🍨🎮 Yumykon Games Devlog #005

Hi everyone! 💕

Sorry for delaying the devlog... I had some issues this week, and I didn’t have time to write.

Well, this week, we made little progress again because I had to deal with various health issues. I even had an exam where they stuck a huge needle in my neck, which left me feeling a bit down for a few days.

Anyway!

I think I’ve finished the first promotional art for the game—here’s how it turned out!

The idea behind this art is that it can be cropped and reused in various media, so it works as 16:9, 1:1, 2:3, 3:2, and even as a computer wallpaper.

It was supposed to be accompanied by the game’s logo, but let me tell you about the problem I had with that logo...

The Fiverr Scam

There’s a saying here in Brazil: ‘The cheap comes out expensive,’ which is basically karma for trying to save money by getting a cheap service and ending up paying more for something of poor quality.

I wanted a logo that had an anime vibe, mainly from shoujo or ecchi comedy with romance. But with a more modern look, because if you look at the logos of anime in this genre, they’re either just plain text with no styling, or the styling is very outdated.

I always thought that Vtuber logos had that anime logo vibe, but modern, stylized, etc.

So I knew I had to look for a freelancer who made Vtuber logos. However, for some reason, I ended up searching on Fiverr. I guess, unfortunately, I made an automatic decision because I worked for two years on Fiverr before I started posting art online. And my work there wasn’t mediocre, so I thought maybe I could find someone who had the same level of quality that I offered.

I looked for the Vtuber logo creator with the highest reputation on the site. The guy literally had 50,000 reviews with a almost 5-star rating. Top seller freelancer level. And the ad video they put on the gig was basically like this:

I was amazed by the quality of the logos. So I quickly placed an order.

But after paying and having the first direct contact with them, I had my first red flag. The responses I got from them gave me the feeling of answers generated by ChatGPT.

I let it slide, thinking that someone with 50,000 reviews has to optimize their time.

I specified in the brief how I wanted the logo, explained what the project was about, who I was, sent my website with information about the OCs and ref sheets—everything so that they could dive into and understand the project.

But... after that

They asked me for a reference logo and what percentage of similarity I’d like the reference logo to have with his work.

I thought it was a odd question but spent hours looking for a logo that I liked and that resembled what I was looking for. I sent them the Japanese horizontal version of the Netoge no Yome logo and said it could be around 33%:

Then, after that, without any further discussion, debate, WIP, or presentation of ideas or anything of the that, they spent about 2 hours without saying anything and then simply returned with the delivery of the order and sent me this logo:

Jeez... I don’t even know where to start. I had such a big disappointment that I think that’s when I lost the drive to continue with the order.

Before anything, I know that this Logo isn't 100% bad.

But the quality and expertise put into this logo don’t even come close to what was advertised. To what the ad made me believe.

And also, I sent a huge text talking about the logo, the project, and myself. They asks one weird question, and then right after, they sends the logo? No conversation, no discussion, no ideas presented, nothing???

And on top of that, the game’s name is wrong on the logo. They wrote ‘Yumykon’ instead of ‘Yumyverse!’

This was such an amateur and unprofessional logo and service that I think I gave up at that moment. But for some reason, I persisted because I wasn’t confident I could get my money back.

So I detailed the problems with the logo as if I were teaching them design and explaining what was wrong, etc.

At some point, in 20 minutes, I made a logo prototype in Photoshop. I sent it to them to explain a concept they could follow to develop the work.

Here is the logo concept I made:

And you won’t believe it...
After that... they sent me MY LOGO, but made it worse and added a few icons:

I basically started laughing to myself because I couldn’t believe I had paid someone to deliver the work to him and for him to copy it and make it worse.

So I said I couldn’t continue with the work and that I would initiate a dispute on Fiverr for cancellation and refund.

After some effort, I got the refund and decided that, at least for now, I’ll try to make the logo by myself based on the concept I made to send to him. Haha

By the way, what do you think of this prototype? I’d love to hear suggestions.

Besides all this, I made some progress on the story writing

I think I’m about 50% done at this point.

I’m having trouble imagining things in-game while writing the events; it’s a bit strange ~

That's it!

Thank you for reading, and I hope you all have a great week!!

With love, Yumykon. 💕
