Cozy Isekai Craftsman, ch 24

Joe's heart raced as he stared in horror at the monster's ghastly grin, a sight that seemed to belong in nightmares and horror movies. The creature's jaw unhinged, tearing its skin and stretching it to the extreme as if it were made of rubber. Rows of razor-sharp teeth glistened in the dim light, eager to tear apart anything in their path. The monster's eyes glinted with a malevolent gleam, as if it relished the thought of causing chaos and destruction.

Suddenly, the ground quaked beneath their feet as the monster stepped onto the patio, crushing the bricks that Joe had laid with such care only days before. Fear seized Joe’s chest as the monster lunged forward, its massive claws aimed at the defenseless Lucas.

But the seasoned sheriff was not one to be underestimated. With lightning-fast reflexes, he dodged and weaved around the monster's attacks with the grace of a trained dancer. Joe watched in awe as the sheriff moved with the fluidity of water, each step calculated and precise. His saber flashed in the air, creating a barrier of steel that kept the monster at bay.

It was a breathtaking display of skill and courage, unlike anything Joe had ever witnessed before. He couldn't help but marvel at the sheriff's ability to move so effortlessly, to command the space around him with such finesse.

Hope flickered in Joe's chest as he watched the skilled sheriff expertly maneuver around the monstrous creature's attacks. But in a split second, everything changed. The monster's massive claws closed around Lucas's saber, its strength cutting through the metal with ease. The saber snapped in two, leaving Lucas defenseless.

Joe's heart thundered in his chest as he watched Lucas backflip away from the monster, creating a safe distance between them. The sheriff was undaunted, but Joe could see the beads of sweat on his forehead and heard the ragged edge to his breath.

Lucas turned to face the partygoers, his eyes scanning their faces with a fierce intensity. "Can you take the others and get out of here?" he asked, his voice firm and commanding. Despite his exhausted disposition, the sheriff did not seem the least bit panicked.

Joe hesitated for a moment, his eyes flickering back to the monster that loomed in front of them. Fear gripped his chest like a vise, but he knew that they had to get to safety. With a determined nod, he turned to the others and raised his voice above the chaos.

Joe's heart plummeted as he watched Brian, John, and Lee grab handfuls of pebbles from one of the buckets he had painstakingly filled. "No," he stammered, but it was too late. The children had already found one of his many buckets of pebbles, their faces alight with excitement.

Despite their parents' warnings, the children seemed to believe that Joe's pebbles held some kind of mystical power, that each one was a weapon capable of taking down the deadliest of monsters. They had no idea of the danger they were in, no concept of the true terror that loomed before them.

With a sense of dread, Joe watched as the pebbles flew through the air, one by one, hurtling towards the monster with reckless abandon. The sound of impact echoed through the air as the stones struck the creature, but it seemed more confused than irritated by the onslaught.

Joe felt a wave of anger and frustration wash over him. The children had no idea of the true danger they were in, and their ignorance could cost them their lives. Worst yet, it was their faith in him and his abilities that they had thrown the pebbles in the first place.

Caroline's grip on the children was firm, yanking them away from the pebbles like they were walking on a minefield. Joe watched her with a mix of fear and admiration. Her eyes blazed with a fierce determination that Joe had never seen before. She was a woman on a mission, and the safety of her family was at stake.

One of the kids opened their mouth to protest, but Caroline shut them down with a withering look. It was clear that this was no time for games. They were facing a real danger, a monster that could easily shatter bones and crush lives. It lurked in a different world, one where chaos reigned and terror ruled.

Rick groaned, his injured arm dangling by his side like a useless appendage. Joe felt a pang of guilt for not being able to protect his friend. Rick was a father and a husband, and Joe knew that he would do anything to shield his family from harm. Despite his injury, Rick stood tall and defiant, ready to take on whatever came his way.

The tension was palpable, as if the air itself was crackling with electricity. Rick gritted his teeth and turned to Lucas, desperation etched on his face. "Did the protection field fail so quickly?" he asked, his voice strained.

Lucas didn't answer immediately, his gaze fixed on the monster. "We'll talk later," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Right now, we need to deal with this."

Joe's heart raced as he watched the monster lurch forward, its grotesque form looming over them. He had no idea what they were talking about, but he knew that they were running out of time. The creature was getting closer.

