Weekly Digimon Comic: Digimon Tamers - page 29.5

I mean, yeah, I know it's a magical girl staple, and I do know that their armor gets more elaborate down the line, but still! You gotta admit it's a little weird, right?

Yeah, I've seen The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari before, but that was a looooooong time ago. And let's be honest here, it's not like this particular, extremely striking setting actually MEANS anything in the greater flow of the episode. They could have had just about any kind of backdrop for these scenes, and very little would need to change. I appreciate the creative visual flourish, I'm just saying that it doesn't give me much to work with over there.

I mean, I know Hikaru ACTS a lot younger than the other two, but the dialog in this episode makes it sound like she LOOKS like a grade schooler. Sure, she's SLIGHTLY shorter than the others... in certain shots, but she still has the same generally tall, lanky design of just about every other character. My brain just struggles with the implication that I'm supposed to be looking at the design of those one character and see someone who looks noticeably smaller than the others. It'd be like a...

I tried to keep all that vague enough to obscure my own lack of knowledge on the topic, and I am ABSOLUTELY sure I still got some details in that whole spiel wrong. See kids, this is what happened back when franchises had "multiverses" that weren't diagrammed out my committees years in advance. Even setting aside that must of us in the Western world never got to play the Wonderswan games that Ryo originates in, it seems pretty obvious to me that nobody was seriously thinking about making th...

As over-used as the trope could get, I do really miss the days when characters could and did turn into blobby, big-headed versions of themselves at a moment's notice. Not, like, in some bonus content or spin off or something, but right there in the actual anime. I'm sure it's still out there, but I feel like I don't see it anywhere near as much as in shows from Back In The Day™. As you may have noticed, my own art style has been slightly influenced by this trend.

Yeah, just as your latest reminder: even though I still use the dub versions of names where applicable (because those are the names I learned first), I am actually watching the subbed versions of these episodes for comic purposes. And while the dub does include some scattered references to the previous seasons of the show as something the characters watched (and that's not even getting into using Davis as the narrator), the Japanese version only seems to acknowledge the games as being "real,"...

Look, all I know is that I sat down to watch the first episode of Rayearth, and got hit with inspiration for more comic pages than I got from watching the entire first SEASON of Konosuba. Make of that what you will.
But seriously, both this week AND next week's comics are generic enough jokes that we won't "officially" start digging into episode one until week three. THAT'S how much this kind of show tickles my brain.

Preemptive hello to any diehard steampunk fans getting offended over this. I don't even dislike the whole steampunk thing, just how severely overplayed it got for a few years there. This'll be especially ironic in retrospect a few days later, when I finally get around to finishing this month's blog post. (Though you'll only get it if you're a more than $1 patron)

Look, I'm not even saying that I desperately WANT to know the amazing backstory of the fat guy getting robbed of a box of candy bars by Santa Claus and a pumpkin. I'm just saying that it's exactly the sort of gag I would have expected a series like Baccano to pull at some point. I mean, they bring back the immortal mouse for crying out loud. This was totally within the realm of possibility.
BUT YES! At long last, my romp through Baccano is officially over! And sta...

I will never EVER get tired of sniffing out and laughing at odd signs in anime backgrounds. This I vow.
But, believe it or not, this actually NOT the last Baccano page! I've actually been holding one last doodle in reserve for WEEKS now, just waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger on it. So come back this time next week for Baccano's grand finale!

Okay, I'm wading into unfamiliar waters again by trying to get some comics done early and queue them up to go live while I'm away at Otakon. HOPEFULLY you're seeing this when you're supposed to, but any time I do something out of my usual routine, I get all anxious and uncertain.
Anyway, yes, that's a real movie. And it's not just a "killer animals run amok" kind of movie either, it's actually post-apocalyptic. And yes, if it were up to me, Baccano would ABSOLUTELY end with all the i...

Sorry the art on this one is so rough... that is, even rougher than it usually is. I had to bash this comic out REALLY quickly due to Otakon preparations, so that wide shot in particular is a lot more... "impressionistic" than would usually be acceptable.
Also, it felt REEEAAALLY weird to write "Adult" instead of "Champion" for this comic, but the joke just works a whole lot better with the Japanese terminology than the English. I usually deffer to the dub where early Digimon...

Basically, what I'm saying here is 1. Midlife Crisis + 2. Short Man Syndrome = 3. Impmon.
...and that's not even the only motorcycle joke I got out of this episode.

See, if I take a step back and say how I DON'T say these things, then it's YOUR fault for bringing it up if you disagree! ...though, for the record, if they DID hook up, I'd probably say that Rachel could do way better than Claire/Vino/Felix/whatever. I guess the main point here is that I find her a lot more likable than Chané, so I wanted more stuff to happen with her.

