I got to play an acting game in high school where we would draw a name and get interviewed as the character, and I drew gollum. I had a blast. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun playing a character, he’s just so layered and enjoyable.

Just to bounce off the Andy Serkis comment, I love the fact that he filmed each of the smeagol/gollum split personality conversations in the same take, switching back and forth between the two in real time. Incredible performance.

I was born in 1995 and my Grandma bought me the video for Lotr in like prep I think, and I'd come home and rewatch it every day.
You can not imagine the chills as this movie then started playing as I was watching it in a cinema haha

to give a bit of context about Gandalf grey vs. white. To sum things up. Gandalf, Saruman and some other wizards were sent to the earth for different reasons. Gandalf, being the grey wizard, was responsible for interactions and alliances between the different races and beings of middle earth. Saruman, being the white wizard, was responsible for keeping the balance of the world. Because Saruman failed to do so, Gandalf was sent back as the white wizard to fulfill the task that Saruman did not fulfill. (This is the very short version, so pls dont break apart every word, But thats the gist of it)

Spartan : "he made this demon his bitch" WTF man give us a warning next time I was drinking and had to stop the vide clean it up from the table lol.
Couple things I want to mention:
- Andy Serkis as Gollum is phenomenal. The most believable CG character ever. Outstanding performance, hats of.
- The soundtrack is iconic. The Rohan theme is so beautiful and every time the brass comes in it reinforces the audience in their feeling that they are watching an epic story
- 100% Agree with Spartan the lore and the world is remarkable. Every land, every character could tell a thousand stories. It really makes you feel that this is a land with an ancient history and you just get to peek in on the events as these characters are coming to head with this evil, but it never feels like the world revolves around them. This will be just another story they will tell later.

The other two hobbits (besides Frodo & Sam) are Merry Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, who goes by Pippin (a short form of his first name), not by Took… So, it’s Merry and Pippin. Pip is definitely the bigger troublemaker of the two! 😉

Éowyn (the blond princess of Rohan) has a crush on Aragorn. Honestly, who can blame her… aren’t we all in love with Aragorn (Viggo)?! 💘

There are lots of interesting extra's on the Blurays/DVD's, one of the classics was this MTV spoof of "The Council Of Elrond" from the first movie (no spoilers), featuring Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy). Hilarious and well worth a quick watch.

I absolutely lost it at "Did you hear about the TOE?!?!"
I wanted to see what the editors would do with it. It's one of my favorite random LotR facts, but it's such a meme because EVERYONE brings it up.

The LOTR books literally defined modern fantasy. People have been making up magical shit forever but Tolkien was genuinely the blueprint for all modern fantasy, including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, all of which pay homage to LOTR. For example, Sam in GOT was inspired by Sam in LOTR.
But that's just one superficial example. It's so much deeper than that. Just the fact that GOT also had a fully realized imaginary world with different cultures, complete with a map. Or a whole has history going back hundreds or thousands of years.
People just didn't do shit like this before Tolkien, not this deep, not creating an entire world with detailed histories and deep cultures and dynasties that just exist and that the current story happens to occur within.
This idea that you are watching just one story as part of a fully realized imaginary world that exists on its own outside of your stories and characters? That's LOTR. That's Tolkien.

The Lord of the Rings lore is so much deeper than most people know. Gandalf is a Maiar, and angelic being with an incredible backstory. The Balrog is his equal, a Maiar that was corrupted. It is even cooler then the movie, which does it as much justice as visually possible and is one of my favorite movie moments.
Here is a nice explanation of their fight without spoilers.
