I’ve been wowed like you at Agust D mixtape and amazed that D2 hit it out of the park in the same way, but maybe even more artistic and concise… and I’ve been listening to D-Day in multi playlists since it dropped and I LOVE it, I’m so proud of my bias for overcoming a lot of difficulties to create this art. He’s inspired me to write music, make films, really push myself out of my comfort zone and I even met a dude a few weeks ago who shared enough characteristics with SUGA that I came out of dating retirement after 3 years and have fallen in love, honestly because of who I am now I’m changed by this man’s artistry. So, thank you for listening with your usual keen ears, thanks for taking the time to read the lyrics and let them soak in, thanks for noting one of my all time fav tracks What do you Think, it’s soooo good. Also, you boys sure like to role play 😂 and I mean that as the most innocent double entendre possible. 😅😜 I think D2 is one of my favourite albums. Period. That said, could I just suggest and request that you deep dive a little into Epik High and their relationship to BTS (Suga & RM)? Epik High is a 3 member group who have been in the music scene for 20+ years and consist of 3 male members. (Tablo, Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz) Tablo's lyricism, melodies and genius, Mithra Jin's lyrics and flows and DJ Tukutz' beats and production will be extremely enjoyable to hip hop heads like yourself. And, they are living Korean (hip hop) music history. That said, why do I believe you as hip hop lovers specifically would enjoy exploring the connections and chronology between Epik High and BTS? There are multiple parts to my answer. RM and Suga were the key capstones of starting out BTS' music journey and lyricism. In saying that, I'm not disregarding Hobi as a lyricist or producer here, but speaking chronological facts when looking at the history of how BTS started out. RM & Suga both said multiple times that Epik High has inspired them in their own journey, that they are fans, and for one of them, that their song 'Fly' (Epik High's first mainstream commercial success in South Korea) started their love of hip hop and rap alltogether. Though I can't remember whether it was Suga or RM saying it. I'm leaning towards Suga here. Another part to my answer is that you brought up this wonderful point of intertextuality. Intertextuality creates a framework in which BTS lyrics can be understood at a deeper level, past surface level meaning of the words, on the level of the artist's own personal development. I believe there is another layer to unpack through discovering the intertextuality of Epik High's lyrics and their influence on RM and particularly Suga, as writers. Epik High in their own discography has explored Carl Jungs concepts. They take on psychology, social commentary and individual expression across their albums. Particularly the albums Map of the Human Soul, Remapping the Human Soul and Map the Soul are clear references to Jungian concepts. Though Epik High's approach is very different and perhaps not as formally structured as the concepts for the musical and visual content of BTS albums (like Map of the Soul Persona & 7) in which BTS start experiencing and intentionally discussing Carl Jungs concepts; there are intertextual references in both RMs and Suga's lyrics (and Suga's sounds!) which were inspired (not copied lol) from Epik High's music. I feel that in order to understand them as musicians and writers/thinkers, it is beneficial for Army to explore more about the relationship between Epik High and BTS from an artistic, intertextual standpoint... Also, Tablo (Epik High's 'main' lyricist) has such an interesting and crazy life story (there are whole podcasts on it) and he recently shot a Suchwita episode as Suga's guest 😍 Seriously, as an older international 'k'pop fan who got disillusioned about the industry in the early 2010s, Epik High is the sole reason why I gave BTS the time of day to explore their lyrics and meanings and messages after having stopped engaging Korean entertainment industry alltogether at the time. As a person in my early thirties, I see BTS as my current musical life companion and close friend who I can brace the world with hand in hand, while Epik High will always remain as my first love who I watch grow and live life from afar, with a loving gaze. 🙌 Happy to help find a starting point for you to explore Epik High's music, if you ever choose to do so. Unfortunately there hasn't ever been an army content creator yet who thoroughly explored this connection between Epik High and BTS, so it's not like I can guide you to a 20mins summary video lol. I think it's fascinating because so much of BTS's music talks about things like youth, having dreams, and capitalism (among other themes) and we see it all synthesized here in such a succinct line. Packs a punch to say the least😂😭 I think you guys touched on a lot of it. I think it's also interesting to think about it as a scene. Morphine is a painkiller, but it's also usually only given to terminally ill patients. It's commonly thought (though not scientifically supported) that morphine can accelerate one's death. So, people who are in pain and suffering (poverty, illness for example) are offered some kind of "morphine" to alleviate the pain. What is that morphine? Hope. Hope masks the pain, which is good, but they have to give something over to the one injecting/loaning it (the one being capitalism). All they have is a dream, so that's what they hand over. And that's the exchange. Capitalism gives us hope to momentarily soothe our suffering, at the price of giving up our dreams. But eventually, if it's really like morphine, we might also say that even hope can more speedily bring us to our own demise...

