2022-02-05 15:40:34 +0000 UTCfirst off, i'm so excited for you to dive into her other albums. they're so good. second, the thing to understand about Mitski nowadays (with this album and the last two Be The Cowboy and Puberty 2) is that she's got a love-hate relationship with her music career. on the one hand (at least from what i can interpret), she's grateful for the success she's gotten and for the connection she's made with fans through her art. on the other hand, she's a very private person who wants to hide from the public-facing parts of her career, whether it's doing media or interacting with her fans. she took a long hiatus from music after Be The Cowboy, and deactivated her twitter once she was done touring, and did not come back until the promo cycle for this new album. and even then, all her social media is handled by her manager -- she's completely checked out of it. and with her fans, there's this balance between "thank you for loving my music," and trying to gently mitigate the parasocial interactions from people who yell "i love you" at her shows. so with that in mind, the songs on Laurel Hell (especially "I Guess") make a hell of a lot more sense, and it leaves you wondering if she's going to keep doing music after this album cycle and her upcoming tour (hey, she's touring with Harry Styles this year!), or if she's really going to quit for good, and go back to being someone with a regular job. and personally, i hope she keeps making music, because she's so talented and her songs mean a lot to many people. but also, i understand her wanting to leave and just be unknown again. but maybe "That's Our Lamp" is an indication that she'll keep trying...? who knows.
