like about this show is that they go out of their way to record the full performances of the other schools when they absolutely do not need to. In this episode for example the full recording of Polovtsian Dances (32:12) really puts into perspective how good Minami Junior High was and why their second/silver was a shock to everyone. Also listening to Seira Joshi (15:50) shows Kitauji is up against top contenders for Nationals leaving little room to slack off despite their lax schedule. At (47:45) it's worth noting that while it's never mentioned in the anime: “Minami Junior High is famous for its excellent woodwinds, particularly the flutes being the strongest and most outstanding section in the band for many years.” This could be why Minami did not want just anyone on their flute section and instead required students with past experience, hence owning their own flute. Definitely a barrier to entry but at (46:53) Kumiko instantly recognizes that sound to be a Minami flute. Talk about being able to recognize a band simply by the way a certain section plays.
