rainbow birch revisited

So here's that one dream-concept I sketched out several months ago. I came back to it because I have a lot of emotional attachment to it and it bothered me that I couldn't get it to look the way I wanted. I gave up during the sketch phase last time because I simply didn't have the understanding I have now, about iridescent hues. It's been kind of a bummer that I can't draw half as much as I would like to, but while I'm down for the count I am mainly studying and absorbing information so when I am able to apply it, I can do it better than before. I may do this for some of the other dream scenery too.

Anyway It's still a wip at this phase but it's the general direction I want to go in! I hope this was interesting haha.

to be honest, for this illustration I wanted the kind of dreamlike look that artists like rei_17 and awanqi @twitter tend to achieve so what I mostly gleaned was how they play neons/pastels against very muted colours to get that iridescent effect. I do however, study real life objects for a lot of the lighting and translucency techniques I like to employ. I've always been a bit of a magpie, i love shiny things hahah!!

Out of curiosity, how do you go about studying things like light and iridescence for art purposes? Do you find studying objects visually helps the most or does it help to have theoretical knowledge as well?
