Only Fools and Horses - S1E7 'Christmas Crackers'

Comments

Deep fried turkey like in a pan of oil deep fried 😱 that's the worst thing I've ever heard course it was raw on the inside

Grah Brier

I think the YouTube comments have given away practically every major plot point of the show.

Keith Pratt

would be so good if yous reacted to gavin and stacey!

Lewzih

Had to catch up on these after you put the first ep on yt,so glad you're enjoying it, maybe classic episodes to come, also if you're ready liking Rodney, you should watch another sitcom of his called goodnight sweetheart 👍

DaveyB

'Enemy' is just tongue in cheek for wife. Cockney rhyming slang is 'trouble and strife'.

Emmanuel Martin

del is referring to the england football team

Lewzih

Enemy is just a term of "endearment"😀. Not rhyming slang.

Craig

Where’s the next episode at

Taylor Thomas

If you like him King Boomer has done the entirety of Only Fools and Horses and he loved it

Arthur Goonie

November 5th?! What! Please don’t make me wait that long for another reaction…. Pleeeeeeease

Keiran Cottington

The “enemy” was painful 😂😂

Stuart Hepden

On YouTube, the comic relief proformamce is the theme tune opening. It would be good to get a reaction to this.

The Watcher

Mike, your mission by the end of season 2 is to learn all of the intro lyrics to the proper theme. Jess, your mission is the same with the outro. Do you accept these missions? 🫡🤣

Mark E

They're watching the original broadcasts, so it must have been in there from the start.

Keith Pratt

I’m here for the fools and horses reaction as I love to watch you both as an added bonus for this great show, the series keeps getting better and this is always voted number one in comedy series in the U.K. hopefully you guys will come to be like all of us in the U.K. when we couldn’t wait for the next episode/series and especially the Christmas specials, you have great things to come, and two a week would be all the better.

Chris Harper

I wonder if 'Christmas Wrapping' by The Waitresses playing in the background in the nightclub scene would have been added in afterwards in later years? Cause when this episode first aired just after Christmas 1981, that was still a very very new song that hadn't really got out of the underground yet, it wouldn't chart in the UK till the next Christmas in 1982. That's the kind of stuff my pop music nerd mind goes to!

Flemish Giant

Can't believe there ditching this for some of that other cra....stuff! Two a week please!

Nix001

Wish we got couple a week

michael patch

And yes Mike you looked like French and Delboy would say "Crème de la Menthe" 😆😂

Josip Buretić

Del Boy says "fiver" in the "Christmas Trees" short they did.

Keith Pratt

Trouble and strife is wife, so you got close!

Tonia Laws

Glad to hear it my friend!

RegenerationNationTV

The stressful week is behind me and no I just want enjoy in your reaction

Josip Buretić

Definitely. I thought that intro was only on Series 1 episode 1.

james mcloughlin

Trouble and strife is wife, I think.

Alexander Munro

I take it enemy as ex wife.

Alexander Munro

"Put in your mouth and think of England" is a deliberate play on the much ruder expression "Lie back and think of England" being a euphemism for wives who weren't really into sex but let their husbands do it anyone.

Ronnie Cassinello

The last time we will hear that awful intro, november 5th - bring on the proper intro and outro 🙌🎉 He said the enemy just as a joke instead of saying the wife, wasnt using cockney rhyming slang

Mark E

You both look like you're ready for a British Christmas dinner. The paper crowns are perfect!

Alexander Munro

Lmao every Christmas my mum gets pissed at my little brothers and forces them to wear the hats lol

zStarr

Spoiler police required for forensic analysis. Suspect attempted a cryptic drive-by and made a getaway. They mentioned the war and they think they got away with it.

Julian

The first series was just a taster. It just gets better and better. There are some truly cracking episodes in Series 2 and then more fireworks in 3. By the end of 3, I think the depth of the characters was formed. Can't wait to see your reactions.

