I’ve been watching your YouTube channel for a few months - only just worked out you have a Patreon. Nice! 👍🏻 If you like this, have a listen to their album ‘Rum Sodomy & the Lash’. It’s fantastic. And not forgetting their song ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’, which is just utterly perfect (plus Nick Cave’s version at Shane’s funeral will leave you in bits). Love you reactions, keep it all up 🙂👍🏻

2025-07-05 23:07:57 +0000 UTCMaking you aware of this fact Mike and Jess. In the UK you can go to a supermarket and buy Mr Brains Faggots. Mr Brains Faggots have also been advertised on TV. You can also buy a faggot at many fish and chip shops. A faggot has been a traditionally sold UK food product for a very long time. It blows my mind that this word is a very severe slur against gay people in this day and age… But I can still pop down to the shop and pick up a bunch of Faggots for my nightly dinner.

2025-07-05 15:48:06 +0000 UTCI loved this song when it came out but I've heard it so many times since that it's started to become annoying to me. However, your reaction has brought it back afresh.

2025-07-05 13:47:25 +0000 UTCAdore this song. Definitely my favourite Christmas song. It's heard by the average Brit approximately 14 times a day every day from 1st to 31st December. Iconic. 😎

2025-07-05 13:10:55 +0000 UTCThis is nonsense. MacGowan himself said "The word was used by the character because it fitted with the way she would speak and with her character. She is not supposed to be a nice person, or even a wholesome person. She is a woman of a certain generation at a certain time in history and she is down on her luck and desperate. Her dialogue is as accurate as I could make it but she is not intended to offend! " So why are you trying to bowdlerise it? It is what it is; deal with it.

2025-07-05 12:09:55 +0000 UTCI think so many people travelled to the US from Ireland, especially New York, and the influx of Irish into the UK as well, the song hits a bit different over here, maybe, but it’s definitely the best Christmas song by a country mile, Christmas is that kind of melancholy period as well no? You think of people not there? Decisions made or not made? Time of reflection? also with it being so close to Hogmanay which used to be a big thing over here, especially in Scotland… but tragic end for Kirsty MacColl what a voice, RiP 💔, & Shane of course… never forgotten with that song…. anyway Merry Christmas everyone! 🎅🏻🎄😂😂🫶🏻

2025-07-05 10:49:09 +0000 UTCAs my favourite song OF ALL TIME, it's a delight to hear it in July! People always say it's 'overplayed', but that's rubbish. I haven't heard it played on the radio, since, well, not this year.

2025-07-05 09:33:14 +0000 UTCGreat song and reaction guys. Kirsty MacColl was brilliant and sadly died a tragic untimely death for which justice was never really attained. Her Dad, Ewan, was also a talented poet and songwriter. You may have heard of one of the songs he wrote: 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'

2025-07-05 08:53:43 +0000 UTCI’m sure subscribers would love to see Jess’s reaction to Kirsty MacColl performing ‘There’s a Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis’, which was a hit in 1981. Great record, fun lyrics. I feel pretty certain it will become Jess’s new favourite song. https://youtu.be/_PPMyXoH1pE?si=FluYrlG34Cvw5QTT

2025-07-05 08:52:04 +0000 UTCGod I miss Kirsty - she was so brilliant, and had many solo hits of her own. Her death was so tragic I can't bear thinking about it. RIP to Shane too obviously, but I was surprised he lasted as long as he did, given his lifestyle.

2025-07-05 08:26:18 +0000 UTCThe line "you scumbag you maggot you cheap lousy faggot" gets all the soft people crying you can't say that, but 100% if your fella was in the drunk tank on Christmas day you would say a lot worse. Fairy's need to grow up.

2025-07-05 08:26:10 +0000 UTCI'm actually from Galway in the west of Ireland, the place that the boys from the NYPD choir were singing about! Great reaction guys, love the Christmas jumpers!

2025-07-05 08:22:23 +0000 UTCThere's a really heartwarming video of Shane's funeral, I believe a live band play this song, and the mourners start dancing. Worth a look.

2025-07-05 08:18:46 +0000 UTCOne was from Turkey, one was from Stoke, Several of the band were from Dublin. Not sure where you've got that from.

2025-07-05 08:16:40 +0000 UTCI love this song and how it came about, Shane McGowan was talking to singer/songwriiter Elvis Costello and was complaining that all catchy Christmas songs were "cheesy". Elvis bet him that he couldn't write a catchy Christmas song that wasn't cheesy because it can't be done. Shane wrote this, Elvis admitted the best was lost. It's a great song made so much better for the addition of Kirsty who wasn't a member of The Pogues. RIP to both Kirsty, who we lost so many years ago now and to Shane who we lost more recently
Neil
2025-07-05 08:08:29 +0000 UTCThe song may have been an unusual choice for this time of year, but I love how you two dealt with the result of the Music Poll and made a very original reaction video! Superb! xxx

2025-07-05 07:54:07 +0000 UTCMy friend was at Westminster School with Shane, and was absolutely terrified of him. We used to see him at punk gigs around London a few years after they had both left the school and my mate would do his best not to make eye contact with Shane. I didn’t know him but always thought he was just like so many other London lads back then, and punk gigs were always a riot anyway.

2025-07-05 07:30:18 +0000 UTCR.I.P Shane MacGowan. Always made me laugh when I found out he'd been bright and academically gifted enough to pass for a scholarship at Westminster School adjacent to Westminster Abbey, (not to mention the fees his parents must've paid) only to be thrown out permanently for selling drugs 🤣 He was born on Christmas Day, so it's fitting he wrote a Christmas song. R.I.P Kirsty MacColl too 😔

2025-07-05 07:19:22 +0000 UTCIt’s hard to believe that it is 25 years since Kirsty MacColl sacrificed her life in the act of saving her son. She was such a brilliant singer and had so many great songs of her own. Ironically, arguably The Pogues’ second most famous song, Dirty Old Town, was written many years earlier by her father, Ewan, about his home town Salford, Manchester. Ewan also wrote a very famous song, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, later a massive hit for Roberta Flack.

2025-07-05 06:54:33 +0000 UTCDear Kirsty 💔 Saved her child’s life by sacrificing her own. I personally loved a bit of Christmas in July 🤣 a song guaranteed to get anyone in the UK feral 😅

2025-07-05 06:43:06 +0000 UTCWhat a classic. 🔥 I'd say the reason this song didn't really cross over is because of pub culture which isn't a thing over there. Music is a big part of pub culture and in the run up to Christmas you'll always hear Fairytale Of New York in pubs and lots of people will sing along.
