Hey all.  I'm a little frustrated that I haven't been able to keep up my fiendish writing pace.  A combination of my regular job and a random spike of depression got in the way.

Unfortunately, I am an extroverted writer and I can only create when I'm relatively happy.  Sometimes I wish I was more of the tortured artist type who can just hide away in a closet somewhere and churn out books, but that is not how I'm wired.

Anyway, I just took this picture to show you what it looks like when I am clacking away in a tea shop.  The complicated expression is probably because I'm happy to be writing, but pissed that I am so far behind.

...and a little eccentric in general.  And ENTJ.

Anyway, I'm hoping to have another chapter up tonight, my time!  I think it'll be a favorite!

Last but not least, I am thinking about changing the way my Patreon bills to a prepay version.  I wasn't going to mess with it before, but a few people actually withdrew their pledge right before the end of the month so they wouldn't be charged.

This is why we can't have nice things.

PS - Yes, that is a Fallout shirt because that's how I fucking roll, ya'all.  You can see the pip boy's glorious, wavy hair.

Aww, I liked Eek. I even had a cat named after him (and, coincidentally, another one named Annabelle a few years later). He was so earnestly good-hearted. Oh, and a fun fact: Mr. Rogers (or a parody of him) actually appeared on an episode of Eek the Cat. I remember Eek running from something and finding a series of doors, and opening each one revealed something monstrous and visibly hostile (I can't remember the specifics). He would open each one, scream, and slam the door back before running to the next one. But the third door opened onto a pleasant-looking man in a sweater who asked, "Won't you be my neighbor?" So of course, Eek slammed the door and kept running.

I personally was hoping for bob ross, but yeah, as soon as I heard the sweater, I realized it was mr rogers. I am guessing for copyright and licensing reasons that the actual name will never be stated. I couldn't place the cartoon cat, but it was driving me crazy. Not the uncertainly, the voice. Watching YouTube has brought back memories that I repressed from that series. As an adult however, the series is pretty funny. I just hate his catch phrase with a passion and wish the cartoon cat a horrible prolonged agonizing suffering where even when death knocks, the premises were already vacated.

When life gets you down Turn that frown around Could always fuck a clown I like to imagine the person in costume, honking their nose and pulling gags, never saying a word just how I like it.

Jacob Santos

I don't remember any mention of it in the story, but the fact that you already know how Henry feels about it is a sign that you're a good writer. But I already knew that.

Roy Harmon

I'll actually respond to that here. Fred Rogers did not have sleeve tattoos. However, Henry heard the rumors about Mr. Rogers being a sniper and bought them hook, line, and sinker. Sometimes part of doing research is allowing my characters to still be flawed and not have instant access to google. :P

Blaise Corvin

Also, I'm not sure about the sleeve tattoos. He was never actually in the military, despite the rumors, so that makes me a little skeptical about some of the other things I've heard. He was a Presbyterian minister and, as far as I can tell, an exceptionally decent person. None of that would necessarily preclude sleeve tattoos, but given that he was born in 1928 and presented an unflinchingly direct and honest character, I think it unlikely that he would do something so rebellious and try to hide it with sweaters that his mother made for him. He even had a policy of acting the same way on camera and off, because he felt like "acting" the part would have seemed fake to the children. I'm sorry for going off on a tangent, but I guess I agree with Henry. Fred Rogers really was a hero. So thanks again, Blaise, for the blast to the past!

Roy Harmon

Henry? Spite? Naw... :P

Blaise Corvin

I was only confused about why he called Mr. Rogers by the wrong name. His name was Fred, not Bob. I didn't realize at first that Henry was doing it out of spite. At least, I assume he was...

Roy Harmon

Yeah I'm sorry guys. I got caught up with some stuff for work again. This has just been a terrible week for writing, unfortunately.