David Bingham

There's a brilliant anecdote from when Noddy Holder (of 70's group Slade) was in the costume department ready to film 70's-based TV show The Grimleys. Being from Birmingham, and the accent they have, when someone was going through suggestions for clothing they said "Would you like a kipper tie?" and his response was "Brilliant yes, 2 sugars."

Ian Warren

I think Jess did a fantastic job of the Christmas Cracker crowns. I rate Jess's work a 10/10, which is also my rating of how daft Mike looks wearing it. But we Brits do it every year and feel equally daft! I understand why you don't have crackers in the US, I should imagine every time someone pulled a cracker in a bar or restaurant everyone would duck under the tables in self defense mode. Love your reactions guys, best of the all reactors.

Ian Warren

Daniel Wickings

Aye 9/10 for lookin daft mike but a do give yous both 10/10 for the cut up boxers shorts jess cut up for Ali G’s hats though!🤣

Theloyalmuppet

The paper crowns are ridiculous for everybody. Everyone moans about them and yet mostly everyone will end up wearing one. Then for the rest of your Christmas lunch, you have to keep pushing the bloody thing back up off your face 😂

Emily

Honestly the best reactors ever! Never get tired of watching you guys and you always provide interesting perspectives that I never thought of before 🙏

Joseph Potter

Excellent as always guys, Mike you look dapper mate it suits you, your a 0 but in your mind 10 lol, good job on the crowns Jess. The rotation is much better as well more of a variety that way

Central Hub

Damn, you guys don’t have crackers over there?! Disappointing.

Karl

Sorry if already mentioned but you'll hear "score" a lot - it means twenty quid. "monkey" is 500 quid...."bluey" is a fiver but I don't recall if that's local to me or features on the show

na plz

Christmas for us is definitely like thanksgiving and Christmas combined

Kieran B

Vin Ordinaire of course is table wine, always enjoyed this episode - watch it pretty much every Christmas

Kieran B

Cockney rhyming slang for wife is "Trouble" >"Trouble & strife"

Scratchproof

Glad you went for my Christmas crown suggestion 😂

Kieran B

I was born Christmas day 45 yrs ago lol

Col Boro

I don’t like it, but I only watched it back in the day a couple of times and i love Richard ayaode so I will give it another try probably enjoy it with these two

Col Boro

What a wallybrain.

Craig Penman

Fine sentiment, mate, and I know you're excited. But can't we just let them watch it themselves and see what happens like a lot of us did on first broadcast?

Si

Proper bo 👌

Isthereany1herecalledJohn?

other terms for wife include - the handbrake, which always tickled me, esp when accompanied by the handbrake gesture and noise. The yacht laugh from Jess, i heard a snipping sound and Mike's nuts landing on the floor. Brutal, Jess, brutal.

emu cat

I think you're safe, col

emu cat

Spoiler alert? Not really a question just a seriously?! Why would you?

SomeBSName

Cant watch it without the proper intro music

Chris Wayman

Andy

They've been watching UK Comedy for ages and get stuff like Phoenix Nights (which is so Northern and goes over a lot of American's heads). They're well versed but just didn't know that 1 phrase hahaha.

Patrick Nicholls

done in front of a live audience. superb

jamestoni

A lot of people had never heard this theme tune. It’s asking a lot for nobody to mention it. It’s been talked about non stop since episode 1.

Julian

It’s only because people panic when something is a day late. It’s on a break now though.

Julian

My appreciation for season 1 has actually increased after rewatching it.

Julian

I think it would've been great if they hadn't known about the theme tune change. It would've made for a much better reaction when they heard it for the first time, IMO.

Keith Pratt

Enemy is just meaning wife, she's the enemy because they're always fighting. It's not cockney rhyming slang

Ben Richards

The bigger ties of the 70s were called Kipper Ties.

