The Governor vowed he would never lose his new family. And then he asked Martinez if he could keep the camp safe, but Martinez was unsure. Then Martinez proposed the Governor help him lead. The Governor killed him because he realised that Martinez did not have what it took to keep the camp and - by extension - his new family safe.
