Yeah, it was unfortunate that you missed the bit where he said he had been done for interfering with dogs but got off with it coz as soon as he started his fire presentation the jokes & jibes about dogs started around the room & then his drawing of a dog to really top off the joke.

2025-09-28 22:49:22 +0000 UTCJust been listening to Neil Fitzmaurice 'RayVon''Jeff' talk about how he came up with and wrote Clinton Baptiste - Derek Acora was doing some gigs out in Dubai and came out to a packed audience, smoke machine with big intro then squeeked out his 'alright' then proceeded to insult people, insinuate they had cancer or have a car crash and walk away to the next. So even though Neil didn't play him, he wrote him and ok'd Alex Lowe (who did play Clinton)to take it out on the road as a very successful comedy act. The name Clinton Baptiste comes from a big Glaswegian bruiser Neil knew that did an Elvis Presley act under that name. I think Neil would get a kick out of this channel but I can't find his contact.

You started to pick up on it towards the end. Not easy at times as the scenes jump back and forth and you sometimes need to go back a little further after commenting. Anyway there were still loads of laughs to be had and many more episodes to come. Thanks for the reaction. Glad you’re still enjoying it.

I don’t agree with some comments that it was irritating but it’s so fast and we want you guys to enjoy it, so although it might be a 24 minute show we wouldn’t mind a 1 hour reaction!! ❤️

You've got to be on the ball with the dialogue in this show, while you're laughing/thinking about a funny line, the next one hits straight away and it can be easily missed. 'Keth Lard' appears in the Bingo Club episode in the prequel series to this - 'That Peter Kay Thing'. 7 stand-alone episodes including the pilot. Peter Kay plays 15 characters in all. Well worth a watch in the future after the 'Max and Paddy' spin-off if you do it.

It’s no biggie but I do agree that they should watch it again on their own, especially the part at Den Perry’s club at the beginning. If they hear what Brian’s saying as he’s looking at the poster and what the audience is shouting out, everything should then click into place. Jess picked up on it later during the aerobics session, but there’d already been about 100 dog jokes by then! 🤣 When I realised they missed it the first time, I was like “nooooooo” 😭 Phoenix Nights is on of those shows though. Almost every line of dialogue is a joke and I still pick up on new things now, even though I’ve watched it a hundred times!!

2025-09-27 13:09:21 +0000 UTCLove Phoenix Nights but this is definitely my least favourite episode, I think some of the jokes about real events where real people burned to death are kinda poor taste, and the "character" Keith Laird is really not a good look for Peter Kay. There was a real life fire safety officer named Keith Laird that worked in the Bolton/Chorley area at the time, I don't know too much about the exact details but I'd assume that Laird prevented one of Kay's shows in the past perhaps, in the very least he must've ticked Kay off pretty bad for Kay to use his platform to slander a person so badly. Channel Four had to add a disclaimer after the end credits stating that the character is fictional and any similarities to real life people or events are coincidence, they also had to add an apology to Mr Laird and his family for any humiliation and distress caused.

Peter Kay has said the character of Keith Lard was purely fictional but, I think it’s widely accepted it was based on Keith Laird. With regards to the Keith Lard character, Peter Kaye was actually sued because he based the character on a real life fire safety inspector by the name of Keith Laird. Due to this, they actually had to put a disclaimer on this episode, stating that the Lard character was in no way associated with Laird.