Karina Bailey

It's the most heartwarming show because as each series progresses it gets funnier, the characters and their close friends Trigger Boycies relationships with the 3 are developed and become part of the main show and even bigger family , there's break ups, family ups and downs growing older, moving out, moving back in, schemes relationships sad times happy times and massive issues tackled that make you cry and then laugh in the same moment. Genius show. Series 1-3 though are just standalone episodes. Series 4 and 5 6 7 and the Christmas Special is where it becomes the number 1 show ever. Love watching yous reacting to it. Wholesome family comedy institution!

Gerard McCartan

The enemy is a slightly derogatory but humorous way of describing your wife. Here in the UK we use a lot of self-deprecating humour and like to “take the piss”. There’s a lot of that type of banter in Only fools. I know you’ll get to learn the humour and appreciate it the more you see and hear it.

John Farnall

Great job on the Xmas hats Jess. Awesome 😁

Bikeaholic

omg i look forward to series 2 episode 1 just to be rid of that hideous theme music, it hurts my soul so bad because the actual theme is so legendarily great, oh and by the way guys just incase you didnt no, the new theme music also includes new OUTRO music, so dont forget to listen to the outro in full also on episode 1 of season 2 :D

Ricky

Your crafty Jess - you can make them, you can normally get them on Amazon - but you are USA so who knows x

sadie penman

I enjoyed this more than I thought, but still I'm glad it's out of the way, as I think it's one of the weaker ones. Roll on series two where the quality lifts.

ElvisLee

Yayyy these had stopped for show rotation. But such a nice surprise to see this today

Mark Rudd

That's alright, we'll have it to look forward to.

Keith Pratt

You just look like a british person at xmas, Im very honoured you wore Mike 😊

James Welsh

You look too cool for skool Mike.

Nathalie Grainger Bradbury

series 1 gets too much hate.

DarkBlondeWatch

The wife as "the enemy" because that's how a lot of marriages are. 😂

Fandom Crusader

I'm a bit gutted your taking such a big break until you watch series 2 Its quite a long show, as far as UK standards go It'll take you forever to get to the end with gaps like that

Nickthegamingnerd

Everyone looks silly in the Christmas hats, that’s the point! It’s great to look at photos of years ago and see long gone relatives looking ridiculous at the dinner table. 😍

Sean Amor

Can't wait until next week, they will absolutely love Mos and Reynholm

Sean Riley

Now I'm looking for it where it's not even there 😅 Thanks Josh. Jess really does do a great job with everything she does. Glad you enjoyed it

RegenerationNationTV

Table wine in French is vin ordinaire

Anthony Skelton

Nov 5th is Bonfire night in England so easy for us to remember and i will look forward too it if i don’t get banned, which is a possibility with my mouth not connected to my brain sometimes peace and love

Col Boro

Hats are awesome always love the outfits jess is a genius you M M M MAKE ME HAPPY

Col Boro

Great watching these with you two fine people. Gonna miss this show until it's back.

James Forrest

Definitely NOT Queen Victoria. She would never have said anything like that. The common attribution is to a Lady Hillingdon in 1912. Her advice to women on their wedding night “Close one’s eyes and think of England”.

Paul Godwin

Its switching with would I lie to you.

Josh Read

Off top of me head... Men Behaving Badly Open all Hours Last of the Summer Wine Keeping Up Appearances Rising Damp Till Death Us Do Part All a one man writing band. Okay, 3 of them were by the same man... but still 🙂

Si

One of the many incredible things about Only Fools is that unlike basically every other sitcom ever made, every episode is penned by one man. John Sullivan.

Menty

happy/merry Christmas 😆 , on the real , them hats looks great :P just like the real thing hehe good riddance to that game show theme tune xD

TheHigh

Mike and Jess, get set for Series 2, new intro and outro themes, with lyrics, and the episodes go up a notch.

Fordy7169

Mike, you would look the part with goldy/yellowy or green paper crown, particularly if you're wearing a red top . Got to colour co-ordinate if you're going to match Del Boy.

