Blur - Song 2

Comments

This is their reaction to Nirvana

Jamie

So fun fact, Blur are my favourite band of all time. Song 2 is probably their most recognisable hit (played in sports arenas around the world) but it's not particularly the best example of who they are as a band. For that i suggest the tracks Bettlebum, Tender, This is a low, or Caramel :)

This needs to be on repeat to get full value

Blur - ‘Blur’ album that this is off was the pinnacle for me, every track is so good. I would say do Beetlebum next , but they may want to go for something a bit different sounding. Girls and Boys would be my choice next for a more pop Blur…Alex’s funky baseline contrasting against Grahams moody guitar..Ace

Oasis are a pair of tossers. Thought that from the start.

This was actually written as a bit of a joke - just coming back to listen to reaction now. The lyrics don't mean anything, the riffs aren't what you'd normally get from them. It was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek - parody of what the American rock bands were doing at the time. It turned into a massive success.

I've been lucky enough to see Blur at Glastonbury back in the mid-nineties. They had a pretty unsuccessful tour of the US in the early 90's and Damon on their return decided he was not going to go down the usual route of trying to make music to break America but be unashamedly British and their early songs were just that. Today Damon is respected by musicians and not only has a band with a former Clash member 'The Good The Bad And The Queen', but is the brains behind the virtual band 'Gorillaz', I'd love you to watch the video for their 2010 track 'Stylo', it's a great track pulling together the legend Bobby Womack with Mos Def, it sounds crazy but Damon pulls it off.

Ironically, Blur are known for their story-telling lyrics, so this (although popular in its own right) Song No.2 is not that representative of their music. They write about English life and sing in English accents. Girls and Boys, Parklife, Tender, End O The Century, The Universal, Charmless Man and Country House are some of their hits that spring to mind.

It was Michael Bisping's walkout song

Agree, especially about Radiohead who are probably my favourite band of all time. Total geniuses! I was always a bigger fan of Blur than Oasis. The latter had some OK songs but Blur were so much more creative. Pulp and Supergrass also massively overlooked when one considers the attention Oasis got.

This isn't my favourite Blur song, as popular as it is, but it's still Blur, so that's all good with me! 😃

Blur and Radiohead are the best British bands of the past 30 years. Many will say Oasis but the diversity/musicianship of both Blur and Radiohead really is so far ahead of Oasis.

Love this so much

If you’ve listened to Gorillaz, you will recognise Damon Albarn, who is the lead singer of blur and is also in Gorillaz (unsure if he created it). Some history on blur there is / was a big north/south divide with this band and Oasis in England typically

People of a certain vintage will hear this song and instantly think of FIFA 98 on the PS1...
