Fawlty Towers - S2E4 'The Kipper and the Corpse'

First time I really enjoyed this episode. Seen it just a handful of times over the years and I'm 66.. Those two at the bottom corners of the screen had something to do with it, I'm sure of it 😊 If anyone cares there are more visual titbits I picked up, and a query. As it was meant for a curved low res CRT TV, I see the golf club name across the entrance as the van is leaving with JC at the end. Why did the Lounge go all disco like with the red drapes or whatever : is it the same room?

2025-07-02 21:31:55 +0000 UTCA kipper is just a herring that has been spit down the middle butterfly style and smoked usually over oak wood chips

2025-06-30 22:27:03 +0000 UTCI found myself looking at Booking.com the other day for hotels in this part of Devon, but in sleepy Brixham just down the Torbay coast rather than the urbane metropolis of Torquay. Apart from the eyewatering cost I was disappointed not to find anywhere with a comedically rude owner. Beautiful harbour though. Anyway, this might be my favourite episode, or certainly in the top three. Fabulous chaos.

2025-06-30 21:22:05 +0000 UTCManuel is actually a bit of a renaissance man, it was also revealed in Gourmet Night that he could cook paella and play guitar, and he speaks better English than Basil does Spanish. It took me rewatching these a while back to wonder if this is perhaps a joke on Basil, who treats Manuel like he's an absolute moron, but Manuel is actually far more talented, cultured, and sophisticated than him.

2025-06-30 21:15:22 +0000 UTCIt was, a place in Torquay called Gleneages, which is also the name of the place where the ladies have to go for dinner when the hotel is closed in The Builders. John Cleese reckoned the proprietor was the rudest man he had ever met.

2025-06-30 20:57:01 +0000 UTCI’m sure someone has said before this is based on a hotel Monty Python stayed in during the filming of the Holy Grail

2025-06-30 20:38:54 +0000 UTCAlthough not classics like Fawlty Towers I have a feeling you’ll like the Goes Wrong Show (which has a play of the week format) - pure farce but brilliantly crafted and performed, where everything connects; and before that was commissioned you have the recorded version of their Christmas (not) pantomime Peter Pan Goes Wrong - we always watch that around Christmas.

2025-06-30 20:23:25 +0000 UTCMiss Tibbs fainted the 2nd time she saw the dead body. Polly is innocent. 'He's a little Shitzu .. 'Oh dear, what breed is it?' I've stolen that line a few times when that breed has come up in conversation.

2025-06-30 18:41:28 +0000 UTCTechnicaly, there isn't a fish called a kipper. A "kipper" is a smoked herring. The process name is called "kippering". They gut and butterfly the herring then smoke them. They usually come with a knob of butter in the pack. You can technically eat them cold, but warm with the butter is the way to go. The isle of man is famous for its kippers - known as manx kippers

2025-06-30 18:20:36 +0000 UTCI think this is probably my favourite episode. Lots of great episodes, but I like the chaos in this

2025-06-30 18:02:58 +0000 UTC“So many moving parts…” It’s written to be a lot like a farce that would be shown in the theatre. Especially the parts that are across the limited downstairs locations, hall, dining room, kitchen.

2025-06-30 17:36:47 +0000 UTCAs far as I remember reading, the Mr Ingrams with the blow up doll was named after a critic who gave a bad review. So they put him in an embarrassing situation

2025-06-30 17:33:35 +0000 UTCWell this is a pleasant surprise, thanks very much! I’m just reminded that there was Counterstrike map that recreated the Fawlty Towers hotel…

2025-06-30 17:06:55 +0000 UTCGreat episode. I've seen an interview with John Cleese before, in which he said that the idea for this episode came from a conversation he had with a colleague who worked in a hotel. They were discussing the problems of how you discreetly remove the bodies of people who unfortunately pass away whilst staying in hotels. John Cleese said that so many ideas came rushing into his head for material for this episode.

2025-06-30 17:03:46 +0000 UTCReally pleased to read that you and your family are OK and your sister got home OK. Takes courage to get back in a car and drive so far so quickly after what happened but it really is the best thing to do. Its not easy though and she should be proud of herself.

2025-06-30 16:58:15 +0000 UTCThe best episode and character is yet to come, in my opinion
