The Inbetweeners - S1 E6 Xmas Party

I have a mate who's a bit like Jay. No where near as crass but he will make up stuff just for the conversation. Felt a bit like Simon when he was like "I've known you for ten years and you've never planned a party".

2025-02-10 01:37:12 +0000 UTCAlcohol wasn't a big deal in this country when this was set. People brought crates of beer to my 'prom' (we left school at 16) and the school just turned a blind eye. I'd guess it's different now with social media, but I don't know.

2025-02-03 19:09:00 +0000 UTCI'm in my late 30s but grew up in a small town. We were in the pubs by 15, obviously there were only certain pubs you could and as long as you didn't take the piss - ie wear a Sponge Bob t-shirt or something, sat there and had a few drinks with your mates - no issues. As I moved away and would go back to the see the parents, it did get more strict, to the point the pub we mostly when to (The Ship Inn) closed down.

2025-02-03 18:20:18 +0000 UTCHahaha.. was always either QC or Advocate and lemonade (or wee bottle of snowball) we got at my grandparents.. don’t think I ever got one at that age when we were eating out tho😝 haha
Caroline
2025-02-03 18:04:09 +0000 UTCMe and my brother used to drink Pimms and Lemonade quite regularly at my Gran's house at Xmas every year, from about the age of 6. She even tried buying it for us in a hotel bar when we were out to lunch one Xmas and she couldn't understand why the barman wouldn't let us have it being under 10 years old lol 😂

2025-02-03 15:50:37 +0000 UTCDrinking in the UK Age 5-17: At home or on private premises: A child aged 5 or over can legally drink alcohol at home or on private premises under adult supervision. However, the NHS and health experts strongly advise against giving alcohol to children due to its health risks. In a licensed premises (e.g., pub, restaurant): Under 16: Cannot drink alcohol in a pub, even if with an adult. Age 16-17: Can drink beer, wine, or cider with a meal if accompanied by an adult, but cannot buy the alcohol themselves. Age 18 and Over: Fully legal to buy and consume alcohol in pubs, bars, restaurants, supermarkets, and off-licences. Can buy any type of alcohol without restriction (subject to licensing hours and venue policies). Additional Rules and Restrictions: Buying alcohol for under-18s: It is illegal for an adult to buy alcohol for someone under 18, except when purchased in a pub or restaurant for a 16- or 17-year-old having a meal. Possession in public: Police can confiscate alcohol from anyone under 18 drinking in public and may issue fines. Drink driving: There is a strict legal limit for drivers (lower in Scotland than in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland).

2025-02-03 04:14:28 +0000 UTCI'll post this wherever I see the request for Peep Show (my all-time favourite comedy) can't afford to right now, but maybe send the first series on US region NTSC to their new PO box from Amazon.com? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A2UBOS/

2025-02-03 02:28:51 +0000 UTCI'm 62 and never had any trouble at any pub anywhere buying alcohol from 15 years of age (and I looked very young for my age until at least my 50s). I never heard of police raids. Maybe Somerset (where I had the misfortune to be dragged as a 12 year old) pubs were lax, or something?
Eddy
2025-02-03 02:27:28 +0000 UTCVery close, it’s because the school would not have a licence to sell alcohol so they sell vouchers to exchange for alcohol ie no money passes hands for alcohol.

2025-02-02 23:41:59 +0000 UTCBack in the day,(I'm 63 now) but it was common for us to go in certain pubs at 16 years of age. We knew which landlords turned a blind eye. There were often police raids but pubs had back doors so we mainly got away. The good old days.

2025-02-02 22:56:02 +0000 UTCI submitted the 1st episode of both IT Crowd and Peep Show to their Comedy playlist on youtube, so hopefully 1 or both appear in a poll soon :)

2025-02-02 22:31:10 +0000 UTCI suspect it's something to do with the cold, wet climate and our cultural ancestry, Vikings, Anglo Saxon Germanic tribes and all that. The Viking nations also love a drink, whereas the Latin nations can laze around all day in the heat and drink slowly!
Eddy
2025-02-02 22:21:42 +0000 UTCJust join the pateron! i too would love to see peep show at some point , also the ITcrowd :) , there's many more but them two are among the top , its modern comedy and absolutely shits on the like of faulty towers or OFAH , dont get me wrong OFAH is also among my fav shows , but the comedy from them shows like Ftowers is something my nan would find funny , really really tame , ITC and PS are just leagues and leagues ahead for real , a non comedy would be Inside number 9 , easily the best non comedy show by far. you need to look into inside number 9 :) peace from England , hope yall doing well! , i got banned from making comments on youtube around a year and a half ago so its nice to comment here lol , (literally had a 16 yo account comment banned for zero reason , really crazy stuff youtube has goin on! still cant make any comment since then! such a bad site)

