Expressions

So expressions are not my forte; there's a ton of stuff that I want to work on and trying to come up with a guide revealed that to me.

What I caaan say is that it's helpful to understand each component of the face to know how far you can push them individually. I add a lot of diagonals in expressions to add asymmetry, and small lines surrounding major features. You can see these in creases above and below the eye, surrounding the eyebrows to indicate thinning, smile lines, the lower lip, and some to accentuate the nostrils. Being particular about the placement of lines is key to communicating the desired expression.

The second image is to show how each separate piece has a unique expression, but when they come together they make something new. It's like that food mixing part in ratatouille lol. Next to it I drew an expression as a whole that is loosely based on the composite. This is to show how small tweaks to positioning and line execution can create an entirely new expression.
