Still Game - S1 E1 Episode 1

Comments

But this was mainly done in my experience because his body was being cremated in Scotland, but he wanted his ashes scattered in a lake that was close to him in Ireland

Ricky

17:28 minutes in… I am from Glasgow, but I’m more Irish than Scottish,, and it’s a very common thing to have the body of the recently departed took away by the undertakers, then brought back, and left in the house for 1-2 weeks… I’m not joking when I say, I slept in the same room as my departed grandad when I was literally 8yo… then his coffin was carried to the church by foot, it’s very normal here

Ricky

6:20 minutes in, I grew up in this exact area of south nitshill/pollok in the early 2000s, it may look like a rubbish dump, but it was a great childhood, exploring all the abandoned houses with your friends…. Full of ecstasy and whatever else.. I’m 35 now, but I was 14 back then when it looked like this

Ricky

Gonnae no say that 😂

what's cool about this show as the years go by they need less makeup to be the old guys :D also Iza was a drama teacher and taught my niece :) my sister and her friend helped babysit the actor victors child. just shows how small and tight Scotland is :)

You will laugh and cry till the very end. Almost like therapy...

FRASBO .

Looking forward to this. Please stick with it. It will make you laugh one minute and cry the next. It's not just a comedy, it's a journey with the cast

Malcom Kumar

It gets better as it goes on.

I just can’t get behind this one for some reason. I can’t handle the laugh track and the poor quality jokes (from what I’ve seen). Maybe I’ll give it another go.

I've watched about 4 American reactors go through Still Game, and you guys hands down did best with understanding the accent. Please stick with the series, it's actually got so much heart, it deals with old person issues in a funny and sometimes poignant way. The comedy is also incredibly physical at times. There are episodes that made people in Scotland go and check on their older relatives. Please keep going!

Most of the terms you’ll work out the meaning for yourself but here are a few terms you’ll hear a lot in Still Game (and from Kevin Bridges), maybe others can add to this: how? = why? hen = love/honey/darling etc hee haw = nothing hauns = hands jakey = junkie ned = a young uneducated person that’s up to no good and causes trouble, usually they wear stuff like tracksuits. The group of kids outside the shop were neds.

Thank you so much for sharing this! It’s incredible how the show can strike such a perfect balance between comedy and heartfelt moments. That scene with Jack and Victor really stood out to us. It’s those deeper moments that make a show so much more than just funny. We’re so glad you’re enjoying watching it with us and getting to relive it all over again. It means a lot to hear how much the show means to you, and we can’t wait to experience more of those special moments together!

I’m so thrilled you decided to dive into full episodes of shows! You’re honestly the ones I most look forward to seeing when I refresh my notifications. I started watching reactors during the pandemic as a way to feel connected to real people, and now it’s become my guilty pleasure, especially since I work from home. Your reactions are such a welcome distraction from all the nonsense happening in the world right now. I’m here for the long haul, and if I could make just one small suggestion, it would be to add a drama to your viewing list. Keep up the great work, lovin' what you do!

It wasn’t a bad episode to start, in season 7, you got to know the characters. You will really enjoy

Graham Rodgers

As a Scottish person who has watched Still Game hundreds of times, I can honestly say that despite it being a Comedy with the main purpose of making the audience laugh, there are so many special moments like the one with Jack talking to Victor about his late wife. It’s an incredibly funny show with a lot of heart and I’m so happy you’re taking the time to watch it with us and that I get to experience it all for the “first” time all over again, so thank you for that!😊🩵

Just for info, if you are looking for more views on YouTube quite a lot of reactors have had no copyright issues when uploading their reactions to full episodes of Still Game from seasons 1-6, so might be worth looking into that if you are interested in more viewing figures. I believe the newer seasons from 7 onwards have had copyright issues though. Love this series, and love the reaction 🙂

Winston is the GOAT. Which is funny because when I watched the first episode he was the only character I didn’t really like much.

You should check out Only Fools And Horses, and The Royle Family next, 2 of the greatest british sitcoms ever.

Flittin' is just Scottish for moving house. They're pensioners so they're dealing with the local housing association. I don't know what you'd call in the US, is it social security housing? Basically for those on lower incomes. This process is very specific to that. It's always why the area is a bit rundown.

I can honestly say i have watched every episode of seasons 1-6 well over a hundred times and it really never ever loses the humour. Great reaction as always, so glad you are enjoying it so much already, it gets sooooo much better as it goes on. :)

You may be interested to know that seasons 1-6 actually had the same opening theme tune as season 7 onwards, but anywhere outside of BBC iPlayer (e.g. Netflix), it has been replaced with this inferior theme tune, presumably due to rights issues. The BBC had their own orchestra re-record the opening theme for series 7 onwards, which I guess is why there are no rights issues preventing it being used on those episodes.

The housing is social housing, owned by the council/local government. It is provided to low income families / individuals for free or a nominal rent. Jack and Victor were needing to ask the local housing office (run by the council) to allow him to move between properties. Usually there’s waiting lists etc, so that’s why they were having to plead to be allowed to move Jack between properties.

There were a few references that maybe wouldn't make sense, like Winston's leg was referenced in the episode you watched, that gets explained in the earlier seasons. But they are mostly episodic and no grand storyline. Quite a lot of people probably haven't seen the early seasons as they were only originally broadcast in Scotland. But the characters came from a late 90s live play, which later had a DVD release and is on YouTube. The characters of Jack and Victor were later carried into a sketch show called 'Chewin' the Fat', lots of Scottish characters but these proved to be popular so then broke off into their own show. A bit like how some SNL characters got their own series or films. On the gap you reference, yeah it got reported they'd had a falling out (Greg and Ford who are the writers and play Jack and Victor), as one of the production companies was theirs. Greg said he was smoking 60 a day and they started to disagree on the future of the company etc etc. Then split. There's some characters brought into the 7/8/9 season that I wasn't really a fan of, but definitely the final season sees it off, so worth sticking with if you're enjoying it.
