2025-08-29 09:35:26 +0000 UTC"This doesn't make sense..." - It does make sense... Basil is a perfectionist, he wants to show his friends that he is in marital bliss and that he is living the dream, for Cybil to leave put Basil in the neurotic hot spot, he'll do anything to prove otherwise, which cause all the comedic commotion.

2025-08-08 21:27:07 +0000 UTCIt's a bit silly to apply critical thinking to the plotline as of course they are all contrived and anyway you could just as easily think of answers as to why Basil, being Basil, would pretend she was upstairs instead of admitting she had stormed off,

2025-07-23 03:04:15 +0000 UTCThis and Waldorf Salad are literally my two favourite episodes.

2025-07-06 20:04:24 +0000 UTCI'm surprised to see so many people don't rate this episode highly. It's quite possibly my favourite episode from across both series.

2025-07-06 20:03:44 +0000 UTCRoger is by far my favourite one off character from the entire series. He's such a unique invention for a sitcom, as he's essentially a member of the audience, having walked on set. He sees right through Basil's BS and delights in laughing at his crazy antics.

2025-07-06 20:02:29 +0000 UTCI seem to be in the minority but I love this episode ! What makes it for me is that Roger knows something’s not right and Basil knows that Roger knows :D Such clever writing and acting. (Whenever I’m at a gathering and people say “Cheers”, I always say “Up yours Basil” instead).

2025-07-05 22:01:36 +0000 UTCCouldn't agree more. Basil the Rat is brilliant.

2025-07-05 00:39:52 +0000 UTCWorst episode. The last one is GOLD.

2025-07-04 23:31:54 +0000 UTCThis and Waldorf Salad are both considered the weakest episodes. And funny enough both involved overly unbelievable farces. Plus both have a reduced support cast, as Manuel is barely in this either

2025-07-04 20:32:16 +0000 UTCI agree with most comments here it’s not the best episode but it’s good for the cringe factor. Basically the jist is, he’s in too deep, if he’d had more time to think about it initially he would have been ok but he was trapped as soon as he said she was ill, so he had to go with it, British values possibly a sign of the times I don’t know, you wouldn’t want to be seen to lie especially to your closest friends, so ultimately he had to stick with it and that’s the comedy there. Yes nowadays we would probably come clean but to me, if feels like it was more taboo at the time to just lie and then try and cover it up and then say something different. Still genuinely brilliant writing in my opinion

2025-07-04 18:16:29 +0000 UTCThey all veer in the unbelievable to a lesser or greater extent, but personally I am willing to give it a pass for demonstrating for the first time that there is genuine love between Basil and Sybil, as tragic as that love might be.
OrdinaryDave
2025-07-04 17:56:33 +0000 UTCI get that it's even more ridiculous than usual, but personally I rather like it for the very reason typically astute Jess touched on: that it is the first and only (?) time that Basil demonstrates his love for Sybil, while also sad that of course his pride makes it almost inevitable that he'll fuck it up.
OrdinaryDave
2025-07-04 17:53:11 +0000 UTCThe final episode Basil the Rat almost didn't get made. Due to BBC strikes IIRC. It was made of course but aired much later than the rest of series 2.
Nick Beer
2025-07-04 17:29:59 +0000 UTCAnd he wasn't even meant to be in it. I think recording of this episode was delayed due to a BBC strike and the original actor could no longer perform on the new recording date so Ken Campbell was a substitute - and steals the show. Due to the delay it was also a much more rehearsed episode than all the others (apart from Ken Campbell of course)
Nick Beer
2025-07-04 17:29:00 +0000 UTCAnd I think the only one that actually was. IIRC a floor manager on the show who was good at crosswords made them all up and said this was the only genuine anagram

2025-07-04 17:27:08 +0000 UTCUna Stubbs - legend. Sherlock, Worzel Gummidge, Summer Holiday and Give us a Clue with the Grange Hill music.