2025-02-02 21:15:11 +0000 UTCBrits have a bad reputation on the continent of Europe for drinking. I’ve experienced it from both sides, having been on lads holidays when I was younger before meeting, falling in love and marrying an Italian lady. She once asked me ‘why do the British drink so much?’ and I couldn’t really explain it. Now, I will enjoy a glass of wine with a meal, but otherwise don’t drink alcohol.
Thomas
2025-02-02 19:48:32 +0000 UTCI didn’t like the taste, so wouldn’t drink it but always asked for it because I liked how bubbly it was in the glass😌😂
Caroline
2025-02-02 19:46:02 +0000 UTCI was almost teetotal most of my adult life, but am drinking about 1.5 glasses of red wine a night presently, because my neurologist advised it would help with my catastrophically bad Parkinson's tremor! I'm still hoping we can stop or 'manage' it though, so that I can cut out the drinking again.

2025-02-02 19:23:30 +0000 UTCAfter being on Mike and Jess's livestream, it is worth pointing out that it stars Mitchell and Webb (oh, and a subsequently famous and Oscar winning Olivia Colman), since they are still unfamiliar with the names (Mitchell being the erudite team captain on WILTY). It is my favourite comedy of the last 20-30 years, so I agree it would be fabulous to see their reactions. Arguably, it doesn't really start to hot up until season 2 though. Personally, I find it far, far funnier than Only Fools and Horses, Derek (not my cup of tea), or any of the other comedies that appear to be on their radar at present, unfortunately, so I don't hold out much hope, unless I can think of a huge present (bribe) to send to their PO box! 🤣

2025-02-02 19:17:00 +0000 UTCUsed to love a Babycham 😂

2025-02-02 18:57:48 +0000 UTCI think because it’s so much easier to get around without driving here and in Europe, and why DUIs are so high in the US. Yeah same here, I barely drink now.

2025-02-02 18:57:10 +0000 UTCAfter Inbetweeners you guys have to check out Peep Show, its like a more grown up version of inbetweeners. Its hilarious

2025-02-02 18:44:27 +0000 UTCThe whole teacher/student relations thing is too sensitive for reductive slogans on Patreon, but it's a thing here too, naturally. 16 is the age of consent here, but it is now illegal for a teacher to have sex with anyone under 18 and would result in going on the sex offenders register, because it is considered a safeguarding issue. In the 70s, my PE teacher (isn't it always!) started dating a 16 year old classmate, but they eventually married. Make of that what you will. The other (male) PE teacher was later found to be having sex with the underage young boys who were boarders. We all know what to make of that...
Eddy
2025-02-02 18:37:47 +0000 UTCWe were given either sherry, shandy (lager & lemonade) or babycham every New Year for the bells for as far back as I can remember. Were taught to drink alcohol responsibly from a really young age and wasn’t treated as a forbidden fruit. Much love to you all from Scotland x
Caroline
2025-02-02 18:11:40 +0000 UTCIt has always seemed strange to me that in the US it is legal to drive earlier than the UK, when that is very dangerous, but legal to drink much earlier in the UK and the rest of Europe when studies show that supervised drinking at a young age leads to fewer problems as an adult. Our parents would allow us a small glass of wine at dinner occasionally from about the age of 8, and and my sisters and I have never been big drinkers.
Eddy
2025-02-02 16:11:50 +0000 UTCYou really should react to an episode of Educating Yorkshire, it’s an Emmy-winning fly-on-the wall series about a real-life English high school. You’ll see that The Inbetweeners isn’t too far-fetched. The episodes are self-contained so it could be a consideration for Thursday. I think you’ll find it fascinating, judging by some of your Inbetweeners observations.
Thomas
2025-02-02 16:09:38 +0000 UTCIm afraid I am with Mike on the Christmas decorations. They should be taken down by 12th night or else tradition states they will be possessed by Goblins. Not good!
Eddy
2025-02-02 15:56:37 +0000 UTCCan’t wait to see you react to season 2!!
Simon
2025-02-02 15:52:56 +0000 UTCI think that dress would be considered fairly conservative here, it’s a difference of perspectives just like with the alcohol
Kieran B
2025-02-02 15:46:22 +0000 UTCWhich you then said later on Jess 😄
Kieran B
2025-02-02 15:39:55 +0000 UTCThe legal age to *buy* alcohol is 18, which is probably why they have vouchers so they’re not technically buying it, you can actually drink from the age of 5 in your own home / under adult supervision etc - but that usually amounts to a tiny glass of wine at Christmas or something if you’re under 10 - it was for me anyway. Makes it much less of a taboo thing to rebel against. If the school provides it at the prom it means people are less likely to sneak stronger stuff in and they can control it better
Kieran B
2025-02-02 15:28:29 +0000 UTCWe will be doing a live stream here on Patreon in the next hour to talk about season 1 of The Inbetweeners! We didn't talk about it during the episode because we didn't even realize it was the finale of season 1. 😂 See you all soon!