Blaise Corvin

also, i might be inebriated, and tired

Micah Rutledge

your mom is 40ish :)

Micah Rutledge

how confused were you? the only thing that would have beaten it over our heads more would have been sleeve tattoos, that necessitated a nice sweater.

Micah Rutledge

man its been a long 24hrs since you said you would post a chapter. feels like several days to me. But, im impatient.

Micah Rutledge

I just want to thank you for the throwback to my childhood. When I first heard Jeff Hays mention the cartoon cat, I didn't think much of it. But then I heard the voice, and I shouted to my otherwise empty car, "THAT'S EEK!" I was a little confused when Henry called Mr. Rogers "Bob," though. But I assumed he was making the point that he wasn't the real Mr. Rogers, whose name was Fred. Still, I was pretty excited about both of them. Thanks for that.

Roy Harmon

40ish

Blaise Corvin

How many chapter will there be in book 3 total?

Kurt A

Everything will get exponentially better when I can go full time with writing. Working 2 jobs is just slowly wearing me down.

Blaise Corvin

Sorry that situations haven't been the best for you lately. Hope things get better soon. 👍🏻😁

William Waggoner

Uhhhh... *pat pat* It's going to be okay

Blaise Corvin

The Terrible Thunderlizards were the best part of Eek! Stravaganza. Come at me!

Chris Britt

lol! Nobody here enrages me. If they did, I'd kick them. :P

Blaise Corvin

I may post stuff that enrages you sometimes, but im still here, afer all, i like delvers. ;)

Drake

Thanks for all the support guys. You are all awesome. I wish everyone could go to Dragoncon so we could all do shots and talk about geeky stuff.

Blaise Corvin

Take it easy, recharge the batteries and have some fun.

Joshua Little

TBH i am a bit surprised that you are not precharging. I think you should start right away, because it wont matter much for most folks. For the consistent people it will be no problem, for the inconsistent it might help them become consisted. For the assholes that abuse the system...... well you can do without them on the other hand since your books are addicting it might get them to stop abusing the system.

Lachezar

Thanks guys. All this stuff is new to me so I really, really value your input.

Blaise Corvin

Yes do that. It's only reasonable and fair. The author of The Wandering Inn switched to that structure and I'm not aware of any backlash.

Nick Ramsey

I thought about that, but I have some really, really generous patrons here. It really isn't about the money, it's just kind of a dick move to see people taking advantage of the system. I'd bet the people doing it aren't commenting, either.

Blaise Corvin

You could always change it to the way Tefler has it -- he moved to longer chapters and bills per chapter instead of per month. :)

Daniel Sifrit

I'm sure you know about 1000% more about it than me. I will bow to your superior knowledge and take your word for it.

Blaise Corvin

Prepaid is always a good idea. Patreon has an odd way of handling upgrades and payments. Well, having designed a similar system, it is pretty difficult to implement.

Jacob Santos

Oh yeah, absolutely. I still think it's amazing that anyone wants to read my work at all. The issue isn't with the amount of money, it's with the consistency. Once I go full time, I need to know how much I'm going to be making from month to month so I can appropriately budget. If Patreon fluctuates to some random number at the end of the month, it's harder to do that. Some other authors just suggested I use the option to precharge everyone if they first join. I won't be changing my pricing structure, just preventing people from popping in and out at will.

Blaise Corvin

Hey bro. That sucks. I hope you feel b better soon. Everyone gets sad sometimes, so don't get down on yourself for being down. As for the money issue; people come and go. I wouldn't take it too personally. I think your content to cost ratio is awesome for us readers. I personally upped my contribution as a thank you for all the hard work you've been putting in. And you still have the 15 to 20 for when the book and audio book get released coming from most of us.

Micah Rutledge

Thanks for the update! Looking forward to more delvers. And I agree that the schedule you've been maintaining is awesome. I know I will be here eagerly awaiting more for as long as you continue writing. 😁

Steven

Dude. I love your update schedule. I think it's amazing that you're maintaining it. Especially with depression spikes. Which suck balls.
