Vibe Check: Professor Potter
Added 2022-11-09 15:59:02 +0000 UTCHere we are with the fourth of these eight Vibe Checks, and the last one of this week. I'll do the other four Vibe Checks next week when each of the other four Patreon Exclusive Stories updates.
If you missed the other three Vibe Checks I've done so far, this is basically me checking in with the readers of each of my eight Patreon Stories to see where we stand and how you guys are feeling.
Not going to lie, out of all eight of my fics, I feel like Professor Potter is the most... anemic, I guess you could say?
When I started Professor Potter with the basic concept of Harry returning to Hogwarts for his Seventh Year but as the DADA Professor instead, I didn't really have any idea what to do with it. I think that's probably noticeable.
Eventually, I decided I needed to spice things up for myself and for my readers. I added in a bunch of characters from outside of the Harry Potter Universe in an effort to make it feel more unique.
I feel like I failed if I'm being honest. Maybe I'm wrong, and if I am it's up to you guys to tell me so, but I feel like Professor Potter has lost most of its audience at this point.
If I were to start a new Harry Potter fic in place of Professor Potter, I think I might go ahead and explore the Harry Potter, PI concept that I've done for both commission and my prompt poll at this point. Where Harry is a Private Investigator taking cases and doing his own thing and of course, bedding tons of sexy witches along the way.
Or maybe its time to finally jump into the realm of Harry Potter crossovers and do a Master of Death!Harry fic in another setting?
That's just a couple of ideas though, might end up going with something else. Or we stick with Professor Potter.
That's where all of you come in. Is it time to wrap up Professor Potter? Or am I reading into things too much and I should keep it going?

I'm gonna put it up to a vote, so keep an eye out and make sure to make your opinion heard there. Master of Death!Harry in another world will be just one option, and if it wins then we'll figure out which world he's traveled to. But I think it'll have some tough competition against the PI Harry Potter concept, which will have no crossover whatsoever if it wins

While I am enjoying Professor Potter well enough, when there's a character from a fandom that I'm unfamiliar with it takes me out of the story mostly because I'm not sure if that character is actually in character. And while I know I can just keep reading the story a lot of the enjoyment is lost to me in those situations.

But when it became a choice between proper HP characters or the expies, people chose the proper HP characters every time. So I definitely recognize now that either I failed in how I introduced the out of universe characters, or I simple failed to realize they weren't what people wanted in general

2022-11-09 18:43:31 +0000 UTCThere's been plenty of interaction with some of the out of universe characters throughout the last 20-30 chapters. However, pretty early on it became apparent that my patrons didn't really want to interact with the Lodge of Sorceresses characters that make up the bulk of the faculty changes. Maybe my mistake was putting it to a vote, but whenever I let them vote on who to interact with, they avoided the Witcher characters in favor of any other characters lol. Still, yeah, maybe I shouldn't have put it to a vote. Definitely one of the ways I failed with this fic, I agree

2022-11-09 16:56:49 +0000 UTCYeah but I've done the whole "everyone starts Hogwarts years later" thing a few times now, and it still gets plenty of people who don't understand it, especially when I don't really bring it up afterwards lol. So I'm a little sick of having to age up the characters when I could just start at a time when they're already canonically older. That said, I do like the idea of a Harry who goes back in time to his Fourth Year or later. I don't think I've seen that done nearly as much to be honest, so it would be a fresh take on the Time Travel genre maybe. I'll include that as one of the options for patrons to vote on, I think

2022-11-09 16:55:57 +0000 UTCI mean the easiest thing to my mind is just to say everyone starts Hogwarts like 3-4 years later than they would. Or more as necessary. And then just from there. And don't really bring it up much subsequently. Alternatively you don't have to go all the way back to first year. Years 3 or 4 work well too as branch off points. I think the reason i prefer those over others is because it gives you a chance to have Tonks still in school. And i love tonks/Harry pairings.

Rehashing Hogwarts, College of Witchcraft and Wizardry but with Time Travel feels a little iffy to me. So might not include the idea. Prefer to just go Post-Canon where everyone is already of the appropriate age, like in Mutually Satisfactory Arrangements for instance

With the majority of my readers voting to lay this fic to bed, I don't imagine they'll have me resurrect it in the future lol

2022-11-09 16:28:39 +0000 UTCThere's definitely more than enough left to fill a Book 2, but if I do lay it to bed as a Book 1, I feel like the chances of Book 2 ever getting written are nil. That's probably why I'd spoil the rest of my imagined plot here on Patreon to let people know what I had in mind so that even if Book 2 never does get written, there's at least some sort of conclusion for those who liked the story

I definitely had a full-blown plot in mind for this story, but its not something that would have been completed in the next 15 or maybe even 30 chapters.

Aged up of course but basically a "he knows what's coming" type of deal. How would he change things? I think it would be a nice change from most of the post voldemort stories that we see
