NOTE-

Because Shayla is a reactionary character, she’s always present. To save time when writing the outline I didn’t include her all the time but in the actual book, you can expect her to make frequent comments/oneliners/comebacks.

Start

It’s been a few days since Coye met Shayla, and the two have been doing smaller-scale kill quests on and off.
We open on one such quest in the woods, where Coye is scoping out a medium-sized snake monster guarding its nest of eggs.
Coye sneaks around, then hits it with his beam of light.
It does decent damage, but it recovers fast and gets behind him, spitting venom.
Shayla makes a branch from a nearby tree fall off with a jinx, and it blocks the acid before withering.
Coye runs in and lops its head off.
The two congratulate each other, and we see how their partnership has been developing. Coye is more comfortable talking to Shayla, and she’s proven herself useful.
Coye gathers up all the eggs from the nest, and after counting them he said they’ll earn about 400G from it.
Shayla is still learning the value of gold, asks to be reminded if thats a little or a lot. Coye tells her it’s not bad for a bronze rank quest.
She wants to know if they’re gonna keep looking for more egg nests, but Coye doesn’t feel like it. It took them two hours to find one, and he feels like that’s enough work for today.
Shayla isn’t satisfied, saying he’s barely been doing any work since they’ve met. He is embarrassed but reminds her that there’s a reason. His increased arousal keeps distracting him.

Dorothy says it should be pretty soon, and she asks if they’re still giving him a hard time. We see she cares about him, offers to try and help him out some with their teasing even though they don’t listen to her, but Coye turns it down.

The Plan

Coye and Shayla are in an alleyway talking to each other about the next step. Coye has changed into casual clothes.
Shayla asks who his target is, and he’s embarrassed to be thinking about it.
Shayla tries to make him comfortable, telling him to think of the first girl that comes to mind. She predicts Dorothy, and he remains silent. He comes up with Mrs. Lillis from the item shop.

Mrs. Lillis has greeted Coye every day, and Shayla had been studying her each time. If he didn’t think of her himself, she was going to suggest the widow.
Shayla asks Coye to tell what he knows about her, and he does.
When Coye first came to Cransmere, he took on a small quest for Mrs. Lillis, and afterward, she helped get him used to the town. She was always real nice to him, and makes a lot of comments about being lonely now that her husband is dead.
Coye asks how she’ll help, and Shayla tells him she’ll give him advice on what to do and say.
He’s nervous, worrying if it’ll work, but Shayla has a romantic moment where she boosts his courage.
He’s super happy, but she’s a bit tsundere about getting all feelsy.

Suzette’s backroom was really just her living room, and he sits down on a sofa. The style of the room is dreary.
She returns with tea and rather than sitting on her armchair, she sits on the couch with him.
Suzette blanks out for a moment and apologizes. She gets flustered, explaining she just remembered how long it’d been since she had a man around.
Coye asks a little about her late husband but she is evasive about her husband, and visibly cold, giving Shayla some bad vibes.
Suzette makes small talk about how his career is going. Coye says he’s doing fine but that things have been weird lately.
Suzette inquires deeper, but Coye is unable to say anything back.
Shayla urges him to tell the truth, convinced it would earn him major points.
Coye struggles to think of a way to explain what the truth is, he ultimately comes up with a sarcastic jab at Shayla.
He asks Suzette if she knows what pixies are, she does, and Shayla freaks out that he’s about to reveal her to Suzette.
He doesn’t, instead says he got attacked by one in the woods. Suzette is concerned, but he clarifies he was attacked ‘down there’ and now he can’t stop thinking about naughty things.
Shayla is not amused but acknowledges how good this angle works.
Suzette is deeply worried, asking if he’s alright and if she can do anything to help. She scoots closer, taking his hand.
She tells him that as an adventurer, Coye is part of the reason this town can thrive the way it does. Suzette feels deeply indebted to them and says she would do anything to help an adventurer in need.
Coye asks anything? She clarifies anything.
Coye reveals that ever since he was attacked, his body won’t stop getting turned on and he doesn’t know what to do about it. It’s making it hard to focus on his job and he’s scared.
Suzette is astonished. Interested, but she can’t help feeling a bit of doubt over what he’s implying. She says that she’d do all she could to help him out, but that she’s an old lady and that sort of thing.

