Windows Defender Quarantine

I just got reports of Windows Defender quarantining vamX.1.28.var. Virus protection programs often misidentify software as containing trojans. The file is then reported to the company as a false positive, and over time, they fix the issue.

We've scanned vamX.1.28.var with Avast, and it scans clean (and also nothing interesting has changed compared with previous version of vamX).

We've scanned vamX.1.28.var with VirusTotal, and it scans clean (see attached image or go to https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/d86343a4c05626dbcc59a8e9cc7d0314bfd310c53d3298452e7670c02c19f90e or try it yourself on virustotal.com)

I think it would help if other users scanned vamX.1.28 with their virus protection programs and posted the results here.

If you use Windows Defender, and get vamX flagged, please submit it to Microsoft for further analysis, or submit it as a false positive. This will help other users.

To restore vamX from quarantine, try: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/security/defender-endpoint/restore-quarantined-files-microsoft-defender-antivirus?view=o365-worldwide

Based on my prior experience with this with other software, this issue should resolve itself within a few days.

Also, maybe it's time to switch to a better free antivirus. As long as you are willing to ignore Avast or others attempts to get you to upgrade to paid, they are better options. "Microsoft Defender isn't bad these days, but it's still not enough to  fully protect your PC. You don't have to pay extra, though. We’ve tested  and ranked the top free antivirus apps." https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-free-antivirus-protection

There should have been a text doc loaded after update on your desktop with the latest key. When entered and accepted your content should reload. Sometimes a new Addon folder appears and the old one still exists. You can just transfer the content to the new Addon folder form the latest update. That worked for me.

I just updated to the latest version. I think it was VaM 1.20.77.8 and i updated to 1.22.0.1. but now I have lost creator and all of the scenes and addon things that I had downloaded from the hub. They are still on my computer but they dont show up in game.

What kind of performance issues (you can try to switch back to 1.27, just download 1.27 then move the vamX.1.28.var package to your Desktop or somewhere and restart Virt-a-Mate)

vamX

Has anyone else had performance issues with 1.28 or is it just me?

Boom Shakalaka

Please do submit it to Microsoft.

vamX

Are people still having this issue with it being flagged by Windows Defender?

vamX

Well since no one has answered. I haven't submitted to Microsoft, but telling defender to restore allowed me to go back to 1.28 and up to date again. I figured it may have been a false positive because I had the file installed before defender flagged it. Once defender flagged it , it removed the file from Vam and thus removing VamX 1.28. Restoring fixed and computer isn't infected so yes its a false positive.

These aren't dependencies, these are files inside the var package. We've scanned vamX.1.28.var with Avast, and it scans clean (and also nothing interesting has changed compared with previous version of vamX). We've scanned vamX.1.28.var with VirusTotal, and it scans clean (see attached image or go to https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/d86343a4c05626dbcc59a8e9cc7d0314bfd310c53d3298452e7670c02c19f90e or try it yourself on virustotal.com)

vamX

Has anyone submitted the file to Microsoft for analysis?

vamX

I've done this https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/d86343a4c05626dbcc59a8e9cc7d0314bfd310c53d3298452e7670c02c19f90e (and scans as clean) but if a user would paste in their results from virustotal that would be great.

vamX

What did you scan with Windows Defender? Because Windows Defender is giving a false positive. See virus total's analysis: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/d86343a4c05626dbcc59a8e9cc7d0314bfd310c53d3298452e7670c02c19f90e

strongly recommend scanning files you suspect on virustotal. It uses a ton of scanners to validate it. www.virustotal.com

Please scan with more than just one AV. The smaller companies don't have the staff to keep them up to date every day.

How can we be sure it’s a false positive though, and not a Trojan that has creeped into one of your dependencies?

Ants

Yeah, found this out last night. It took awhile to figure out why the file kept going missing every time I copied it from my backups to Vam.

Weaver

Hey, I just scanned and got a positive. Trojan: Win32/Casdet!rfn
