Nature!

Nature! Also, game backgrounds, 2007 and New versions.

So, I had a problem with the SFK scene and in looking for a fix for it, I upgraded my 3D software from the version I'm comfortable with, having used it for YEARS, to the new version that can do lots of fancy new stuff but works differently.

I took a little break from the scene, because I didn't want to mess it up while trying to "fix" it, and I tried getting the hang of the new software just messing around on some other graphics. That effort is where the last image came from too.

I discovered some really great new features that could help me in a bunch of different ways - to make certain things go faster, or look better, but also to give me new possibilities for features in my software (which are usually just, as someone once observed, "glorified Powerpoint presentations").

I found this old RPG stuff I had made to test out a programming idea, years ago - before ever starting the SFK! And I tried messing around with updating the graphics -- from stuff drawn in Flash with a mouse, hastily done over the course of about two days, to the best 3D art I could do in the new version of the software, over the past few days.

I'm all excited about it!

The attached files are the ruins for the new thing, and one of the original images from the 2007 version (in its original resolution - 640x480).

Basically, it's a little playable "RPG" combat system, where you can choose your character class and a monster to fight, and also stand around at a couple of different backgrounds if you want. ^_^'''

The two important things are:

1. It's a little bit of a proof of concept for the SFK RPG I want to make eventually.

2. I know how to use the new version of my 3D software I was scared to upgrade to!

I was just going to poke at this RPG thing until I got comfortable with the 3D software, but I got so excited that I've created almost all the graphics. I may as well wrap it up over the next couple of days, and then I can upload it so you guys can play it too!

It's... strangely fun for such a stupid little game. I find it kind of addicting up to about level 14 characters, when all the abilities max out and the code for scaling up monsters and attacks unravels. But I don't have to fix it any time soon.

So yeah! This is a background from that, and I'm really excited about it, and I'm going to post the actual game in a couple of days when it's done! ^_^

(this is how much I talk when I'm excited)

now that's what we call an improvement!

I don't know if I'd do that for SFK stuff, which tends to have static backgrounds (except for bustling town establishing shots, and animating that would be a nightmare). I was thinking about doing at least a little of that for this project - not this time, since I want to get back to official work, but in the actual SFK RPG. I want it to look (and be) more alive and interactive than my usual work. It would be nice to have NPCs look like they're actually standing around, rather than frozen in place. This scene though, I think the sound would make it more than any movement, since it looks so still and peaceful. Imagine it with birds and cicadas and crickets and stuff. Ahh, it would sound like summertime. ^_^

This is a mockup of the new version: http://bit.ly/1MFltFS (I didn't put in the interface because I'm not sure if I'll tinker with it before throwing it online - I'm still working on the monsters for this afternoon).

Excited Galaxy is productive and happy Galaxy! Nice background, and wow have you come a long ways since back then. Ditto for technology as well. Any chance you could start animating your backgrounds with the new software? I always enjoyed looping-backgrounds in the old FMV games on early CD titles, and even some later ones like Real Fishing: Wild on Dreamcast.

cant wait to test this 'frankenstein's monster' in a couple of days... the background is picturesque enough, the proof is in the pudding though. i predict it will be a good thing.

nice characters :D as long as it works, some kind of reserve space is fine... yea, programming... uhg.

Oh, the original backgrounds weren't hastily painted in Flash, they were hastily painted in Photoshop. The characters were all done in flash, and looked like this: http://bit.ly/1GUFYy0 I was very proud to have made it though, as someone who does not consider herself a Programmer. ^_^