He wonders if things are weird between them now, but Suzette doesn’t think so.

She asks how he’s feeling, and Coye is really doing good today. He’s able to focus for the first time in days, and feels like he could get back to doing bigger adventures again.
Suzette rubs his thigh under the table and says that if things get bad again he should come back to her. She unintentionally acts creepy, and says how alone she’s been.

Suzette softens, before asking if this was a one-off thing or not. She understands that she’s an older lady and all that and just wants to know whether or not to get her hopes up.
Shayla doesn’t know what to think anymore, leaving the judgment up to Coye.
Coye wants to spend more time with Suzette and doesn’t want this to be a one-time affair.
She’s very relieved, and they share a kiss.

Byng

Suzette needs to open up shop since she closed early, and Coye is eager to get back to work. More so, he’s eager to get himself to an alleyway so he can talk to Shayla.
Only a few steps forward, and Shayla warns him to watch out. He steps into a trap that snares his leg and trips him.
An arrow flies toward him, Shayla uses magic to stop it before it hits him only to find out it was some sort of weird prank arrow and it wouldn’t have hurt him.
Coye reveals this was Byng’s work, and he looks up to find her perched on a nearby rooftop.
We get some minor narration about who Byng is and her relationship with Coye thus far. While not part of his bullies, she teases him a lot in her own way mostly regarding hunting him down for fun and testing arrows on him ever since they met. She practically lives in the Gnarled Woods and doesn’t show up to the Guild very often.
Byng hops down, is upset her arrow didn’t hit. She wanted to test it and is curious how it was deflected.
Coye lies, saying he’d been practicing his magic lately.
Things are awkward as Byng stares him down, but Shayla encourages him to make small talk with the cute girl. He manages to ask what she’s doing in town, but Byng ignores him and asks why he stayed overnight at the store lady’s house.
Coye blushes and can’t say, but Byng eyes him over and notices that he seems different, and asks if he’s become a man.
His stuttering response amuses Byng, and she takes that to mean yes. She’s interested but lets him go- for now. She only stopped in town to grab a few things and is headed straight back to the woods.
She starts to walk away but Shayla sees an opportunity here, and she bangs on Coye’s head to get him to ask her to hang out sometime. He’s overwhelmed at the idea but ends up asking Byng if she wants to go on a quest together.
Byng stops, look back, smiles big sharp smile. She’s impressed and tells him tomorrow, but warns it’s not gonna be easy if he wants to impress her. Coye tries to explain he meant as friends, but Byng realizes this is one of those Karnallian dates she’s heard so much about and won’t let him correct her.
She darts off in a good mood, Coye is embarrassed and suddenly regrets asking Byng out.
Shayla brings attention to Suzette standing at the doorway to her shop.
Suzette looks somewhat creepy as she stares, before asking if he really just picked up a girl right in front of her house. Coye tries to explain, but she ends up laughing and pulling him to her breasts for a hug. She’s not jealous, just wanted to give him a little scare.
Suzette encourages him to have as much fun as he likes, since she doubts she can keep up with him anyway. She shoos him off, Coye and Shayla are both scared thinking Suzette was gonna go crazy on him.