Fordy7169

The slang term 'enemy' for 'wife' is not London Cockney rhyming slang, it is a general British slang word not particular to London. The Cockney rhyming slang is 'trouble' as in 'trouble and strife' which can probably describe a few marriages. Others commonly used for wife around London are 'ball and chain' and 'er indoors.

Fordy7169

“The enemy at home” the wife

SimonNZ

It’s ironic that you mentioned about things you’ve watched about ww2 and Del saying “put it in your mouth and think of England” as it was David Jason’s real life brother in a documentary you watched that said about telling his baby brother about the ‘chicken’ that landed on their roof that was actually part of a woman that had been blown up

Carly

Were assuming Mike and Jess were not talking euphemisms regarding watercraft 🤣

Grown Up North

I always felt like this episode was a bit of a turning point with Del’s character where we saw his softer side. Up until this episode he’s quite brash and harsh and whilst he can still have those traits later on, he is a genuinely caring, family man. And I love how we see that here ❤️

Kate Hepplewhite

Season 2 is when Only Fools really hits its stride.

Jonoridge

IT Crowd is a very different style of comedy - but it's also a really excellent show and unlike any of the other shows you've done so far.

Tim

So glad you enjoyed the first season of “Only Fools and Horses,” as it only gets better and more funnier from season 2 onwards, with new characters being introduced (slowly at first) who would go on to be fan favourites. This helped the writer, John Sullivan, broaden his scope for stories that didn’t just centre around the three leads, making the show a more ensemble piece of comedy TV. Hard to believe how this show, by the time it was near the end of its run, had already become so loved by almost everyone in the UK. But it didn’t start out that way. The viewing figures for the whole first series, averaged around 7 million (which were considered mediocre by BBC comedy standards) and it generally received a lukewarm response from TV critics. However, the BBC gave it another chance and commissioned a second series from John Sullivan for 1982. The second series fared little better and the show was close to being cancelled altogether. What saved it was repeating both the first and second series in a more low-key time slot, which attracted better, more respectable viewing figures in June 1983, that convinced the BBC to commission a third series. From there, the show started to gradually built up a cult following, and started to top the television ratings. Series four followed and that saw viewing figures double those of Series 1. After that, the show was off and running and never looked back!

Andrew Roberts

Trouble and Strife is the Cockney rhyming slang for wife

Col

Please tell me Taskmaster isnt on hold!? Been looking forward to u watching season 2 😌😌

Simon Charlie

That was a nice surprise. Thought OFAH was finished for season 1 but forgot about the Xmas special. What a plonker 😂

Col

Fake news. Sad.

Jeffrey44

xmas cracker friends

mark

Wow. Never had a clue that it wasn't Nicholas singing the theme tune. Thank you guys. 👍

South Coast Rich

Enemy not cockney rhyming slang . Usually" trouble and strife "

John Rivenell

Trouble and strife is Wife

David Marriott-Hallam

Kids these days will never know that feeling of being bored like Rodney. I kind of miss it in a way haha.

Spencer Chou

Excited for s2!

AWR93

IT crowds quality, I don't care what anybody says, you won't convince me otherwise. There's some bang average what your mum likes stuff that's been suggested and IT definitely goes over my mums head

Christian Rolfe

Surely you ain’t swapping this for the poxy IT crowd they ain’t even in the same league CHEEESSEEE BURRGGERRR

Dan

Hats are Christmas perfection! Well done Jess!

Kaye G

I used to think it was Rodney, it's John Sullivan though, I think I Googled it once

Christian Rolfe

I'm so excited for the IT Crowd, my favourite comedy show 🤩

Kaye G

The phrase "Think of England", basically, just means: " just do it and don't think too hard about what it is you're doing." It's something you're expected to do, even if you don't really want to. I'm Scottish, though, so could be wrong on that.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

I think from Series 2 onwards the new theme tune kicks in featuring Rodney, (Nicholas Lyndhurst), singing ! Also, new characters feature and the return of Trigger etc, and also more scenes in the pub, (The Nags Head), as well as scenes shot out on location. These aspects made the show even better in my opinion. 👍

South Coast Rich

Your Christmas hat doubles up as an eye mask for your post dinner nap.