Suddenly, Emily darted past Joe and Lucas, moving with a grace and speed that left Joe breathless. Lucas tried to grab her, but she was too quick for him. Joe watched in awe as Emily, her lizard kin blood giving her extraordinary abilities, dodged the monster's deadly claws with lightning-fast reflexes.

Joe felt a pang of fear as he realized that Emily had no weapon. She was unarmed and vulnerable, facing off against a creature that could easily crush her with a single blow. He wanted to help, to do something, anything, but he was frozen in place, his body paralyzed with fear.

Emily, however, was not afraid. She was fierce and determined, her eyes blazing with a fiery resolve. As the monster swiped at her head, she dodged underneath its arm and landed a devastating punch on its elbow. Joe felt a surge of pride and awe as he watched her in action.

The monster recoiled from Emily's powerful blow, stumbling back as if struck by a speeding truck. It spun in place, its inhuman form contorting in strange ways, but it managed to regain its footing and launch another attack. Joe watched in horror as the monster's talons sliced through the air, heading straight for Emily's vulnerable body.

Lucas leaped forward, trying to shield Emily from the monster's deadly claws, but it was too late. The talons struck Emily's torso with a sickening thud, the sound of metal meeting flesh ringing in Joe's ears. Emily was thrown back with incredible force, hurtling through the air for at least thirty feet before crashing to the ground.

Joe's heart was pounding in his chest as he watched Emily struggle to her feet.

But Emily was unfazed. She looked down at her stomach, where the monster's talons should have pierced her skin. There wasn't even a scratch. Her eyes widened in realization, and she turned to Joe with a grin of triumph. Joe felt a glimmer of hope flicker in his chest.

Joe's mind raced as he tried to make sense of what had just happened. It dawned on him that the properties he had imbued into Emily's dress, like resistance to tearing, were the very qualities the dress needed to withstand the monster's lethal talons. Relief flooded through him as he realized that his preparations had paid off, but he knew that they couldn't let their guard down just yet.

As he watched Emily dust herself off, Joe couldn't help but marvel at her strength and resilience. With the blood of Thomas, a powerful lizard kin, flowing through her veins, she was able to withstand even the most devastating attacks.

Joe's heart raced as he watched Emily narrowly dodge the monster's deadly claw. He couldn't help but think about what would have happened if Ava hadn't lent her that dress. The thought sent shivers down his spine. But the dress's enchantment had held, and Emily emerged unscathed. Joe let out a victorious fist pump, feeling a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.

The monster seemed just as baffled as Emily, and for a moment, they all stood frozen in confusion. Lucas took advantage of the hesitation and lunged forward with his snapped saber, slicing into the monster's hide. It was a shallow cut, but the creature let out an ear-piercing roar, thrashing wildly.

Joe watched as Lucas delivered a series of swift and calculated attacks. He knew that Lucas couldn't keep up the momentum forever. Eventually, he would have to exhale and break the rhythm, giving the monster an opportunity to strike back.

Rick started to advance.

Joe grabbed his collar, pulling him back.

Rick scowled, but Joe shook his head in warning. "You're a guard, not a soldier," he reminded him firmly. "Protect your family."

Rick's eyes bulged wide like a man startled from a dream. He stumbled back, sucking in a deep breath, and slowly exhaled. Joe watched him as he moved back to his family. Caroline clutched their children close, huddled on the ground, trying to shield them from the horror unfolding before them.

Lucas was still battling the beast, his saber useless against its impenetrable hide. Joe felt a pang of helplessness, knowing there was nothing he could do to aid his friend. Emily was the only other one with a fighting chance, but she was already winded from her previous encounter with the monster.

Then, a spark of inspiration lit within Joe's mind. He looked around, his eyes scanning the chaos. Suddenly, he knew what to do. "Emily, come this way!" he shouted urgently. "I can protect everyone!"

Emily looked at Joe with a mix of bewilderment and apprehension, but Ava tugged her along, leading her to Joe's side. Even though she was gasping for air, Emily managed to croak out, "What's your plan?"

Joe gestured to the tablecloth, his mind racing. "Ava, grab that cloth and throw it over the kids, Caroline, and Rick," he instructed urgently.

Without a second thought, Ava rushed to do as he asked. In one swift motion, she grabbed the tablecloth and flung it over their heads, creating a makeshift barrier between them and the monster.