Dorothy

Coye returns to the Guild in a good mood, finding Dorothy near the quest board. She’s arguing with some maids who are being lazy and won’t do their job. This ends with the maids fucking off to not work, and Dorothy on the verge of stress tears.
She’s relieved to see him, she was worried when he didn’t come home yesterday seeing as how he always sleeps at the Guild. Coye is happy to know Dorothy cares for him, but Shayla reminds him not to fall for her fakeness.
Dorothy asks where he was, and Coye struggles to say. Shayla encourages him to be honest and Coye says something along the lines having had a date.
Dorothy thinks she’s tired and misheard him, but after asking more, she understands that Coye stayed over at a woman’s place and she starts blushing. She can’t believe it and struggles to keep talking normally.
She changes topic, asking if he feels ready to get back to work, and he’s happy to announce he wants to take on a bigger quest. He wants her advice on any he should take, but Dorothy ends up excusing herself to her office.
Dorothy sits down at her desk, all littered with graphs about profit margins, unmet quotas and warning letters from the association. We don’t get much idea of what she’s thinking, but she sighs and pushes all of them off of her desk and takes a book about monsters from her drawer out and starts to read.
Her focus is bad, she can’t enjoy the thing that makes her happy, and she starts to nap. She mumbles ‘at least he’s happy’ as she drifts off.

Rest of the day

In a good mood, Coye registered a big kill quest for an Owlbear. It was seen north of Cransmere, so it probably wandered out of the woods and got last. It killed a few peasants and needs to be put down.
The battle goes great until it calls for its mate, who then shows up. Shayla starts helping out, giving him chances to attack by using her tricky magic.
It pushes him, but the team wins and they feel great about it. Coye is jealous of her magic, though, and he tells Shayla about wanting to become a Spellsword.
Shayla thought the magic thing was just an excuse he pulled out of his ass to lie to Byng, but its not. He says he’ll show her later, and they harvest the kill trophies. Coye also skins them to sell the hides and then lights the monsters on fire, and they and return.
He returns, turns the quest in to Tammy and has a nice dinner at the Guild, saving some for Shayla.
He retires to his dorm room, which again is empty besides him.
Shayla notices he’s in a really good mood as she eats the food he brought for her, and Coye is grateful for her.
He had sex thanks to her and he feels better and got some good work done today.
Shayla is embarrassed but is happy.
Coye remarks if only he could improve his magic now, then he’d be even happier.

He had, but they all told him he wasn’t cut out for it.
Shayla asks why it even matters, but his dad always told him that his mom was a great mage and he thought it’d be nice if he could be the best of both his parents.
Shayla apologizes, remembering his comments to Suzette about not having a mom. She assumes his mom dad, but there’s a deadpan reveal that she just didn’t want to settle down and marry Coye’s dad and she left after he was weaned.
Shayla laughs about the misunderstanding and Coye eventually asks if he could do anything special for her tonight as thanks for all her help.
Shayla is suspicious that he wants to get lewd, but he says he’s only kinda turned on compared to normal. She said that pixies have high libido and he realizes that he’s mostly been using her as a toy and hasn’t done much for her, so he wants to change that.

Coye asks if they need her to register their quest, but she says they’ll just go hunting monsters and collect the bounties on them. Then, she teases him for pinning her down like that. Coye gets defensive, but she promises that if he does his best today then he can smell her more.

The pair travel to the Gnarled woods and before they enter, Byng explains the plan. It’s breeding season for a monster weasel thing so there’s a bunch of them all over the place right now. They’re gonna compete, and whoever wins will get to make the loser do anything they want. The time limit is sundown.
Coye wants to know where they’ll keep the monster corpses, and Byng gives him a bag of holding to match her own. She tells him to keep it. He’s embarrassed since he knows these are expensive, but Byng doesn’t care and barely spends her gold anyway.
Coye asks why she’s so interested in him and always messing with him, but Byng reveals that she’ll let him know if he wins.
Coye feels like he’s at a disadvantage against Byng, who is a talented huntress. He lived off the land while training with his dad, but Byng survived in the Orc homerealm which is way more dangerous. Luckily he has Shayla to help out.
The two adventurers agree to meet back up at the forest entrance and they split up.

Pre-hunt

Shayla is happy to be out of the hat for a while, and her good mood translates to teasing Coye. He’s not in the mood, and feels a little guilty about his intentions.
He wants to know if chasing after sex like this makes him a bad person, since he doesn’t know if he likes Byng or not yet. Shayla tells him that sex doesn’t have to be connected to romance, but it can be if he wants it to. This confuses the boy further as he puts Shayla on the spot, asking if that means that the sex between them was just sex, then.