Nick Davis

Looks pukka!

David Bingham

Think of England originated with Queen Victoria, when she encouraged the womenfolk to welcome back their men from war. The men would obviously want to have sex with their wives whom they had not seen for some time, so Queen Victoria asked the women to "lie back and think of England" as a service to the men protecting their country. If one considers love is a battlefield, then the wife is the 'enemy'

John Laverty

The enemy is just a jokey assumption that your always you vs the wife

Christian Rolfe

The whole point of the crowns is to look stupid. If you look cool, you're doing it wrong.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Calling the blokes wife 'the enemy ' is just a jokey derogatory term, it's not rhyming slang.

Simon Cross

P.s. awesome hats. Nailed it.

Michael

Good move with the show rotation guys. Every show picked so far is exceptional. And taking them in moderation rather than smashing the lot allows experience of everything. You've picked great shows due to the quality of the people on the channel and it caters to everyone - long may it continue. 👌

Michael

Christmas Day 44 years ago. Who remembers it?

Julian

"Enemy" isn't cockney rhyming slang. It justt means "enemy" as slang for your wife cos husbands and wives sometimes fight.cocney rhyming slang for wife is "trouble and strife"

Kourga

The full 10 out of 10 Mike 😂

David Marriott-Hallam

Slightly stupid with the Christmas hat.....but it's the look of every British person eating Christmas dinner!! Nailed it! 👏🎄......and you won't miss the intro music, you'll LOVE the proper theme tune!!

Matt Harwood

Great, appropriate headgear. Congratulations. 😂🤗👏👏

South Coast Rich

Completely agree. Especially given there is a marked improvement in the quality of OFAH from series 2 onwards. Generally what Mike and Jess do is complete a season of a show then rotate to another show for a season of that then swap back so hopefully that's what they're doing with OFAH as they do with Still Game. Agree that it'd be preferable to rotate it with something better than IT Crowd if that is what they're swapping to, I had thought it was going to be Extras they did in between as that's what was uploaded yesterday in place of the usual OFAH slot.

Craig

'The enemy ' isn't rhyming slang.. its just a joke 😃

Sarah Radders

Couple of points. "Have a butchers out there" means "have a look out there". It's Cockney rhyming slang - butcher's hook = look. Think of England - yes, this comes from the WW2. It is used nowadays as a lighthearted saying when you have to do something you don't really want to do. It probably was literal during the war, but not now. It is often associated with sex (female). Woman says to friend "I'm really not attracted to paul, but he does have a Mercedes and he's promised to take me to his villa in the south of France". Friend replies, "Well, if you want the money, holidays and prestige, you'll have to sleep with him. Just lay back and think of England".

JEFF!?!

Not going to lie, dropping this for IT Crowd is a massive L in my opinion, I love the channel and the content but I will really miss these uploads every week, been enjoying rewatching this show. Again not hating just saying :)

Alex Britton

You look like a mighty king proudly sat next to his beautiful queen 🤗 You don't look ridiculous Mike, you look like everyone in the UK on Christmas day 🙂 Jess you have done a very good job on them 👏 The enemy isn't rhyming slang for wife. Its just a joke. The actual rhyming slang for wife is trouble and strife

Josh Read

You’re not wearing a paper crown until it rips at the back and is one last tear from splitting

Josef Hammond

Here are a few pieces of non-spoilery trivia about this episode from IMDb: This was the first episode to run over 30 minutes. The Production Manager, Jo Austin, was so unfamiliar with Cockney rhyming slang that she thought the actors were misreading the script in rehearsals. Del gets a French saying correct. When Rodney pours his wine, Del says "Merci."