Emily still looked confused, but there was no time to explain. Joe had a feeling that they were running out of time. Lucas had reached his limit, and the monster was getting more and more frenzied.

Lucas was now back on the defensive, trying to avoid the monster's deadly claws. He was tiring quickly, and Joe knew that they needed to act fast if they wanted to stand a chance of surviving.

The children were whimpering and clinging to Caroline, their small bodies trembling with fear. Rick's eyes were darting around frantically, scanning for any possible escape routes. But Caroline was the calm in the eye of the storm, soothing them with soft whispers and gentle pats on their backs.

Lucas was still struggling to catch his breath after his intense bout of fighting. He stumbled into Joe, who caught him and held him steady. Lucas nodded his thanks, his eyes filled with a mixture of gratitude and exhaustion.

Joe glanced around, taking in the scene. The monster was also gasping for air, its massive body heaving up and down. There was something about the creature's face that seemed eerily familiar, but Joe couldn't quite put his finger on it.

Lucas's voice broke through his thoughts. "Do you have a plan?"

Joe nodded, his mind racing. "I'm already working on it," he replied tersely.

Without wasting another moment, Joe rushed over to the tablecloth and checked that it was covering everyone snugly, making sure that no part of their bodies was exposed. They were all huddled together like frightened animals, their eyes wide and their hearts pounding with fear. Joe could feel the weight of their expectations on his shoulders, and he knew that he had to act quickly if he wanted to keep them safe.

Ava yelled from beneath the tablecloth, "I hope you know what you're doing!"

Bryan said with the pure faith only a child could have in an adult, “Don’t worry, Ava! Mr. Joe is a clothing wizard!”

Joe sat across from Emily, his heart racing as he tried to keep his cool. She seemed to be in on the secret, her dress pulled taut under the tablecloth, its pastel blue hue shining bright against the drab beige. Without a word, Joe sprang into action, his hands moving with purpose. He grasped the hem of her dress in one hand and the edge of the tablecloth in the other, feeling the adrenaline course through his veins.

With a deft motion, he opened the properties window, his fingers dancing across the keyboard as he worked his magic. The anti-tear and defensive properties of Emily's dress flowed into the tablecloth, imbuing it with a strength and resilience it had never known before. J

Joe pulled out a pebble from his pocket, and a screen opened up in front of it. At the very bottom of the property list, it said hardness +105. A few days earlier, Joe had realized carrying several pebbles in his pockets just to glean one property from each of them at a time was both ridiculous and inefficient. So at night, he had transferred several of the properties to a single pebble which he was holding now. He transferred all of its stiffness and hardness into the tablecloth.

The tablecloth stiffened in an instant, looking like the color of stone. Joe tapped his finger against it and it felt like an impenetrable wall.

The ground shook behind him, and he whirled around to see the monster grabbing Lucas by the torso. The sheriff was thrown into the shed, and he tried to twist mid-air with his superhuman acrobatic skill, but he only smashed into the shed. The shed blew apart in a smattering of splinters and broken wood. Joe's heart squeezed at the idea that the sheriff might be dead. The monster had thrown the sheriff as if he were nothing more than a rag doll.

Joe clenched his jaw, his heart pounding in his chest. He had done everything in his power to protect those under the tablecloth, imbuing it with every property he could think of. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he watched the monster turn its piercing gaze towards him.

The creature cocked its head to the side, as if trying to place Joe. A shiver ran down his spine as the monster spoke, its voice a low rumble. "How do I know you? I've seen you before."

Joe opened his mouth to speak, but before he could utter a single word, a voice echoed from the shed behind the monster. It was Lucas, groaning in pain as he struggled to his feet. Joe's heart swelled with relief as he saw his friend standing, but his relief was short-lived.

With a deep breath, Lucas yelled out to the monster, his voice shaking but determined. "Hey, ugly. I'm the one you want. Remember?"

The creature's gaze flickered towards Joe for a moment longer before turning its attention to Lucas. Joe could see the bruises on his friend's neck and under his eye, evidence of the monster's brutal attack.

Panic surged through Joe's veins, his heart racing as he watched the monster turn its attention towards Lucas. He had come to terms with the possibility of his own death, but seeing his friend defenseless and in harm's way was a fear unlike any he had ever experienced. Lucas had been a constant presence in his life, helping him rebuild the mansion with his own hands and becoming an irreplaceable friend.