It’s about the line “10 zeros in my bank account with my youth used as collateral” I work as a mortgage brokers assistant in 🇦🇺. The way I interpreted this is that collateral - Suga’s youth - is mortgaged. So it’s not about when or if the debt is repaid. When you take out a loan with your house as security, from Day 1 until the loan is discharged, the Lender as mortgagor can & does place restrictions. So Suga’s youth was spent with constant restrictions & restraints. Do you remember the 1st Rise of Bangtan episode there was a lady explaining how in Korea idols are supposed to be spotless? Our Western definition of spotless doesn’t come anywhere close to Korea’s. Idols could have a scandal for something we would never even blink an eye at. I will head back into the reaction now, which I’m enjoying thank you!

My favorite songs on D2 are Moonlight, People, and 28. :) I was wondering if you were going to skip forward in your BTS journey to listen to Suga's solo songs on BTS albums. There are quite a few memorable ones that I'm sure he might perform in his concert. Such as the intros to HYYH: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life and Nevermind. There are also his solo songs such as First Love, Seesaw, and Interlude: Shadow. I'm personally looking forward to Nevermind, First Love, and Seesaw. I have a feeling you'll really like Intro: The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, but I won't give any spoilers. Yoongi's incapable of making bad songs, I'm sure you'll like all of them. 💜💜

I had the exact same reaction when I first heard it. I have a feeling we’ll all need to restrain each other if it’s performed live 😂😂. “WDYT” was my favourite song until I listened to “strange”. I remember the first time I listened to strange with the lyrics, I was floored. The way Yoongi and Namjoon are able to describe the capitalistic world we live in, while also being aware of their positioning and the implications of that, never ceases to amaze me. My favourite thing is the way they’re both criticizing the system from a different point of view. When I think of Yoongis verse, I think he’s explaining the idea that capitalism is a machine that only benefits the rich and wealthy. Average or less fortunate people, are forced to live off of HOPING that they’ll be able to make it through by working themselves to the bone. The less fortunate are forced to survive off of the idea and hope that their dreams will come true, while the rich are constantly using their greed to make themselves richer. When Yoongi speaks of polarization, it’s highlighting the polar opposites between the rich and wealthy, and the “other” side of society. In his pre-chorus verse, I interpreted it as the idea that the capitalistic world is sick, and a person who had their eyes open to how the system is built to their disadvantage is treated like a mutant 🤯🤯Yoongi is basically saying “isn’t it weird that the person who sees this system for what it is, is being seen as nonconforming? When it’s in fact the system, that has its eyes closed to what’s really going on in every day people’s lives.” He’s basically reiterating that capitalism is blind to how everyday people are actually surviving within the sick system, because the system is blinded by hypocrisy and greed. Now when Namjoon takes over, he immediately goes into how everything is controlled by Capitalism. He explains that we’re all basically slaves to the system, that none of the choices you make are your own, not even what you post on social media. And so, his answer to Yoongi in the pre-chorus is basically saying “I actually don’t think it’s weird that the person who sees this system for what it is, is treated as a mutant” Namjoon explains that in a sick capitalistic world it’s much weirder that there aren’t MORE people who see that this is all a controlled system. To Namjoon people are so used to being part of this system that they don’t even realize they’re in it anymore. In turn, the people are the ones being blinded by the capitalistic society, as there aren’t MORE people with their eyes open to what’s going on. It’s weird that there aren’t more people seeing this polarization of society. Yoongi is saying capitalism is blind to what’s it’s doing to people, and in turn, Namjoon is saying the people themselves are being blinded by what capitalism is doing to them 🤯🤯 I didn’t mean for my comment to be this long, but this is one of my favourite songs. I love when they get into depicting society, because they always do it in a way that really makes you think. D-2 is truly a masterpiece, I love everything about this album, and I cannot wait for your reaction to D-Day, somehow I think you’ll lose it even more 😂😂 Also, that intertextuality article somehow managed to perfectly explain what I was never able to put into words myself. Something that really gets me in BTS’ music, is the way they pull lines from previous songs to remind the audience of lessons they’ve given us in the past. It’s one of my favourite thing about their music. Thanks for all you do 💜💜

I'd happily sit through 3+ hours of album reactions and more with you. ARMY would do it even if we've heard these songs so many times. Once the lyrics hit in certain BTS songs, it feels like a revelation each time, and mygodddd do these men have amazing, introspective minds and the talent to turn them into art. And this is to say... D-Day is stunning. I didn't think anything other than Mono. would make me bawl my eyes out but Agust D just had to say, hold my beer (whiskey). And Road to D-Day was just as fun and I feel like you guys would rly enjoy the journey. Can't wait to re-listen and re-watch with you both! 💜

The beat and the mix along with the singing make it feel sort of comfortable and mirror the stage of mind suga is in. It's very powerful and quite experimental. I remember he said that he got some feedback from a peer saying the song made them feel uncomfortable, and he was happy about it 😅 btw, D-DAY absolutely slaps and it's definitely my favourite agust d project. Every agency in korea tried to get the ruled changed by using BTS as the main example. but the government changed the law to only allow people who achieved the order of merit by the government. and ONLY BTS got that. so the agencies was so angry and said it was unfair because their idols never got that. so that was what Sugas was talking about. i love how we always get the real story from the members. the agencies tried to use BTS since 2020 until now and they where told not to say anything about going to the military. they all tried to make them change the rule up until it was to late, and BTS had to go. they told us at the festa dinner that they could not tell us everything. and Jin and the members used to call the military for Voldemort. the villain from happy potter who can not be named. they always said they would go and people accused them for trying to get out of it because the other agencies used their name. but Big Hit was never part of it. it was all the other labels who did. so much shit goes on behind closed doors.

