Age of the Hunter

On the windswept plains of the Eocene you might find a Hyaenodon surveying the undisturbed wilderness. Her life is a daily balance between brute force and meditative precision, all in service to the next generation.

This continues my Hyaenodon kick, which have stood out to me among the extinct Cenozoic mammals and I just wanna draw more of them... This is also the last piece I finished in 2023, finally uploaded! With all the unrefined sketching I've been doing since the beginning of the year, I wanted to post the finished stuff more slowly so I didn't end up with a huge gap between them. We'll see what good that even does me :P

What do you think -- more Hyaenodons? You got any other favorite ancient mammals?

Ooh, a challenge >:3 They're pretty cool, and their scales can apparently be found in Florida if you're lucky.

The beautiful sky is ambiguous whether it's morning or evening, making me think crepuscular hunting is preferred, I imagine it might get warm during the day. For a challenge, I propose trying a glyptodont at some point 😉.

Love that pose. Just seeing her back like that. The way she's looking back. Expecting something to happen. Getting her spear ready. That background too. Just *chef's kiss.* That's wonderful! Really captured that fading like feel.

Tygepc

Awesome, I really love color scheme of the background.

Oh! How could I have forgotten thylacoleo with their amazing scissor-teeth? Now, I'm sounding like a true dentition nerd.

Greg

True enough, they're undeniably cool ^^

Andrewsarchus is so badass! I might have to doodle a few of them...

Kalahari

They're pretty cool. Can't go wrong with smilodons either of course, of any of the variants :D

MountainGoat

This is fantastic as always. The background fits in really well with the lighting

Kiko

Hell yeah more hyaenodons. I love their huge sagital crests and big ol' chompers. Let's see her tearing into dinner! As for other loved ancient mammals, how about andrewsarchus?

Greg

The way the light from the clouds subtly color her body... gorgeous!
