The bat monster story

This is just something kind of fun, a little extra.  I should have another chapter or maybe even 2 posted of Nora today, but I just did something in less than half an hour for my niece and I thought I'd share.

My niece is an aspiring artist and drew a picture she wanted to share with me.  I thought it was so neat, I just wrote a quick short story about Glons the bat monster.  The story is meant for kids 6-10.

------------------------------

The summer night moon hung in the sky over the field as Glons left his last meal.  The cow had been delicious!  Of course, cows were always delicious.

He checked his weapon belt as he traveled, making sure his lucky sword was ready to be drawn if he needed it.  One could never be too careful while traveling.  Enemies could appear when least expected.

The sword had been a gift when he’d been a young bat monster, and he still cherished it.  The blade had stayed bright and sharp even after all his adventures.  The year before, he’d named the blade Bruce.  For some reason he thought the name fit.

Glons carefully entered the forest, swiveling his huge bat ears to catch every little sound.  He loved to eat cows, but leaving the forest to eat left him out in the open, vulnerable.  Sometimes he just had to take risks for a tasty snack, thought.

Suddenly, another monster leapt out of a tree!  Glons sprang backward, drawing his sword in one smooth motion and slashing.  His attacker managed to evade the strike, but Glons got a good look at his opponent.

A huge form crouched in the darkness.  He’d been attacked by a giant spider monster!  The terrifying creature was as tall as he was, and all eight legs were hairy, twitching as it watched him.

Glons was afraid.  Even as a bat monster, there were other creatures more powerful than him.  He knew he could not let his fear rule him, though.

When the spider attacked again, Glons dove low, dodging a huge leg.  He stabbed, but the spider moved back.  For such a huge monster, it was super fast.  The then it lunged again, Glons dodged the spider’s scary fangs.

SHWING!  SWING!  He chopped twice, and two legs went flying into the night!  The spider hissed in pain, backing up into the trees.

It lunged again!  Glons jumped up and forward, cutting downward with Bruce.  SHWING!  Another giant leg came off!

The huge spider hissed again, louder this time.  The terrible sound made the leaves on the tress tremble, but the beast had been hurt badly.  It backed up, then ran away, leaving a trail of broken bushes.

At first, Glons thought about following, but decided against it.  The giant spider was wounded now, less of a threat, and if he followed it to its lair, it might have friends.  Either way, it would be less dangerous to let it go.

Glons nodded, happy with his decision.  The night was still young, and he was suddenly hungry again!  He chuckled to himself as he cleaned his lucky sword Bruce off on the grass and resheathed it.  He knew that if he took care of the blade, it would take care of him.

Glons swiveled his ears as he walked, listening again.  He’d decided to find a new cow to eat!  They were just so delicious he couldn’t help himself.  He walked quietly, though.  It was good to be careful.

Unfortunately, there were plenty of other monsters that didn’t understand how tasty cows were, and might try to eat him again!