2025-07-04 17:18:39 +0000 UTCActually when I said duty bound, I wasn't referring to Mike and Jess. I was more explicitly referring to the notion that sometimes something can get over-praised (and of course Cleese's Python legacy has in impact in this) to the point that it's almost heresy to be critical of it. Don't get me wrong, there are some excellent episodes in the 12; but there are also some duff ones, and this one actually drives me insane. And yet, I liked the absolute mayhem of the Kipper and the Corpse. But die hard fans would have you believe that every episode is a classic, but that's far from the case. So yes, we all approach things with a degree of subjectivity, else how would form opinions about things. But actually, from an objective position, some episodes - this one in particular - are far from classic. Although, I did enjoy Una Stubbs' appearance I had a bit of a crush on her ever since her Give Us Clue days!

2025-07-04 16:16:18 +0000 UTCPersonally I think this is the worst episode, as it veers into unbelievability, and doesn't have a satisfying ending. Thankfully the next and last episode is one of the greatest.
Jay
2025-07-04 13:54:46 +0000 UTCAnd Basil in particular has the kind of traditional British stereotype of keeping emotions hidden and not revealing problems even to his friends. Also explains his nervousness about the psychiatrist staying in the hotel!
Andrew PC
2025-07-04 13:18:00 +0000 UTCSurprised it's the most highly rated, as I always thought this was the worst episode by far. Especially considering it's stuck between two of the best episodes.
Jay
2025-07-04 13:04:09 +0000 UTCSeems like you're trying to project your own feelings for the show on to Mike and Jess. Not once have they seemed bored by Fawlty Towers, and generally the show has endured in popularity for 50 years, which is pretty impressive. "Tedious" shows don't tend to hold that kind of popularity, so I think it's more your own subjective opinion than anything else. Shame you can't get into it though.
Jay
2025-07-04 13:02:08 +0000 UTCYou've finally fallen for the "Aargh, if that were me I'd...!" or "Why doesn't he just...?" Comes to us all eventually.

2025-07-04 12:45:46 +0000 UTCRoger's hair. He's a bit cocky with the sass for someone trying to get away with that construction on his bonce.

2025-07-04 12:36:48 +0000 UTCFlowery Twats is an exact anagram of Fawlty Towers :-)
Steve Moppett
2025-07-04 12:26:16 +0000 UTCYeah the storyline does have holes for any normal person, but I think this demonstrates how un-normal Basil is. The office is basically a homage to Fawlty Towers and David Brent is essentially a homage to Basil Fawlty. Neither can stand the fact that they lose face or look bad to people. Neither of which are good people really, and are kind of the villains in the showpiece
Daz Parker
2025-07-04 12:08:33 +0000 UTCSometimes I think people feel duty bound to say how great a sitcom Fawlty Towers is. Yes, some episodes are better than others but, honestly, I just find them tedious. I'm amazed you've managed to stay the course!
Paul08031977
2025-07-04 12:08:27 +0000 UTCHaha. This isn't the most highly rated episode, but I've listened to John Cleese talk about it and he said he wanted an episode which was about how much they love each other ... and you can see how Cybil genuinely does love him ... and in his own way it's a perfect demonstration of how much he loves her. But it would kill Basil to actually say it out loud or express it in anything like a normal fashion lol ...

2025-07-04 10:40:33 +0000 UTCNot a bad episode. Ken Campbell as Roger is a definite highlight of the episode for me.

2025-07-04 09:46:42 +0000 UTCNext episode is the absolute best one

2025-07-04 09:36:35 +0000 UTCNot everyone's favourite episode, but it's still streets ahead of most things. Roger is an absolute hoot in this.

2025-07-04 08:52:27 +0000 UTCSomething that doesn't get mentioned enough about Fawlty Towers is how good Prunella Scales is in it. All her feelings were on show in this one , the heartbreak when she thought Basil was happy for her to go

2025-07-04 08:32:00 +0000 UTCIt’s so exhausting that everything could be solved so simply 😂😂 Roger is my favourite
