I thought I should point out that Leif Erikson was very much a real life person. He's thought to be the first European to set foot on the Americas (around 500 years before Columbus). Though the anime is very much fictional and/or exaggerated, there are many real historical figures and events in it that really took place. For example, "Vinland" really was the name the real Leif Erikson gave to the area in North America around where Newfoundland is today. (So he wasn't lying).
