I don't think he gets this, so Monty Python would definitely do a flyby/

2025-02-21 07:12:23 +0000 UTCThink you might watch some Monty Python after discovering the magic of John Cleese?? Its a very different vibe to this but the style of the humour is similar and so different to anything out there today

2025-02-16 19:44:13 +0000 UTCThere is a long form documentary celebrating the 30th anniversary (IIRC - so also pretty old) with lots of tales from how the series came about and outtakes. The fact that fascinates me is that no two episodes were the same length and none were standard length. These were on the BBC so no commercial breaks and an expected length of 29 mins 30 secs but some were considerably over the 30 mins because you cannot edit perfection.

2025-02-15 19:54:12 +0000 UTCYeh the character was a racist old man, and I imagine in 1975 a lot of people knew a racist old man, so in that way it was probably familiar.

2025-02-15 03:46:27 +0000 UTCIt does have a very particular word that is incredibly offensive to Americans. At the time the British speaking world were just waking up to how offensive it was, it was common slang back in the day. Basil, no matter how traditional and conservative he is, looks down on the Major when he uses that word. It’s very interesting that scene was written into the script, John and Connie would have to have discussed that for a long time and come to the conclusion it was worth keeping in.

2025-02-14 23:19:16 +0000 UTCMy favourite episode of Fawlty Towers. Every second is meticulously written and played and that ending, Basil's scream, is sublime!

2025-02-14 20:48:42 +0000 UTCFather Ted is a show you guys will love. One of the funniest comedys ever made. It's like this except it's about priests.

2025-02-14 20:43:26 +0000 UTCThe BEST ending to ANY episode of ANY sitcom. First watched it when I was 11, must have watched it hundreds of times.

2025-02-14 18:58:46 +0000 UTCThe idea for this show came from the Monty Python team staying in a hotel and the owner was what John Cheese based Basil on . One of the stories was one of Monty Python left a briefcase at the hotel and when he came back to ask if it had been found the owner said it was down the end of the garden and when asked why he said " oh we thought it was a bomb we've had some staff problems"

2025-02-14 18:44:10 +0000 UTCAmazing that you thought that Bernard Cribbins and Peter Kay sounded similar. I'd never thought about it and never thought of any similarity. Bernard had such a long and distinguished career I'd never thought of him as being born in the North, but yes, it turns out they were born in villages not far from each other. Both in Lancashire. Well spotted.

2025-02-14 18:26:48 +0000 UTCI’ve never been a fan of the Carry On films.

2025-02-14 18:18:34 +0000 UTCJess, that's why waiters ask the customer to taste the wine first, in case it is corked!
Eddy
2025-02-14 17:46:25 +0000 UTCAnd a 'Carry On' stalwart, of course. I was thinking of recommending Mitchell and Webb's "1970s bawdy hospital", but decided Mike and Jess would need to be familiar with the former to get the humour.

2025-02-14 17:44:29 +0000 UTCFunny you should talk about political correctness, as episode 6 of this series does have a scene that has caused a lot of controversy. I won't spoil it, but it's worth mentioning that there is some "regressive" language used. Although It has to be said that there's a perfectly good reason for that scene in the context of the episode, so I hope you understand the meaning behind it. The writers John Cleese and Connie Booth never resorted to lazy offensive comedy, so there is always a meaning behind every scene.

2025-02-14 17:22:49 +0000 UTCSo glad you are enjoying this show and hopefully at sometime in the future you will sit down and watch the entire series again, Basil is a total nutcase lol

2025-02-14 17:22:14 +0000 UTCBrilliant acting, precise blocking, and masterful choreography, with extended takes between scenes—giving it a theatrical quality rather than the pacing of a typical TV show.

2025-02-14 16:10:08 +0000 UTCWhen the first series was filmed John Cleese was married to Connie Booth who plays Polly. They split up but still did the second series together. Don’t worry about saying spastic we avoid using it here but no one will care that you said it as your meaning is different. Reminds me of the fact we (well some of us) call a cigarette a fag .

2025-02-14 15:37:34 +0000 UTCGood spot on the accent. Peter Kay is from Bolton and this actor, Bernard Cribbins RIP, was from Oldham, 20 miles east. Both towns are part of Greater Manchester, yet the accent in the city of Manchester is distinctly different to those found in these two towns.
