The Stranglers - Golden Brown

Comments

To be fair to you guys I spent my childhood having no idea what the song was about either! Only found out later in life because someone told me. I wouldn't expect you to just get it from this

Richard Stokes

We listened, but we know nothing about heroin. Unless they straight up said it was about heroin it would just go over our heads.

https://youtu.be/Z8w71GonwPU?feature=shared This is the mojo top 10 britpop anthems, which will give you a snippet of some of the best bands. Some say there were maybe 80 or so bands you could say were britpop from the era. Thought it would give you a start to see what you like. Sleeper, The Charlatans, Echobelly and The Stereophonics should be on here too really. I'll send on a britpop documentary at some point if you take a shine to the time and want to find out more. V interesting time in the UK and in music

Richard Stokes

Yes, for context, music in the UK underwent a major re-set in the UK in 1976. I had seen the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin live in my early teens, but it felt like it was the music of older siblings for many, not all, of my generation. We rejected the long guitar and drum solos and embraced younger bands who really spoke for us. The Sex Pistols were the first real band in what became known as the punk movement. They really helped change music and opened up the way for the Indy music the UK is famous for. Americans never fully embraced this music, although many younger US reactors seem to appreciate it. I’ve included a link to the Sex Pistols’ Anarchy In The UK. It would be cool if you were to react to it. I still love it at the age of 67. By the way, the drummer is wearing a ‘I Hate Pink Floyd’ T-shirt. https://youtu.be/q31WY0Aobro?si=P65_TdlAU-BAYkW_

I hate to tell you what it's about but like so many songs it's about tripping out on Heroin! https://youtu.be/xgzDQwWygAc?feature=shared this is a good one of theirs more like their actual punk sound-No More Heroes. They are miming on top of the pops but it's quite amusing!

Richard Stokes

I had the same thought, as the US missed out on most of what Pete describes. Some key moments in music among them. And I think you would enjoy them too.

Richard Stokes

Oh completely get that, yeah they do but it’s meant as an insult - that’s why I thought I’d let you know as I expected just based on that you probably wouldn’t be aware. Not a dig or anything

I appreciate the info. She was asking who Brid Pitt played in the movie. They refer to him as Pikey throughout the film.

RegenerationNationTV

Just so you’re aware ‘pikey’ is generally considered to be a derogatory term - Irish Traveller would be the acceptable term to be used 🙂 Gypsy tends to be a bit more acceptable in some situations, but they would generally use Romani / Romany

Kieran B

It’s a harpsichord

Cool tune. Stranglers emerged during the punk era in the UK of the late 70s, although their musicianship was more sophisticated than regular punk. This period through to Britpop of the mid 90s would be a rich seam for you to explore. From raw punk of the Sex Pistols and The Clash to Mod music of The Jam (my fave) through New Wave of Elvis Costello, Indy of The Smiths, Stone Roses through to Britpop of Blur, Oasis and Pulp.

One of my all-time favourites - Strange Little Girl is another great one from The Stranglers

Kieran B

This is probably one of most favourite songs about heroin....it's in my top three at least!

Jason Bonner

1981, despite sounding like a love song it's about a particular type of heroin.Great band from my youth I was 17

Keith Evans

Listen to the lyrics

Mr Snrub

It’s about heroin