I just wanted to say thank you for this reaction in particular. I personally never listened in depth to D-2 and gravitated towards mono and hope world since they’re very easy to listen to. However in prep for D-Day, I’ve also been diving into Suga’s music more and have a renewed love for D-2 so seeing you experience is amazing. Admittedly, I’m only 1 hour in but had a few things to say so far. Jordan was right about Interlude: Set Me Free being heard before. They played it in the background of the Suchwita episode with Jimin. Also - seeing Jordan’s face in particular during Suga’s verse of Strange felt like seeing bias-wrecking happening in real time. Love the authenticity you guys bring. Lastly - I wanted to say that you guys loving What do you think? so much feels like an easy way for you to learn very useful Korean phrases on your language journey. 어떻게 and 생각해 are both very useful phrases. 어떻게 is so commonly used that once you learn this, you will hear it all the time since it essentially means “how” but also can be like “oh my god! what do i do!” type of feeling. Also 생각해 is equivalent to “I think” in English but is the informal form which I’m sure you’ll learn about along the way. Since you like this song so much and the phrase is repeated so often, it could be a natural way for you to learn these very useful phrases. Anyway, I’m going to enjoy the rest of your reaction with a brief interlude for listening to Haegeum and the D-day album. Happy 420 if you celebrate and thank you so much for your reactions. I also want to say that while I appreciate regular reactions, I want to make sure you guys are prioritizing your own mental health and work/life balance. The BTS content is still going to be there for you to react to and digest. We all need our breaks but I also respect and understand the grind. When he found out why he tweeted BTS thanking them. After that Suga would occasionally add a Max song to his playlist. Because of this Max gained a following in Korea and eventually toured there. When he did he reached out to Suga and asked if he wanted to meet up. They went to dinner. When Suga was in LA they saw a basketball game together. Eventually they decided to work together. Max even learned the Korean part Suga rapped for his song Blueberry Eyes. They stayed connected and Max even ended up writing Yet To Come for their Proof album. Funny note: Eric Nam, a singer I mentioned before, was a common friend between them. On his podcast interviewing Max he joked how he watched Suga and Max interacting and felt like he was watching them court each other. 😂

I'm only like 30 minutes in, so if you listened to it at the end, then I haven't got there yet but the 45 second-long intro on What Do You Think? is so good, despite it being instrumental (unless you listen to the original which holds an old speech that was removed from the song due to some issues back when the album released) 😩

2023-04-20 23:06:18 +0000 UTCi always prefer shorter albums tbh. anything over 10 gets overwhelming and i feel like i can’t properly process and appreciate all the songs. especially when it's in another language. “if you’re going to crash accelerate harder, idiot” means so much to me. when i first discovered bts 7 years ago, yoongi’s song nevermind is the first song i remember hitting me HARD. and that line in particular. it just made me break down sobbing. i needed to hear that back then. on 2020 when he said it in moonlight i broke down again. i needed to be reminded. bts lyrics always have a way of coming to you when you need them. what he means about being a boy not an adult, at least to me, is that keeping your dreams and actively still trying for them is something only someone still childlike would do. adults often tell you to let them go and move on. they’ll even call you “childish” for it. yoongi is saying he’s still a boy bc he’s still trying for his dreams. the line “Thinking that my success has anything to do with your failure” is, i believe, in reference to antis, often stans of other k-pop groups, blaming bts and army for their groups not doing well. they’ll often say stuff like “well if bts hadn’t gotten first my group would’ve” “if army didn’t monster stream we would’ve broke the record.” it’s pretty ridiculous honestly. other people doing well shouldn’t dictate how well you do. if that was the case, bts wouldn’t be here rn. there was plenty of people way above them in the industry that could’ve stopped them by that logic. after the enlistment was announced, they started celebrating thinking they had a chance now to rank but instead of 1 person blocking them it’s 7. not that it matters at all lmao but 10 zeros would be at least 10 billion won which is $7,553,155.30 usd watching the dots connect in yalls heads when you get a lyrics is so funny i’m so sorry. y’all get so hyped up about it i’m crying 😭 ANTICAPITALIST MIN YOONGI VIVA LA REVOLUCIÓN 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 burn it is one of my all time favorite agust d songs. i’ll be shocked if anything ever tops it for me.
