2025-07-23 10:02:14 +0000 UTCSome cultural context to consider while watching: 1.) this starts in postwar 50s Korea and there's a lot of deep national trauma (there's widespread poverty, a clash between Confucian and modern/U.S. ideals, etc.), 2.) Jeju women have a reputation for being tough as nails (and haenyeo, or the female divers, are known to have the most difficult and undesirable job), 3.) patriarchy reigns supreme (even the most talented women rarely reach "success"--marrying up is basically the only option), and 4.) children belong to the father's family in Korea (at the time, girls took on the tasks of a second wife/mother). I hope y'all enjoy the series, but my fam and I found it overhyped and cliche (we're Korean). A lot of people talk about how great/emotional the show is, but you're allowed to not be feelin it!