Joe's breath caught in his throat as he watched Lucas stand his ground, ready to face his fate even though he had no weapon to defend himself. But then, something caught Joe's eye. A glint of light in the afternoon sun next to Lucas.

In a flash, Joe's mind raced as he realized what it was. He found himself yelling at Lucas, his voice hoarse with fear and urgency. "Look down! Use the scythe!"

Lucas's confusion was palpable, his eyes darting around in confusion before settling on the rubble of the destroyed shed. Joe's heart was racing as he watched his friend's gaze linger on something in the debris.

There, glinting in the light, was the scythe that Joe had used to tend his garden. It was a simple tool, but Joe had put in the effort to transfer all the sharpness properties from the knives he had sharpened every single night for nearly a month. It was the sharpest thing in the yard, and the closest thing they had to a weapon in that moment.

But Joe knew that it wasn't a perfect solution. The scythe was awkward and unwieldy, nothing like the balance and shape of a proper saber. He could only hope that it would be enough to turn the tide in their favor.

Joe watched as the monster's lips twisted into a smirk, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. "A fire farming tool? Do you think such a mundane, idiotic weapon?" The words dripped with disdain and mockery, sending shivers down Joe's spine.

But before Joe could react, Lucas sprang into action. With a swift movement, he picked up the scythe from the rubble and held it with a familiarity that suggested he had wielded it all his life. It was as if the farming tool was an extension of his own body.

In a blur of movement, Lucas dodged the monster's attack, sidestepping the double-handed swipe with the ease of a seasoned warrior. The monster's talons sliced through the air, missing Lucas by a hair's breadth and grazing the salt and pepper black hair of the sheriff. Joe held his breath as he watched the deadly dance between Lucas and the monster, their movements fluid and graceful, yet filled with a raw, primal power.

Lucas's body moved like a force of nature, his muscles coiled and ready to strike. With a fierce cry, he threw himself into the full brunt of the attack, his entire being focused on one goal - to take down the monster.

The scythe in his hands was an extension of his will, a deadly weapon that moved with the grace and fluidity of a dancer. As he pivoted his foot and twisted his hip, the scythe swung in a wide arc, cutting through the air with a sharp whistle.

Joe watched in awe as the scythe made contact with the monster, the blade slicing through its hips with a sickening crunch. The monster let out a bloodcurdling scream, but it was already too late. The scythe had done its work, cleaving through the monster's flesh as if it were made of butter.

For a moment, everything seemed to freeze in time. Joe stared in disbelief as the monster toppled to the ground, its massive body shuddering in its death throes. And then, in a flash of movement, Lucas let go of the scythe, the weapon spinning through the air before hitting Joe with a sickening thud.

The scythe embedded itself in the ground, the blade sinking into the earth like a hot knife through butter. Lucas dropped to both knees, his body heaving with exhaustion and pain. Sweat dripped from his brow, mingling with the blood of the monster.

For a moment, Joe held his breath, wondering if the scythe had done anything at all. But the monster shivered. Its top half of the torso slid off, collapsing into the ground until the bottom half of its body, its legs, dropped to the other side. In a clean even split, the sheriff breathed out heavy and hot. He stood on both feet.

The monster began to wither away, like paper thrown into a fire, evaporating into the atmosphere. Within ten breaths, the monster had completely vanished. Leaving only the silhouette of both halves of its body embedded into the freshly cut grass.

Joe watched in awe as Lucas stood tall and fierce, his eyes fixed on the black crystal at his feet. The monster that had terrorized the town lay defeated, but it was this inky black rock that held Lucas's attention.

As Lucas's fists clenched and his neck bulged with anger, Joe could feel the tension in the air, a palpable energy that seemed to emanate from the crystal itself. It was as if the very air around them had become heavy with the weight of Lucas's fury.

With a sudden burst of rage, Lucas stamped his boot on the crystal, and a deafening popping sound filled the air. Joe flinched as a cloud of black smoke erupted from the shattered crystal, obscuring everything in its path.

As the smoke began to clear, Lucas stood there, his eyes closed, his chest heaving with exhaustion. Joe had never seen the sheriff so spent, so utterly drained of energy.

When Lucas finally caught his breath, he turned to Joe, a broad grin spreading across his face.

Lucas grinned and said, "Cool."
