If I fail, I quit
Added 2023-02-16 16:02:43 +0000 UTCI have an idea for a new video where I challenge myself to have a finished working game in 30 days that I release on itch.io for the patrons. And if I fail to release a game, I quit game design entirely. Is this something that interests you as a video concept?
The next video I release will be about Fallout 3, then after that, I have nothing planned. I'm either going with this idea, or I am going to post up a poll.

A month is entirely doable for most genres, since ludum dare's 72 hrs are good enough for its participants. I don't like the "quit if I fail" part, but I read that's clickbait so it's cool!

2023-02-17 13:58:53 +0000 UTCI don't feel like that's a healthy challenge, either outcome seems rather poor, like, you push yourself too hard or you put out a shit product OR you quit a productive learning medium. Sounds like a lose - lose to me. Like I kind of understand the meaning and feeling behind this, but there's gotta be a better way/avenue.

2023-02-17 02:44:20 +0000 UTCI agree but won't the YouTube algorytm hate that change?

2023-02-16 20:49:47 +0000 UTCNice. Get some funny friends to trash the game for fun, maybe collab with a other youtuber. Making mod for fallout or eldre scroll could also be fun. Alterntivtly you could continue on your how to with how not to make a good video game. Dunno about that YouTube algorithm but I heard it hates changes.

2023-02-16 20:48:48 +0000 UTCThat's sort of the plan. Release no matter the state and hopefully relish in the hateful comments.

2023-02-16 19:18:20 +0000 UTCI'm starting small, and with the goal of adding more as time permits. The core gameplay should be implemented within a week. At least, that's the plan.

2023-02-16 19:16:54 +0000 UTCThat's kind of a radical idea, I hope you've got a scalable concept up your sleeve, especially if you're planning to go solo with it. Anyway, I'd be interested in something like a hands-on devlog/introspective/retrospective/postmortem about this. Also, I'd also suggest you to put a normal pricetag on it, maybe have a core version and something extra for your donors. And do plan ahead, me and my buddy just survived a weeklong game jam by barely finishing in time, killing only the game-breaking bugs and ignoring "marginal" things like... uhh... balance? Like seriously, shotty wasn't implemented a mere hour before the deadline. AND we scaled back from a full game to a single level... I even had to pull an all-nighter. So multiply that crunch by e.g. x3.5, and that's your time budget, but also divide it by 2, because you're supposedly alone for it.

2023-02-16 19:11:58 +0000 UTCI would be interested but I only answered no because I don't want you to kill the idea all together. Just make the punishment something more light like charity donation or some like a dedicated Q+A or something. Maybe even let us patrons choose a topic for a one off stream or two. You know something lighter. Of course these are just ideas, you do you and all that.

2023-02-16 17:58:09 +0000 UTCGoing back to the roots, eh? :) Would love to see how you approach the conceptualisation and development process with your current experience. I'm in for it! No need to quit in case of failure though.

2023-02-16 17:41:13 +0000 UTCI definitely would love to see what you could make in 30 days (and I enjoy seeing your game design process), but I'm abstaining from voting, because if you're confident it's something you can definitely do and it will get you views on the video, I say go for it; if, however, you have concerns of any sort that you might fail the challenge and nix engaging in an activity you genuinely seem to find fulfilling, it's a definite "No". I think it's a video that people would be very interested in and gain you some new viewership, I just wouldn't want a passion of yours to potentially be the price for that.

2023-02-16 17:20:10 +0000 UTCI'd love to see a game you made but i don't think you should give up on game design whatever the results

2023-02-16 17:12:47 +0000 UTCThat is an unrealistic concept. I assume you are interested in game design. I don't see why you would "quit it entirely" if you didn't meet a deadline.

2023-02-16 16:54:52 +0000 UTCI agree. I'd love to see some vids/streams of your game design process, and actual game development - see what you can make in 30 days!

2023-02-16 16:27:27 +0000 UTCI would prefer if you have to release after 30days regardless og how shitty it is or something like that. But if you want the click bait narrative that's fine, but quiting seems a bit harsh. Maybe forcing you to pitch it for some studio regardless of the quality or some other punishment could be as entertaining.

2023-02-16 16:18:26 +0000 UTCClick bait is a reality though. I've made a video game in 16 hours, so a month is no big deal if I keep my design small.

2023-02-16 16:12:36 +0000 UTCI like the idea minus you giving up on game design
Keith Doran
2023-02-16 16:08:08 +0000 UTCIf you think it will be a fun challenge for you then sure. Giving up on game design seams a little harsh if it's something you still enjoy doing. Maybe it could be different game types if the first video performs well enough even if the game doesn't come out the way you want it too. Keep designing games until one stick.