AND WE HAVE A WINNER! A surprising one at that, if I'm honest. I was quietly hoping for Gundam to win, while bracing myself for K-On, so I'm a little blindsided that Rayearth wound up getting the nod. But this is what we're doing next!
Some quick bits of housekeeping: Obviously, there's still a BIT of Baccano left to go, so it'll be a few more weeks before the Rayearth comics actually start. Also, just a quick reminder that I'm only commi...

I tried to write this in a way that it could could be read as both ironic foreshadowing of later episodes of Tamers, and also as a snarky dig at Frontier... though as a result, I dunno if it actually wound up working as either.
By the way, though, I do like that someone took the time to draw Kazu and Kenta's made up Digimon alter-egos in sufficient detail that they really genuinely do look like "real" Digimon. I mean, they look way more like legit Digimon products tha...

Hey, man, if the end goal of our epic quest was going to be as underwhelming as it was, my extra stories are just gonna have to be about the drive there and back. I'm not going to tell you the story of T-Pose Jesus, though. You get to just imagine the context of that yourself (unless Stefan can ever get around to editing the video of the trip, I think the story gets told more fully there)

I really ought to be using this space to throw out some additional topical digs at online culture... but I'm too distracted by my only just now realizing that I drew Rika's hair in the shape of Tax from Far Out There without realizing it. Um... whoops?

Is this a subtle mockery of people who can't read as quickly as I do? Of course not, don't be silly... there's nothing subtle about it at all. (Also, yes; I know that Baccano has a better argument than most for being watched in the dub, what with the whole being set in America thing)
Anyway, this is officially your FINAL WARNING TO VOTE ON WHAT THE NEXT WEEKLY ANIME COMIC WILL BE! Yes, there's still a few more weeks of Baccano comics left to go, but I wanna make sure...

To reiterate what I said elsewhere, sorry for the sudden break in comics. Life is starting to at least SLIGHTLY calm down again, and I should hopefully be able to keep a regular weekly routine going for at least the next couple weeks (Otakon's already looming on the horizon, though, so we'll see...)
Also, I must confess that it's been so long since I actually read any Tolkien myself, I've got no idea if the "round doors" bit is even The Hobbit originally, or if it was just inv...

First off, sorry for the lapse in content recently. I had a nasty bout of Real Life that threw off all my productivity over the past few weeks, and I'm only just now starting to get back into something resembling a regular groove again.
But anyway, I'm sure there's some Graham superfans out there who will take offence to this, there always SOMEBODY who loves even the most garbage characters... but yeah, Graham is peak cringe. He's the self-insert OC that some fourteen year old makes up...

Watch this comic get some kind of fact checking community notice when it goes out to the wider social network. And this is the TAME version of this comic! When the idea first sprang up in my head, they were talking about stuff I don't even want to HINT at down here for fear of the comment section!
But anyway, just in case I haven't stressed it enough: this is NOT the end of the Baccano comics, not quite. I'm still going to go ahead and do pages on the three OVAs after this. That jus...

Yeah, I don't often accuse Tamers of having missteps beyond the most nitpicky little things, but this is one of the few full-on gripes I have. The version of the Digital World seen in this series is possibly the least engaging out of any Digimon series I've seen (including that disclaimer just in case Appmon is hiding some kind of astonishingly lame surprise in the later episodes that I haven't watched yet). Some shows, like Frontier or Savers, m...

Yeah, I know. I already talk about Digimon enough, do I REALLY have to start bringing it up in the comics I do about entirely different shows?
Yes. Yes I do.
And speaking about other shows, don't forget that a poll to pick the NEXT Weekly Anime Comic is live as we speak! Go help me pick what I'll start doing comics on once I finish with the Baccano OVAs!

It's funny. Like many people, I saw the Saban dub of Tamers first, and didn't get around to watching subs of the Japanese version until YEARS later. And yet, the second Tamers closing theme gives me a hit of nostalgia something fierce. Like, WAY more than any of the other Digimon songs (Even "Butterfly." Yeah, I said it.)
Granted, it helps that the song has such strong "2000s Closing Theme" energy in ...

Admittedly, I might be cheating by counting "Rail Chaser" as an actual name, but my admittedly limited research tells me he's Claire Stanfield and Vino AND Felix Walken at various points, so maybe doing a title card would have just made things MORE confusing, not less.
And yes, I realize he's not named in the intro because the audience is supposed to think he gets killed early on, and getting a shout-out during the intro would spoil the twist. Still, it feels weird that they STILL don'...
