I havent named him[?] yet. I wanted a unisex name because the sanctuary/rehab/shelter I adopted him from was "pretty sure" he's a boy but he's never been bred so there's no confirmation and he's a very young bird, still had baby pinfeathers on his head that I've been helping him open.
He finally WILLINGLY let me pet him today on his head, ears, cheeks, neck and back. as an adopted bird he will take some work to become my buddy but I'm absolutely in love with the little fella and I was getting too elated this morning when he ate his [snack mix] seeds from my hand. Don't worry he cant and doesnt eat the corn pieces or sunflower seeds in their shells, he eats all the other seeds. I've been winning him over with these and he's also got his pigeon grit and his healthy main food as well. When he gets a bit more tame I'll be getting him some pigeon pants to wear so he can hang out with me outside of his cage all the time.
also i've admittedly been spoiling him a lot. the bridges in his cage I made for him myself, I also created a nest out of a perfectly pigeon sized bowl but he kept knocking it over, so today I busted out the power tools and built a 1.5x1.5 girth frame about 5" in square shape to set the bowl in and now he cant tip it over. He's also got some balls and I feel kinda sad because his life so far he didn't know what toys were. so now he's been learning to toss his ball around and have 'fun' and it's wholesome ;~;
pigeons are VERY misunderstood birds and extremely extremely loving and clean, you can tell because my boys got pristine pink toes. they love grooming and bathing and are very smart and not at all 'sky rats'. as for diseases, well, common housecats carry far more than any bird. they're also very quiet and quite warm and wonderful to cuddle as their little bodies are 105F
anyway I'd been wanting one for 2 or 3 years now but my life wasn't so safe. I'm happy with my little guy and quite happy to spoil him absolutely rotten.
I can say, I HIGHLY recommend adopting a pigeon. they on avg live 15 years in captivity but can live up to 31 [the oldest one is currently 31] and there are SOOO many to choose from in adoption agencies and sanctuaries, so I highly recommend adopting, that's what I did! 8 hour round trip but the fella running this sanctuary was super kind and the adoption fee was a big bag of bird seed not actual $$. if you're looking for a good, quiet, affectionate and low maintenance birb: pigeons
